P5/6 and Feis Rois put on a fantastic musical performance for the school!

Today, the P5/6 pupils showed they were extremely confident individuals by taking part in a musical performance in front of the audience of P1-4.  They all collaborated together in a group piece then showed fantastic confidence    performing a solo piece of music too.  The P1-4 class gave a standing ovation for this as it was that good!  Well done p5/6 – you should be very proud of your musical talents 🙂

A sad end to a fantastic RME topic on Diwali

P1-4 pupils are very sad that today was the last day of learning about the Hindu Festival of Diwali!  They have taken part in lots of fun activities to help them learn about how the festival of lights is celebrated around the world.

Today, they will bring home rangoli patterns made from sand, diva candles made from clay and some fantastic firework display pictures which symbolise all the celebrations which take place during the festival.

Meal at Mount Stewart

Portpatrick Primary school pupils were recently treated to a lovely Christmas meal, at The Mount Stewart in Portpatrick.  The hotel very kindly provided a turkey dinner for every pupil and finger buffet for their parents, free of charge.  Almost every family at school took advantage of the hospitality offered at The Mount Stewart.  The children all enjoyed a lovely meal while the adults all had the chance to relax and chat.  At the end of the evening the Mount Stewart also provided a very generous goodie bag for each child to take home with them.  They all left the hotel full of the Christmas spirit, and appreciative of the generosity shown towards them all.

Many thanks must go to the Mount Stewart for their sup

port of the school.

P1-4 Health and wellbeing First aid topic – Choking

Today the boys and girls learned what to do in the event of someone choking and there is no adult to help.  They learned to try 4 things;

  1. Ask them to cough it up – if this doesn’t work…
  2. Slap it out (5 times)- if this doesn’t work…
  3. Squeeze it out (5 times) – if this doesn’t work…
  4. Call 999 and continue to do 5 slaps then 5 squeezes until help arrives or the choking stops

P1-4 Health and Wellbeing – basic first aid

P1-4 had great fun on Friday taking on the roles of patients and nurses to learn about how to deal with minor bleeding.  We used red paint for fake blood and followed the steps to stop a minor bleed.

The children first of all applied pressure to the wound with a clean cloth, asked the patient to raise the cut above the heart to slow the blood flow, clean, dry then cover the wound with a bandage or plaster. Take a look at some of our poor patients!

Read, Write, Count Fun in P1-4

Today, parents/carers were invited in to P1-4 to see the exciting new bookbags being gifted to all P1-3 pupils from the Scottish Book Trust.

There are books, activity books and numeracy activities for the children to play with adults at home to enhance their reading, writing and counting.

The children were very excited to play the games with adults and hopefully will continue to use the bags at home.

Bag pack fundraising

On Saturday some pupils, parents, grandparents,  staff and friends of Portpatrick Primary gave up their time to help pack shopping bags in their local Morrisons supermarket.  After a few hours work, all of the pennies were counted and the grand total of £640 was raised!  Great work all!

The photograph shows just some of the pupils who gave up their time to help out at the weekend.  Thank you to all who supported this event.img_2803

P1-4 HWB Police visit about emergencies

Today, PC Siobhan Pellet visited P1-4 as part of their HWB topic on Emergencies and Basic First Aid.  She talked about the role of the police and other emergency services.  The children learned about what an emergency is and how to call 999 and also learned to call 101 for the Police when it is not an emergency.

The children practised making 999 calls.  They need to know their name, address, mum and dads full names and their telephone number.  We will be practising all of this with the children.
