We have Suicide Alertness For Everyone Training (safeTALK) scheduled for:

Monday 30 April 2018 (1pm – 5pm) in Arbroath
Friday 22 June 2018 (1pm – 5pm) in Forfar

This training is open to everyone (employees, employers and members of the public who live or work in Angus).  Please forward this email to anyone who would be interested in this training.

SafeTALK is designed to be an introductory course for anyone interested in learning to be suicide aware.

Can you recognise the signs of someone at risk of suicide?  Would you know what to say to a colleague, student, family member or contact with thoughts of suicide?  Most persons with thoughts of suicide go unrecognised – even though most are, directly or indirectly, requesting help.  Without safeTALK training, these invitations to help are too rarely accepted, or even noticed.  In only a few hours, you will learn how to recognise these invitations and provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide.  Expect to leave safeTALK more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.  safeTALK is a training session for everyone in the community – no prior knowledge is required.

Aim of Training:  To enable participants to recognise and engage people who might be having thoughts of suicide and to connect them with community resources trained in suicide intervention.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Be aware that people at risk of suicide are often not given help due to cultural myths and misinformation
  • Recognise when a person might be having thoughts of suicide
  • Engage that person in direct and open talk about suicide
  • Move quickly to connect them with someone trained in suicide intervention who can review the risk and develop a plan to reduce the risk of harm or death.

Please see attachment for further information about safeTALK.

Outline of safeTALK training

To book, please email suicideprevention@angus.gov.uk with one of the attached registration forms.  Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.  This session is free of charge to participants and will be funded by the Suicide Prevention Collaborative for Angus.

Practitioner Enquiry
CLPL Opportunity from Angus Educational Psychology Service

Mental Health and Wellbeing: Early Intervention and Prevention

“Practitioner enquiry helps to create a space to stop and look again at existing ways of working……teachers who engage in research have ‘better understanding of their practice and ways to improve it’. For some teachers, enquiry may promote levels of critical reflection that are ‘transformative’.” http://www.gtcs.org.uk/professional-update/research-practitioner-enquiry/practitioner-enquiry/what-is-practitioner-enquiry.aspx

What?  The Scottish Government’s Mental Health Strategy sets out the intention for prevention and early intervention to improve the mental health and wellbeing of Scotland’s children and young people.

Angus Educational Psychology Service (EPS) is offering a course about Practitioner Enquiry and Mental Health and Wellbeing.  Practitioner Enquiry is a ‘finding out’ or an investigation undertaken within the practitioner’s own classroom or school and in collaboration with others.  We will work together to clarify your ideas and questions about pupil mental health and wellbeing in your own context and discuss approaches to gathering information and evidence to support your enquiry.  A framework for understanding wellbeing will be introduced which will help structure and drive our enquiries.

Why?  Practitioner Enquiry is one of the key elements in the GTCS Career Long Professional Learning Standards and is envisaged to become an integral aspect of the day to day practice of teachers and education professionals.  Participating in Practitioner Enquiry enables you to bring about fundamental changes in pedagogy and curriculum and improve the quality of pupils’ learning experiences.

When?  This is a 4 session course.  Sessions 1 and 2 introduce Practitioner Enquiry and the psychology of Mental Health and Wellbeing.  You will undertake your enquiry between February and June.  Our 3rd session will be for peer support and coaching and our 4th session will be to share our learning.

Who? This is for anyone who has an interest in mental health and wellbeing and a desire to work with others to undertake an enquiry project. It may be particularly relevant for Pupil Care and Support Teachers, LAC Designated Managers, ASN teachers, Class and Subject Teachers and School Management.

For further information or to sign up, contact Melanie Rice at ricem@angus.gov.uk

For further information about Practitioner Enquiry, visit the GTCS website (http://www.gtcs.org.uk/professional-update/practitioner-enquiry.aspx)

Another date for the Strengthening Families Programme facilitators training has been agreed and will run:

11th May,18th May and 25th May 2017.
Training will start 9am till 4pm
Grenfell House
290 High Street
Arbroath, DD11 1FJ .

This training would qualify workers to deliver the Strengthening Families Programme (SFP) in areas across Angus. We would ask that the people attending the training to commit to running 3 programmes per year. There is no cost for the training other than the commitment to deliver the 3 programmes per year.

SFP is an evidence based programme developed to help families avoid developing serious behavioural problems by intervening early. The programme runs over 7 weeks. Parents and young people attend separate skill building sessions for the first hour and then break for 30 minutes and then another hour together in a supervised family session.

The parent and youth sessions provide reinforcement and skills practice. For example, while the parents are learning how to use consequences, the young people are learning about the importance of following rules. Then in the family session the young people and parents practice problem solving together as a family when the rules are broken.

The main 3 aims of the programme are to:

  • Build life skills in young people and parents.
  • Reduce alcohol misuse and other behavioural problems during adolescents
  • Strengthening parent/child relationships.

If you would be interested in attending the training or have any other questions please contact me directly. Please forward to any colleagues that would be interested in attending the training too.

Please be advised of the following three Professional Development opportunities which are being offered to our Local Authority partnership through Dundee University and funded by Scottish Government.  The deadline for submission has now been extended to Friday 16th February.

Project 1: Early Phase and Attainment: STEM in the Primary Classroom – This module will consist of a week-long science school (Summer 2017). The science school will incorporate hands-on activities exploring the more challenging aspects of the CFE Science Experiences and Outcomes. Opportunities will be available to try out a range of different science resources and engage in professional dialogue with like-minded colleagues to critically evaluate different approaches to teaching primary science. This project will enable 10 Early phase teachers to gain 30 M Level credits.

Project 2: Attainment/Literacy and Numeracy – Developing Transition Teachers – Within the partnership a variety of methods of supporting transition is being used: in some instances primary staff teaching in secondary schools, sometimes for short or longer periods of time. In other instances, secondary specialist teachers go into primary schools to work with pupils. This Level 11 module focuses on transition pedagogy, particularly in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The module will consist of three twilight sessions beginning in February 2017. This project will enable 10 teachers to gain 30 M Level credits.

Project 3: Leadership: Middle Leadership – Leadership, Change and Organisational Development  – The partnership recognises the importance developing future leaders as a priority. To enable this, the partnership supports the delivery of a Post Graduate Certificate in Middle Leadership. It is envisaged that this leadership certificate could be recognised as the first of the three part SCEL Headship qualification. This certificate is also open to education staff beyond teachers.  This project will enable 8 education staff to gain 60 M Level credits.

Should you be interested in pursuing any of these Professional Development opportunities, please submit one side of A4 in support of your application, citing your reason as to why you ought to be considered to Angela Duce at DuceAI@angus.gov.uk  by Thursday 16th  February. We would like to invite you to our next Restorative Approaches Network Meeting.  The theme for this one is ‘Making Connections’.   Following high levels of interest in Peer Mediation at our last meeting, we will learn about the development and impact of Peer Mediation in Hayshead P.S. We will also explore the links between Restorative and Growth Mindset, Health and Wellbeing, and Raising Attainment and finally, look at a proposal about how to develop Restorative Approaches in Angus.

Staff who attended previous network meetings have found them “rejuvenating” and have left with “lots of ideas”.  Evaluations have consistently been very positive and those who attended have consistently asked for further meetings.  I hope you can join us for this meeting.

Families Outside is facilitating a workshop session in HMP Perth to give teachers and school staff an insight into the issues facing children affected by imprisonment and help them explore how they might support these children and their families.

The 2016 session is to be held on the 15th September 2016 4.15 pm until 6.15pm at HMP Perth 3 Edinburgh Road, Perth. There are a total of 10 places available for Angus staff.

This event has been well received in the past and is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in the issues affecting children and families.

Content:

Children with a parent in prison face significant challenges including trauma (making it hard for them to learn) and stigma (which can lead to behaviour problems and bullying). They are more likely to come from families with complex needs and are less likely to meet child well-being indicators. This CPD course offers:

  • an opportunity to visit a prison and to enter into the stories of children affected;an insight into the issues facing children and families who have a close relative in prison; and
  • practical ways in which teachers and school communities can help families affected.

Aims and outcomes:

Aim:  To explore the impact that imprisonment of a close relative can have on children and to learn how school communities can provide key support for them and their carers.

Outcomes:       Participants will:

  • be more confident in how to engage, and support, children and families affected by imprisonment;
  • understand the complex situations that families affected often experience;
  • have a knowledge of resources and support available for schools and for families; and
  • understand the importance of links between prison, support agencies and schools.

Further information:

As the session takes place inside a prison, course participants must arrive by the specified time. Participants should have photographic ID (e.g. driver’s licence) and are asked not to bring mobile phones or any other electronic equipment into the prison, additionally please do not carry change in your pockets as this will delay the process of getting through security. It will not be possible to leave the prison before the end of the session.

As there are only 10 places available, these will allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis; and there should be only one representative from each school attending.

If you would like to attend this invaluable professional learning opportunity, please contact Alita Spink, SLSO spinka1@angus.gov.uk to register.

We would now like to invite applications from suitably experienced teaching staff to join this programme which will be delivered through a partnership with the University of Dundee. This year, 150 fully funded places will be made available nationally for this programme.

It aims to enable candidates to:

  • develop and deepen the ability to critically reflect and enquire to enhance their strategic leadership practice
  • develop their strategic leadership and management skills in practice as specified by the Standard for Headship in Scotland
  • build and apply sound knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership and management practice and theory in the context of the role of Head Teacher
  • design and initiate a strategic change initiative which will strengthen the school’s capability for improvement to,
  • meet the Standard for Headship

The Into Headship Qualification consists of two courses or modules and the programme structure relates to the phases of strategic change. The emphasis is on addressing a whole school strategic issue. Participants will be expected to build a vision for longer term change to address this issue. Working with stakeholders, participants will then develop and initiate a strategic plan for long term change and undertake an interim evaluation. This evaluation will highlight progress and identify next steps towards sustainable school improvement.

To qualify to apply, you must be able to evidence the following minimum criteria:
