Are you a Middle Leader in a Primary or Secondary School?

SCEL are running one-day events for current middle leaders which may be of interest to you.  The details, including how to apply, are below.

Scottish College for Educational Leadership
Effective Middle Leadership Days 2019

These events are open to all current middle leaders from across Scotland. The aim of the days is to explore some of the current research and literature around middle leadership and to facilitate the participants in identifying the skills that they need to develop to lead effectively in their own contexts. The events also offer a valuable opportunity for participants to meet colleagues from outside their own schools and to create new professional networks.

The outcomes of the day are that participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • Consider the impact of their own professional learning over the past year.
  • Engage and explore the research around middle leadership with reference to their context.
  • Engage in a Learning Set approach and explore current successes or challenges.
  • Create and further develop supportive professional relationships

There is a pre-engagement task where we ask participants to sign up for the SCEL Framework. A detailed programme of the events will be issued once participants have signed up.

Early booking is advisable due to the high demand last year.

The dates are as follows for you to sign up:

Date and time    Tuesday 13 November 2018, 6pm

Event/activity/ description
The teenage author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, was an avid reader, as her detailed diaries reveal. But her most iconic creations, Victor Frankenstein and his Monster, are fatally corrupted by their own exposure to books. Frankenstein immerses himself in the occult sciences, while the Monster turns evil after learning about humanity’s misdeeds in Paradise Lost, The Sorrows of Young Werther, and the Bible, among other things.

This talk, by Dr Daniel Cook from the University of Dundee, traces Shelley’s reading habits before and during the composition of her Gothic masterpiece, and considers the devilish role played by books in her most famous work of fiction.

I would like to alert you to a major international conference on Primary Science Education which will be taking place from 6 – 8 June 2019 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The conference will be run by the Primary Science Teaching Trust and promises to be an inspiring opportunity for practitioners to share outstanding practice, to hear from some very high quality speakers and to visit an exhibition of innovative classroom materials.

I have been asked by the organisers to ask ADES members to encourage schools to offer workshop sessions at the conference highlighting the best practice in science education in Scottish primary schools. Initial expressions of interest (name of school(s) and title or brief outline of content of workshop) are requested by Friday 14 September (apologies for short notice) and should be sent too Ali.Eley@pstt.org.uk .

The call for proposals and associated guidance can all be found here:https://www.primaryscienceconference.org/call-for-proposals

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact Ali at the email address above, or her colleague Amy Thorman on amy.thorman@pstt.org.uk .

This is an excellent opportunity to showcase some excellent practice from across Scotland. For information, the PSTT’s inaugural International Primary Science Conference was held in Belfast 2016, was attended by over 350 practitioners from across the UK and beyond and received outstanding evaluations from delegates.

SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER EVENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE

Cafe Science Dundee: The Future of Crime Scene Investigations
with Roy Mudie, University of Dundee

Venue/Address    Avery & Co, 34 South Tay St, DD1 1PD
Date and time       Monday 17 September 2018, 7pm

Event/activity/ description
Real-life crime scenes are so very different from how you see them on TV. We are all familiar with the typical crime scene in TV and films, featuring white-suited experts working indoors, in a large, tidy space that happens to have a dead body in it. Real crime scenes can be cluttered, cramped, noisy and chaotic, and forensic experts need all the help they can get when recording all of the data at the scene.

New technology may be able to help build a better picture of crime scenes. Using mobile devices to show investigators where different evidence was found, whilst still on the scene, could help locate additional evidence and build a case. But this new technology might prove to be more of a distraction and hasn’t yet been tested in real-life, so we’re testing out how this works in the forensic labs of Dundee.

Join us for this talk from Roy Mudie, from the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, at the University of Dundee, as he talks about his research in to new technologies, like augmented reality, and the future of crime scene investigations.

This is a free event and everyone is welcome. There is no need to book in advance but please do arrive early.

Dundee Arts Café: Penguins – Public Art on Parade with Janice Aitken

Venue/Address    The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum, Albert Square, Dundee DD1 1DA
Date and time       Tuesday 2 October 2018, 6pm

Event/activity/ description
This summer has seen the streets of Dundee populated by a waddle of colourful penguin sculptures commissioned by Maggie’s Dundee, a charity that supports people and families affected by cancer. The penguin sculpture was designed by Janice Aitken and each one has been decorated with individual designs by a wonderful range of artists and designers. The finale of this fantastic venture is the auction in September, making the penguin parade both an excellent fundraising initiative and a fantastic awareness raising project for the charity.

The trail has been enjoyed by adults and children of all ages, ‘collecting’ penguins through taking photographs and updating specially designed sticker albums, and getting out and about on foot, by bus and on their bikes.

Join Janice Aitken from the University of Dundee as she discusses the Maggie’s Penguin Parade and some of the other public art pieces that she has created, including the boards recently on display at Slessor Square and the decorative windows for the Medical Library at Ninewells.

Everyone is welcome. This event is free and non-bookable. Places are limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Doors open at 5pm.

There will be a collection in aid of Maggie’s at the end of the event.

Café Science Dundee: Making Light Work

Date and time           Monday 14 May 2018, 7pm

Event/activity/ description
The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and most powerful particle collider, and the largest single machine in the world. Working with the Large Hardon Collider, research happening right here in Dundee is helping to unlock some of science’s greatest mysteries including the “Big Bang”.

For centuries light and its properties have fascinated scientists and philosophers, particularly with the discovery that light is both a particle and a wave. Our understanding of the way light interacts with matter has allowed us to create new ways of using light, ranging from spectacles to fibre-optic cables to lasers.

Join us for this talk from Prof Amin Abdolvand (University of Dundee), an expert on the use and making of lasers. He will discuss the interaction of laser beams with materials, the fascination of changing materials using laser beams and why this topic continues to catch the fantasy of scientists and engineers.

I am writing to let you know about another CPD opportunity for teachers in Angus, Dundee and Perth being offered by Families Outside (the organisation which supports the children of families impacted by imprisonment). Families Outside is to facilitate another workshop session in HMP Perth to give colleagues an insight into the issues facing children affected by imprisonment and how they might support them and their families. These sessions have been very popular and well-attended in previous years, and I have attached the contents aims and outcomes regarding this CPD session.

The 2018 session is to be held on the 21 March 2018 at HMP Perth 3 Edinburgh Road, Perth 16.25-18.30.

There is a total of 30 places available which allows for 10 from each local authority. Depending on numbers, we may have to limit places to one representative per school. Please circulate this information to anyone that may be interested. I will require an emailed list of all participants who wish to attend by 9/03/17 – this is to pass over to the prison.

This event has been well received in the past and is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in the issues affecting children and families.

Please be in touch if you would like to attend this session.

I look forward to hearing from you.  ( Spinka1@angus.gov.uk )

Pedagoo (www.pedagoo.org) is a growing community of teachers collaboratively supporting, encouraging and sharing innovative and effective approaches to education. It aims to improve educational outcomes for our young people through positively and professionally sharing practice.

Pedagoo events are fun, focus on community building as a key outcome and take a constructivist approach to professional learning – in other words, rich dialogue between “presenters” and “participants” is a key priority in the planning of our events.  Pedagoo events take a ‘Learning Conversation’ approach, normally in the region of 40 minutes in length with a number of conversations across the day.

There are four Pedagoo events planned in the near future:

Nursing is a constantly changing profession, with new skills, roles and challenges affecting how nurses care for us. Tom McConnachie is born and bred in Dundee, and has been a nurse and teacher of nurses for all of his working life. Join us for this discussion with Tom as he shares his nursing stories, and how he is helping the next generation of nurses to have fulfilling careers and enhance the care we all rely on. Tom will describe how students work with the army, school pupils and the communities of Dundee so that student nurses at the University of Dundee have real life experience.

Tom will also share his thoughts as a male nurse, which make up just over 10% of registered nurses in the UK, and how more young men can be encouraged to take up nursing, in partnership with the #MenDoCare campaign.

National Digital Learning Forum

The National Digital Learning Forum has been looking at ways to better understand, engage and ultimately grow the digital learning and teaching community. Here is the information on this community and how you and your networks/schools/practitioners can get involved.

From the NDLF…..

We thought Yammer on Glow would be a great place to create a group to discuss all things related to Digital Learning & Teaching.

A Digital Learning and Teaching Community group has been established and can be accessed here: https://www.yammer.com/yammer.glowscotland.org.uk/#/threads/inGroup?type=in_group&feedId=9518651&view=all

The purpose of the group is to create the space to: discuss current issues relating to digital learning and teaching; share/suggest opportunities to use digital in the classroom across the curriculum; and to enable associated national developments to be highlighted and discussed (including our recently published Strategy)

It would be great if you could join and contribute your thoughts.

Cafe Science Dundee: Apes vs Humans: Social Traditions with Dr Lara Wood

Venue/Address    Avery & Co, 34 South Tay St, DD1 1PD
Date and time       Monday 14 November 2016, 7pm

Event/activity/ description

If you invited a chimpanzee to a dinner party would he know how to behave? Probably not, but whilst greeting and welcoming guests, sharing food and solving problems are usually seen as social traditions unique to humans, new research shows that this is not the case. Apes and monkeys share similar customs.

By studying apes in zoos and in the wild, and looking at how children learn in schools Dr Lara Wood (Abertay University), has observed how each group learns and how mimicking plays a role in learning social habits.

Join Lara, who has worked at the Living Links research centre at Edinburgh Zoo, as she discusses her research, including some fascinating findings that have changed the way we think about ape, monkey and human culture.

Dundee Arts Café: Games Consoles – A New Voice in Music with Dr Kenny McAlpine

Computer gaming and games design are one of Dundee’s major modern success stories, with the city shaping some of the World’s most successful games (Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto and Minecraft to name a few). New games were designed for the latest game consoles and the explosion in gaming culture led to gaming growing in to an industry that brings in more money than the music and film industries. With games console technology moving fast, some of our favourite consoles, like millions of Nintendo’s much-loved Game Boy, were left behind.

However, a new life beckons for some old consoles. Musicians are reusing Game Boy to create lo-fi electronic music (chiptunes) and other consoles are being rediscovered, reused and recycled in all manners of different ways.

Join Dr Kenny McAlpine (Abertay University) for this discussion on the chiptunes movement and other creative ways to recycle electronics, as Dundee Arts Cafe returns for a new series at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum.

Date and time         Monday 12th September 2016, 7pm

Event/activity/ description

Café Science Dundee: Stem cells: Hope, Hype and Hustlers with Dr Marios Stavridis

In the last 10-15 years stem cells have been catapulted from a relatively obscure research topic to the international limelight. Hardly a week goes by without some news story about a “ground breaking discovery” or “exciting new therapy” involving stem cells. Are these cells really as exciting as people think? What are they, where do they come from and how are they used in modern medicine? Why are private stem cell clinics springing up all over the world, and can they really deliver on their promises? What about the ethics of stem cell research?

This talk from Dr Marios Stavridis, University of Dundee, will give the long view on stem cell science from basic biology to the clinic and provide an insight on the current challenges and promises facing stem cell biology and the field of regenerative medicine.

Join us as Café Science returns for a new series at Avery & Co. at 34 South Tay Street on Monday 12th September 2016, at 7pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. There is no need to book in advance but arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Venue/Address:  The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum, Albert Square, Dundee DD1 1DA
Date and time:  Tuesday 7th June 2016, 6pm

Event/activity/ description:  During the winter of 2014 the UK was hit by an exceptional run of winter storms, leading to serious coastal damage and widespread flooding. Event/activity/ description

Good communication can be easy to spot but hard to achieve, and poor communication is often cited as the reason for problems. From project failures and medical errors to divorce, the consequences of poor communication are all too immediate. But what do we mean by effective communication and how can we learn to do this?

Janet McLean, from Abertay University, will discuss research looking at communication between pairs of speakers and listeners and she will outline how each partner can contribute to better communication.

Janet will also describe the development of communication skills in children showing that they become sensitive to the need to communicate effectively during childhood, with adults having a vital role to play in this. She will also consider whether the findings from inter-personal research can be applied to communication at a more society-wide level.

MARCH EVENTS FROM DUNDEE UNIVERSITY
Dundee Arts Café: Eco-Design and Low Energy Buildings

Venue/Address         The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum, Albert Square, Dundee DD1 1DA
Date and time           Tuesday 1 March 2016, 6pm

Event/activity/ description

Mind the Gap

When Volkswagen were caught out cheating emissions tests, the gap between performance promised by manufacturers and the reality was substantial, causing uproar.

But quietly, bubbling away under the surface and hidden under piles of paperwork are the predictions for every buildings performance. Just like buying a new fridge, all buildings have an energy rating A – E. But what is conveniently ignored is that these predictions are rarely worth the paper they are written on. The gap between prediction and reality can be enormous.

Why is this acceptable and how can we change this? Buildings can be complex but it is certainly possible to create warm and comfortable buildings that do what they say on the tin, costing next to nothing to run in the process. They can remove the building occupants from the volatile energy markets and take households out of fuel poverty. A shocking 29% of Scottish households are classed as being in fuel poverty.

New buildings can achieve this type of good performance right now. We don’t need fancy technologies or costly new solution.

Kirsty Maguire, award-winning architect, talks about her own projects in Scotland and around the world plus some examples of other leading UK practices to show how good design can perform, inspire – and even change the world – one step at a time.

The event lasts one hour, and speakers talk passionately about their work for 30 minutes before the floor is opened up to an informal discussion with the audience. All talks take place in The McManus Café, Albert Square, Dundee.

Everyone is welcome. Free. Non-bookable. Places are limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Doors open at 5pm.

Heads or Tails: How do Baby Animals Develop? with Dr Kim Dale

Venue/Address       Avery & Co, 34 South Tay St, DD1 1PD
Date and time         Monday 14 March 2016, 7pm

Event/activity/ description

Our bodies and those of other animals are remarkably complex and yet all start off as a single cell. So how then do animals develop structures including limbs, backbones, heads and in some cases tails?

Development biology seeks to understand how a single fertilised egg develops into the exquisite fully formed baby where everything forms at the right time and in the right place. We’ve discovered that this process is controlled by just a handful of molecules that communicate between cells.

This talk from Dr Kim Dale, University of Dundee, will explore two areas of baby animal development: how to build a skeleton and how cells decide to become different tissues, such as muscle or bone.

Join us at Avery & Co, 34 South Tay Street, Dundee on Monday 14 March 2016, at 7pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. There is no need to book in advance but arrive early to avoid disappointment.

EVENTS FROM DUNDEE UNIVERSITY

Dundee Arts Café:  Do Politicians Really Represent Us? With Dr Edzia Carvalho

Venue/Address       The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum, Albert Square, Dundee  DD1 1DA
Date and time         Tuesday 2nd February 2016, 6pm

Event/activity/ description

What does it mean to be represented in a political system where politicians are elected by individuals but are expected to tow their party line on policy? How has devolution changed people’s perceptions of being represented at different levels of government? Did it really matter that three of the seven party leaders debating each other in the 2015 election debates were women?

Dr Carvalho will examine the many ways in which the idea of political representation has been understood in political studies. She will also reflect on what this idea means to ordinary people by evaluating data gathered from talking to people across England, Scotland and Wales during the 2010 and 2015 UK general elections.

The event lasts one hour, and speakers talk passionately about their work for 30 minutes before the floor is opened up to an informal discussion with the audience. All talks take place in The McManus Café, Albert Square, Dundee.

There’s a lot more to forensic science than meets the eye. Quite literally! Because the human eye can only see a small section of the light spectrum, other types of light and detectors can help us see important details that are not visible to us, such as fingermarks, footwear marks and body fluids.

This talk will explore the importance of colour, contrast and different lighting techniques to visualise marks and residues at crime scenes, which are not visible to the naked eye. Forensic chemist, Dr Kevin Farrugia, from Abertay University, will describe past and recent advances in this field together with its importance in fighting crime.

Space, Planets and Solar Systems with Dr Soko Matsumura
Venue/Address    Avery & Co, 34 South Tay St, DD1 1PD
Date and time       Monday 9th November 2015, 7pm

Event/activity/ description
Until recently, the configuration of the planets in our Solar System was considered to be similar to that during its formation. This “quiet” picture of the Solar System formation started changing 20 years ago, when the first extrasolar planet was discovered around a Sun-like star.

Our current thinking suggests that giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn may have migrated toward the Sun first and then moved out to their current locations.  In this talk, Dr Soko Matsumura will describe a modern view of the formation of the Solar System and explain what this means for the origins of life on Earth.

Join us at Avery & Co, 34 South Tay Street, Dundee on Monday 9th November 2015, at 7pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. There is no need to book in advance but arrive early to avoid disappointment.
