School Improvement & How We Know We’re Doing Well

At Bowmore Primary School, we are always looking carefully at how well we are doing and how we can keep improving for our children, families and wider community.

Each year, we publish two key documents:

  • our School Improvement Plan (SIP)

  • our Standards and Quality Report (S&Q)

These help us share our priorities, celebrate successes and be open about where we are heading next.

Our School Improvement Plan (SIP)

Our School Improvement Plan sets out the main areas we are focusing on this session to support children’s learning, wellbeing and wider achievements. It is shaped by:

  • children’s views and ideas

  • staff professional dialogue and reflection

  • assessment information and tracking of progress

  • feedback from parents, carers and partners

  • self-evaluation using national guidance

At Bowmore, improvement is guided by our strong commitment to nurture principles and children’s rights. We believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued and included, and when their voices are listened to and acted upon. Our priorities reflect this, with a focus on positive relationships, inclusive practice and high-quality learning experiences for all.

We use the PACE model — Pedagogy, Attainment, Curriculum and Ethos — to structure our improvement work. This helps us ensure that every development we plan strengthens high-quality teaching, raises attainment, builds a broad and relevant curriculum, and supports a positive, inclusive school culture.

A parent-friendly summary and child-friendly targets are shared alongside the plan so everyone can understand what we are working on together.

Our Standards and Quality Report (S&Q)

Our Standards and Quality Report looks back over the past year to:

  • celebrate achievements across the school and Gaelic Medium Education

  • reflect on what has worked well

  • evaluate the impact of our improvement work on children’s learning and wellbeing

  • identify clear next steps for continued progress

It includes information about attainment, wider achievement, pupil voice and how we support children through a nurturing, rights-respecting approach.

Together, the SIP and S&Q show how Bowmore Primary School is continually improving to ensure every child is supported to reach their potential, feel a strong sense of belonging, and develop confidence as learners and citizens.

Our School Policies

Our policies explain how we work together as a school community to create a safe, caring and inclusive environment where children feel respected, supported and ready to learn.

At Bowmore Primary School, our policies are rooted in:

  • Nurture Principles – recognising the importance of relationships, emotional wellbeing and understanding behaviour as communication

  • Children’s Rights – supporting children to have a voice, feel listened to and be treated fairly and with dignity

  • Our shared values as a school community

  • National guidance and Argyll and Bute Council policies

These documents help ensure consistency, clarity and high standards across all areas of school life, including learning and teaching, wellbeing, inclusion, safeguarding and positive relationships.

All policies are reviewed regularly in line with Scottish Government legislation and local authority guidance. We aim to keep them clear, accessible and meaningful for families.

You can view or download our key policies below. Most are available as PDF or Word documents for ease of access. If you would prefer a paper copy or would like to talk through any policy, please contact the school office — we are always happy to help.

Children’s Rights at Bowmore Primary School

Our work at Bowmore Primary School is guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The following articles are particularly important in shaping our improvement work, policies and daily practice:

Article 3 – Best Interests of the Child

All decisions we make are guided by what is best for each child’s wellbeing, learning and development.

Article 12 – Respect for the Views of the Child

Children have the right to share their views and to have those views taken seriously. Pupil voice plays an important role in shaping our improvement priorities and school life.

Article 19 – Protection from Harm

Children have the right to be safe. Our policies and practices promote a nurturing, protective environment where children feel secure and supported.

Article 28 – Right to Education

Every child has the right to a high-quality education. Our improvement planning focuses on removing barriers to learning and ensuring equity and inclusion for all.

Article 29 – Goals of Education

Education should help children develop their talents, confidence and abilities, as well as respect for others, their community and the wider world.

Article 30 – Children from Minority or Indigenous Groups

Children have the right to enjoy their own culture, language and identity. This is reflected in our support for Gaelic Medium Education and the celebration of language, culture and heritage within our school community.
