Reading Schools

At Bowmore Primary, we are proud to be a Silver Reading School, recognising our strong commitment to building a positive reading culture across our school community.

The Reading Schools programme, developed by the Scottish Government, supports schools to create an environment where reading is valued, enjoyed and celebrated by all.

Our Reading Culture

We believe that reading is for everyone. Across the school, we promote reading for enjoyment as well as for learning, helping children to develop confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of books.

Children are encouraged to explore a wide range of texts, share recommendations and talk about what they are reading.

What This Looks Like in Our School

  • Regular opportunities for reading for pleasure in class
  • Access to a wide range of high-quality texts
  • Pupil voice in choosing and recommending books
  • Reading events and activities across the year
  • Links with families and the wider community to promote reading at home

Pupil Leadership

Our Reading Schools group plays an important role in leading reading across the school. Children organise events, promote books and help to create a welcoming reading environment for all learners.

Building Skills for Life

Through reading, children develop essential skills in literacy, communication and critical thinking. Just as importantly, they develop empathy, imagination and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Looking Ahead

As a Silver Reading School, we are continuing to build on our strengths and develop new opportunities to further embed reading for pleasure across our school, with the aim of achieving Gold in the future.
