Transitions

At Bowmore Primary, we recognise that transitions are important milestones in a child’s learning journey. We work closely with children, families and partner settings to ensure that all transitions are smooth, supportive and positive.

Starting Early Learning and Childcare (ELC)

When your child is offered a place in our ELC, you will be invited to visit, meet staff and children, and learn more about our setting.

We offer a gradual, supportive start, allowing children to settle in at their own pace with support from families and staff. Building strong relationships from the beginning helps children feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

Additional Year of ELC

Parents now have the option to request an additional year of funded ELC if it is felt this is in their child’s best interests.

This is an individual decision, and staff will work closely with you to support and guide this process, in line with the GIRFEC approach. If you are considering this, please speak to your child’s key worker.

Starting Primary One

We work closely with our ELC to ensure a smooth transition into P1. Children take part in visits and induction activities to help them feel confident and familiar with their new environment.

You can support your child by:

  • Talking positively about starting school
  • Involving them in getting ready (uniform, bag, lunchbox)
  • Attending induction events and keeping in touch with the school

Moving Through the School

Transitions don’t just happen once—they take place every year.

Before the summer holidays, children:

  • Meet their new teacher
  • Visit their new classroom
  • Take part in transition activities

Staff work closely together to share information about each child’s progress, learning needs and wellbeing to ensure continuity and support.

Transition to Secondary School

Most pupils move on to Islay High School at the end of P7.

We work closely with the high school to ensure a smooth transition, including:

  • Visits from secondary staff
  • Opportunities for pupils to visit the high school
  • Sharing information to support learning and wellbeing

Parents/carers will receive information about registration and transition arrangements directly from the local authority and secondary school.

Moving Between Schools

If a child moves to or from Bowmore Primary, we ensure that key information about their learning and wellbeing is shared with the new school.

Where possible, visits are encouraged to help children feel comfortable and confident in their new setting.

Supporting Every Child

Some children may require enhanced transition support. In these cases, we work with families and partner agencies to plan carefully and ensure the right support is in place.

Children and parents are fully involved in this process to ensure transitions are positive and successful.

Working Together

Strong partnerships with families are at the heart of successful transitions. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s transition, please contact the school—we are always happy to help.
