The Button Box

Kilcreggan Concert 2Pupils at Kilcreggan Primary recently entertained Parents and friends with a production of “The Button Box”. This fun musical is based around a story about two children staying with their grandparents who become bored on a rainy day. They knock Grandma’s button box over spilling an array of buttons onto the floor. They ask Grandma to tell them where all the buttons came from and the story behind each button is revealed in a song.

Our Visit to Winston Churchill’s by P5 pupil Brooklyn

Strone visit to Winston Churchill's 1On Thursday the 26th November, Strone Primary School went to Winston Churchill’s to talk to them about venison and all the things that you can make from venison. We wanted to visit because we wanted to find local produce that we could use for our evening meal that we are cooking in The Pier Hotel in Kilmun in the New Year.
We had decided upon venison sausages and wanted to see how they are made and where they come from.

Strone Primary Attends Taste for Tourism Conference.

Strone PS Taste for Tourism eventAs part of their Food for Thought project, funded by Education Scotland, Strone Primary School took five P5-7 pupils, Mackenzie, Romily, Millie, Duncan and Theo to the Taste for Tourism Conference in Oban last week. Two other Argyll schools, Ulva Primary and Ardrishaig were also presenting work at the event. Strone pupils organised their own stall, with a presentation of their work about local produce, and took baskets of delicious Apple and Bramble flapjacks they had made, to sell at the event.

Hermitage Primary Technology Challenge

Hermitage PS Technologies challenge 2015Bringing their interdisciplinary topic to a close, Primary 7 pupils at Hermitage Primary School took part in their Technology Challenge presentation evening on Wednesday 4th November.
Incorporating Technologies, Maths, Language, Science and PSD, the Technology Challenge required pupils to work in cooperative groups to plan and design a working electrical vehicle which was supported by a good business plan. Their progress had to be recorded in form of a booklet and a Keynote presentation.

Primary Four Harvest Festival Assembly

JLB Harvest 1This term, Primary Four reached out into their local community as part of their learning. They wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the importance that local organisations play in providing the needs of their local community. By investigating the traditions behind Harvest, the children decided to contact Helensburgh and Lomond Foodbank to see how they could help the individuals and families in their community who are not able to fully enjoy the Harvest Festival.

Strone Primary School get crafty!

Strone PS get crafty 1On Friday 25th September we took six pupils from the P5-7 class to a Textile Workshop with artist Deirdre Nelson at the Burgh Hall Pop Up Gallery in Dunoon, as part of Craft Scotland’s Meet your Maker campaign. Deirdre showed us round the exhibition of textile art at the gallery, and then we were given the chance get creative, using embroidery techniques to make pictures of the local area.

Global Citizenship Alive and Well at St. Joseph’s!

St Josephs Missio 2The children of St. Joseph’s Primary in Helensburgh were delighted to welcome Sr. Stacey of the order of ‘The Sisters of St. Peter Claver’ at assembly this week. Sr. Stacey gave a superb presentation on the work of ‘Missio Scotland’, a charity close to the heart of all the children at school. At specific times in the academic session, in a bid to support the missions, the children collect money for this charity.

Dunoon Primary win UK Kodu Kup 2015!!

DPS Win table kodu 2015Hands up – which Scottish primary school took on 300 schools from all over the UK and won hands down?

Dunoon Primary School, who fought off the cream of game designers from Scotland, England and Wales to bring home the Kodu Kup, Microsoft UK’s computer programming competition- bringing the prize to Scotland for the first time.

Health Week @ John Logie Baird

JLB Health Week 4 FunkyJohn Logie Baird Primary School children and staff took part in a variety of fun activities, to celebrate Health Week. The children’s activities included a presentation from SSPCA, Tae Kwon Do, Fruit demonstration and tasting by Waitrose, Big Pedal Cycling and Scooter event, the school sports day and nursery sports day, cardio tennis, rugby, mini kickers. Julie Smith of Funky Fitness put both children and staff through their paces with an energetic and fun filled day of fitness on the Friday to end the week in style.

Furnace pupil wins a national art competition!

Furnace Abbie wins national art competitionEveryone at Furnace are delighted that our P7 pupil, Abbie Wallace, took the top prize in the nationwide TECHBOT Competition, after her artwork was selected from more than 4,000 entries. Abbie has won for her school a brand new ClassBuddy(tm) ‘Charge and Sync’ trolley from LapSafe® Products, with her artwork displayed as a graphic on the doors. Abbie has also won us 5 brand-new iPad Air’s complete with cases and an iPad and case for herself to take home. The iPad cases also display the winning artwork.

St. Joseph’s STEM Engineers!

St Josephs S.T.E.M 002Engineering was big on the agenda at St. Joseph’s this year with Mrs McLean leading developments in Technologies throughout the school. The children loved the creative aspect of engineering and were enthralled by the visits of many parents who are engineers giving presentations to the children about their jobs. Mrs McLean then took on the challenge of affording every pupil in the school the opportunity to apply for the STEM leadership award.

Park Primary 7s Scoop Enterprise Award

Park PS Enterprise Award 1Last term, as part of a whole-school enterprise overarching theme, Primary 7s at Park decided to enter the Blythswood Challenge, for the second year running. This enterprise challenge gives a £20 starter fund and 4 weeks to make it grow. The class decided to organise fundraising activities and settled on a Cutest Pet Competition, a Parent/Child Netball Tournament, Lunchtime Challenges, a Sponsored ‘Stay Awake’ and they also sold items on eBay. In total, these activities raised a staggering £1067.15!
