Barcaldine Primary school children were invited along to Sutherland’s Grove on Tuesday afternoon to help plant Coastal Red Woods trees.
The weather was a bit wet to start but it soon dried up and the children along with Forestry Commission Scotland Craftsmen’s Peter MacArthur and Rory Maclean spent a couple of hours planting trees.
Last Thursday 27th March Islay Schools Bands held a fantastic concert, normally it is only the High School Band and the Primary Schools Band (children from all Primaries on Islay & Jura) but a brand new after school Band was formed last year to give younger children a chance to begin learning an instrument from Primary 3. They are called “Ceol na Cloinne” (Music of the Children) and they meet at Islay High School every Friday. Pupils in the P5-7 class have been studying the Highland Clearances and Scottish Emigration through the novel, The Desperate Journey by Kathleen Fiddler. This inter-disciplinary project has brought together drama, art, music and literacy as well as learning about the lives of the Highland people 150 – 200 years ago. Model crofts were made of clay then thatched using dried grass and rashes from the fields.
Barcaldine Primary School recently went along to Tesco in Oban to take part in their Farm to Food workshop.
The school children were met by Nicola Robertson who was wearing a lovely, bright yellow apron – certainly a beacon to follow because Tesco is huge!
The children of Luss Primary School in class P5-7 have gone blogging mad!
They decided that this year they would write a blog, in order to detail the development of their very special powan fish eggs. This means that the local and wider community can follow the various steps involved in caring for this endangered ice age fish. The children are delighted, as their blog has had views from as far afield as the USA and Australia.
Barcaldine Primary School hosted a Visions, Values and Aims Day whilst tying it in with Fairtrade.
We invited parents and guardians of the children as well as members of the local community so that they could come together and discuss the visions, values and aims of Barcaldine Primary School. The children partnered up with adults and voiced their opinions alongside their parents. On the 19th March 2014, Colgrain’s Primary 7 pupils spent the day at Park Church learning all about the Easter Story. When we arrived Andy Lang had made an Easter quiz for us to participate in. There were five different workshops held by several volunteers. The workshops included designing our own crucifixion cross to decorate the school hall with, getting our feet washed to represent Jesus cleaning his disciples’ feet, watching an Easter video which taught us about the sentence Jesus was given and lastly about the last supper.
Primary 3 in Park Primary School have been learning all about the Ancient Greeks this term! They found out where and when they lived, what their lives were like and how they have influenced our lives today. As a final outcome the children planned and hosted an Ancient Greek Day on Tuesday 25th March to share their learning with their families. There was an excellent attendance on the day and everyone had a great time!!
On Wednesday 5th of March Keills and Small Isles Primary travelled down to Port Charlotte School to do some team building challenges.
First we were put into teams and it was good because the groups had children from different schools. This meant we could make new friends. The first challenge we did was a dragon game. I liked it because you had to communicate with lots of different children. We had to try and catch the other teams’ dragon tails. It was great fun.
The P1 children were so excited to welcome Grannies and Grandas to their classrooms for a wonderful Tea Party this afternoon as part of their ‘Katie Morag’ topic.
Over 50 Grandparents were treated to some fabulous singing of well known Scottish Songs, including Ally Bally, Katie Bairdie and Ma Maw’s a Millionaire.
Barcaldine Primary School’s interdisciplinary topic for this term is The Victorians.
After all our research into the Victorian era it seemed a good idea to go long to visit the Victorian School in Scotland Street, Glasgow. The children got a chance to walk around the museum and see where the children went to class, where they played and even noticed the outside loo – thank goodness we had modern ones inside the museum! However, they did find it strange that the boys went in one door whilst the girls went through another but also that the infants had their own entrance as well/ Continue reading Barcaldine go back in time!
In Spring 2012, Small Isles children became involved in the Crofting Connections Project. During the summer term they invited the community to be involved too by hosting four Crofting Community Cafes in school. Each cafe had a crofting theme (Crofting the land, Life as a child, Crofting Culture and Crofting at Home) and a panel of ‘experts’ from the community were invited to come and share their memories and experiences of the theme by answering questions from the children, leading discussions and having drinks and home-cooked treats.

Gaelic unit P6/7 from Sandbank Primary (Bunsgoil Thaigh a’Chladaich) were learning about the history of the Holy Loch area over the past two hundred years. The work was organised by Fiona Lochhead from Kilmun Mausoleum who arranged for a weaver called Fiona MacDougall and a heritage worker called Robin Patel to come in and work with us.
We got a lot of information from the gravestones at Kilmun, including occupations, infant mortality and the gristly work of resurrectionists. Continue reading Sandbank’s Great Exhibition
“Primary 1 children in Castlehill invited Campbeltown Nursery to join them for a “Happy Healthy Me” morning.
Everyone had taster sessions in Yoga Bugs, Mini Kickers and Keep Fit. Louise, the school nurse, also spoke to the children about keeping their hearts healthy. A fruit kebab healthy snack was enjoyed by all.”
On Friday, the ‘Tasty Tuck Team’, aka Dalintober Primary’s Pupil Council members, launched a new initiative to encourage pupils to bring in healthy snacks for playtimes. They sold some tasty morsels – fruit, pitta breads and crackers – as suggestions and these ‘tasters’ went down a treat with their fellow pupils. Following the current project’s run, they hope that parents and pupils will continue to promote the healthy eating message.
What a magnificent fun day out Dunoon Primary P5 class had at Vikingar on Friday 7th March. The pupils were treated to a visit to a real life Viking Home and as they entered ‘strange aromas’ were evident of the Viking age. The informative guide quickly began to introduce us to a world of information on our topic, with lots of clever pupils answering questions testing their knowledge of the Vikings.
Ardchattan Primary School have celebrated World Book Day and International School Meals day with fun, food and fantastic fundraising for Mary’s Meals!
It all began six weeks ago at our Community Burns Supper when we announced the start of our Change for Mary’s Meals campaign. We have four of the blue Mary’s Meals mugs, one for each child in our school. Our target was to fill the mugs with enough small change to feed four children in Malawi for a year, a total of about £40.

Park Primary School has been a Fairtrade School now for over four years. This year the focus for Fairtrade Fortnight was bananas so Primary 3 wrote to local supermarkets Lidl and Tesco who kindly donated Fairtrade bananas to the school! Over the fortnight all classes had a focus on Fairtrade and found creative ways to use the bananas!
Catholic Education Week took place from 23 Feb until 01 March 2014 all over Scotland and the children of St. Joseph’s, Helensburgh eagerly took part.
The week started off on Education Sunday (23 February) with the parishioners receiving a report from the school giving a detailed account on developments in Catholic Education from the previous year; this was presented alongside detail of all the plans to develop Catholic Education in the forthcoming week at school. P4/5 were showing their creativity on Friday, 21st February and having a good time into the bargain, when they had the chance to work with Alison McAlpine on designing and making a banner which may end up in the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
