Tobermory High School recently presented its third musical production with two sell-out performances in the Aros Hall Tobermory. Dazzle, told the story of Poppy Pringle and the Dazzle Bay Fun Palace and featured a cast of 30 pupils from P5-S5. The cast all gave confident performances and delivered the songs with gusto. A live band helped to bring the story to life, and was made up of local musicians as well as friends of director, social subjects teacher, Ryan Lowe. Candyfloss and sticks of rock were sold at the interval to keep the fairground theme running from beginning to end. A fantastic show!

Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth
On the 4th of June some of the learning centre pupils of Dunoon Grammar school went to Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth. We won 4 medals, 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal. After a long day running we were all really sleepy, some of us had a sleep on the bus! We met lots of other kids from different schools in Scotland.

Ben More S1 induction
The annual Tobermory HS S1 Induction excursion to Mull’s Ben More resulted in another fantastic top out on a clear summit. Views to neighbouring Islay, Arran, Jura and as far reaching as Ireland and Skye greeted the new enthusiastic and energetic S1s. The objective of the day is getting to know each other better and so reaching the summit is a brilliant bonus.
Flushed With Success at Rothesay Joint Campus
Rothesay Joint Campus Eco Committee was invited to Edinburgh last week to discuss the findings of their enquiry into school toilets. The enquiry, ‘Flushed With Success’ was initiated by Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People and sounded just the sort of thing we would like to get our teeth into (in a manner of speaking!).
Over the last session we have conducted surveys about the Rights of the Child, questionnaires, created power points, had a poster campaign and uncovered the good, the bad and the ugly about school toilets!

Oban High and the Digital Commonwealth 2014
The nationwide Digital Commonwealth project run by UWS, focuses on lowering the threshold for involvement for individuals and groups so that they can be empowered to exploit creative tools and technologies to tell their stories, digitally. The project aim is to involve every Local Authority in Scotland in the digital reporting of the Commonwealth themes in the run up to the Queen’s Baton Relay. CLEAN SWEEP AT DUNOON GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Local residents of Kirn witnessed a welcoming sight last Friday afternoon (30 May 2014) as an army of school litter pickers took to the streets with one mission – to clean up the town.
Over 100 S1 pupils and staff – equipped with grippers and high visibility jackets supplied by the school’s facilities management providers Mitie – worked tirelessly scooping up and bagging litter from the school’s surrounding neighbourhood.

ARGYLL AND BUTE YOUNG ENTERPRISE
The annual Presentation Evening for Argyll and Bute Young Enterprise Companies was held on 1 May at the Argyll Hotel, Inveraray. Five companies were involved this year – 2 from Oban High School, one from Lochgilphead and 2 from Dunoon Grammar School. The judges – Donald Melville, Adviser from Business Gateway and Alex Emslie, retired Business Adviser had previously received copies of Company Reports to allow time to look them over and allocate marks for this part of the process.
Creative Apprenticeships: LIVE with Angela Constance MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Training, Youth and Women’s Employment
This event will provide an excellent opportunity for young people interested in a career in the creative or digital industries to learn more about apprenticeships as a possible career pathway.

Baird of Bute Scholarship
Rothesay Academy recently held an assembly in partnership with the Baird of Bute Society to announce the winners of The Inaugural Baird of Bute Canadian Scholarship. This scholarship has been organised by Mr Chris Markwell of the Baird of Bute Society, and will commence on the 18th of May for three weeks.
This years’ winners are Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden. They will spend three weeks in Canada and will be working with Professor Patrick Gunning at his lab in the University of Toronto.
Young Art Talent Emerging in DGS
Corrie MacDonald, S2 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School proudly presents Head Teacher Mr. Mitchell with a piece of original artwork to hang outside his office. Corrie finds some aspects of the curriculum very challenging and does a lot of his learning in the learning centre. But, amongst other things, Corrie has a real talent for art.
DGS pupil Shannon Brings Sunshine to Kirn Nursery
One of the four focuses (or capacities) of The Curriculum for Excellence is to encourage pupils to become effective contributors to their communities. What better way to do this than to volunteer some time to help out at a local nursery school. This is what Shannon Lyon, S5 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School and full time pupil in the learning centre, has been doing since August 2013.

P.7 Science and Technology Day at Islay High School
In conjunction with the ‘Bright Sparks’ joint science project, Primary 7 children across Islay and Jura spent the day at Islay High School involved in a range of learning experiences working with pupils from different schools. ‘Bright Sparks’ was the name given to a project planned and implemented by teachers of senior pupils across the five primary schools. In collaboration with Mr Phil Kitching and the rest of the Science Department at the High School, a variety of exciting activities and challenges were organised. Dunoon Grammar School – Loch Fyne Oysters Visit
Two S3 Hospitality classes visited Loch Fyne Oysters and saw where the oysters and mussels were produced and packaged ready for sale locally and around the world. The classes then visited the Restaurant and Oyster Bar where they enjoyed a presentation and an opportunity to try different varieties of smoked salmon, bradan rost and oysters.

Oban Schools Premiership Experience
On the 14/15th March, 43 pupils from 5 schools (Park, Rockfield, St Columba’s, Lochnell and Oban High) enjoyed a Premiership Experience football weekend in Newcastle and Sunderland. Over the weekend the boys and girls enjoyed a stadium tour of St James’ Park, a training session with Newcastle United coaches and watched Sunderland v Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light. The pupils had a great time meeting and mixing with pupils from other schools. The photo was taken during the stadium tour.
Band news from Islay……
Members of Islay High School Band and the Primary Schools Band travelled to Glasgow last Thursday 20th March. While we were in Glasgow the children heard and worked with world class professional musicians, and had a fantastic tour of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Both Bands also competed at the Mid Argyll Music Festival and played very well indeed, and as an added bonus the Primary Band was awarded the” Helen & Hugh Smith Trophy”. CGS Commonwealth lesson
Three pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School visited Dalintober Primary Five to teach them about the Commonwealth country they will be representing at a mini Commonwealth games in June. The class heard interesting facts about New Zealand and a quiz at the end showed that they had been taught well by their new, enthusiastic teachers.
Lochgilphead Primary 1 pupils invade S4 classroom.
Pupils of Lochgilphead High School Princes Trust 4xl group held a ‘show and tell ‘day for 40 pupils of primary 1 as part of their WW 1 project. The group spent months researching into their specific topic and as much time perfecting their timings and the best activity to entertain the children. Ashley spoke all about the airplanes of WW1 and had three Lego models on show and lots of colouring sheets for the children to show off their artistic talents. Victorian CCTV Camera – or Camera Obscura: You Decide.
Pupils from Lochgilphead High School Princes Trust 3xl group spent 3 days in Edinburgh as part of their photography project. They stayed at the wonderfully equipped Forth Lodge based in Bonaly outdoor centre. The group visited the Camera Obscura to learn about different aspects of imagery, textures and optical illusions. There were 5 floors full of new and exciting interactive fun. Dunoon Grammar School’s Mathematicians
Dunoon Grammar School’s team of four mathematicians from S1 and S2 won 12th place in the UKMT Team Challenge held at the University of the West of Scotland. The team enjoyed competing against 28 other teams from the west of Scotland region. The challenge consisted of four rounds including a cross-number, maths shuttle and an intense relay race. Congratulations to Hazel Oxland, Willow Grieve, Conor Adams and Katie Lambert for an excellent result against some very fierce competition.
