Pupils at Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating success at the recent Inverclyde Cross Country Championships held earlier this month in Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm.
Second year twins Nuala and Cliona McCheyne finished first and second in the S2 race, with Niamh Doherty winning the S1 girl’s race and Alan Mollins claiming second in the S1 boys race.

Pupils at Dunoon Grammar School are putting the final touches to what will be a fun and exciting night on Saturday 22nd November at their race night taking place in Cowal Golf Club.
There are many opportunities for success on the night with prizes to be won on the races, raffle and other competitions that will be available on the night. Entry is free and DGS would like to extend the invite to everyone in the whole community.
The event will help to raise funds for the Gaelic trip to Canada in March 2015.
In June 2013, a number of pupils from Dunoon Grammar School joined together to create a short film to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking. The film was called ‘The Last Cigarette’ and was made by passionate drama students along with the help of David Hayman’s film company, Shooters and NHS Highland. The film originally came about because the NHS had asked the Charity Spirit Aid, also operated by David Hayman, to come up with ideas for an anti-smoking video that would be aimed at young people and would encourage them to not only stop smoking but not to start in the first place. On Wednesday 29th October a group of pupils from the S3 Numeracy project attended a Challenge Day at Clydeview Academy. The pupils spent the day working in teams, made up of both schools, trying to solve logic puzzles and problem solving questions. Pupils from both schools worked very hard to be part of the winning team but with only two unsolved puzzles and more than half of the problem solving puzzles correct the winning team included Briege Liddell and Evan Meyer-McDonagh from DGS. Former SPL Star Visits DGS
It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.
Marvellous Macmillan Coffee Morning at DGS
DGS Staff and invited visitors enjoyed a fantastic coffee morning organised by pupils from the school’s learning centre on Thursday, 2 October – all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Dance Leaders from Campbeltown Grammar School came along to Dalintober Primary on Friday 3rd October to teach some energetic routines to P1-7 girls as part of the celebration of Active Girls Day. Everyone had a fantastic time and Dalintober would like to thank Morgan, Kathryn, Chloe and Hannah for giving up their time and showing us some new moves!
Three senior physics students at Dunoon Grammar School enjoyed success in the first round of the West of Scotland Physics Education Group competition.
S5 pupils Rowan Oxland, Peter Swift and Scott Morton worked on a number of University standard physics experiments before putting their knowledge to the test in a series of quiz style tasks.

MOVING MOMENTS AT THE MOVIES
As part of this year’s Dunoon Film Festival, S3 pupils from DGS organised a special screening of the Japanese cult classic animation ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ for local primary school pupils and DGS Learning Centre students.
Ms Howitt from Dunoon Grammar School initiated a transitional topic for the Gaelic medium pupils of Sandbank Primary School where they could gradually get to know the staff, subjects and building during their last couple of years at Primary. The pupils were already working upon an enquiry based local history project which allowed many opportunities for interdisciplinary work, some of which were suitable for the Grammar staff to lead.
Science lessons with a twist for DGS pupils.
Pupils and visitors to Dunoon Grammar School last week were greeted with a curious addition to the school car park – a science laboratory based in an articulated lorry!
During the week a number of pupils worked in the lorry on a number of physics related experiments. Lab in a Lorry – organised by the Institute of Physics and STEM – is an interactive mobile science laboratory which gives young people the opportunity to explore science through open ended experiments. On Cowal Games Friday, 13 pupils from DGS put on a marvellous performance in front of members of the Lamont and Campbell Clans in Dunoon’s Queens Hall – re-enacting the siege of Toward Castle and the Dunoon Massacre of 1646.
The pupil’s had been given an initial story line from the Clan Lamont Society on the lead up to the performance – but then had to develop the story into a creative re-enactment.

Campbeltown Grammar School golfers get up close to the Ryder Cup Pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School welcomed the Ryder Cup to Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club in Kintyre on a tour of Scotland before the Gleneagles event tees off on 26th September. On that date Europe’s top golfers will take on those of the USA for the 2014 Ryder Cup – from 26th to 28th September. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup director, says: ‘This is about sharing the magic of the Ryder Cup. Pupils, parents and staff from Dunoon Grammar School gathered at the school at 6.30 am last Thursday (26 June) to bid a fond farewell to German partners as the 2014 edition of the Dunoon Grammar School and Hardenberg Gymnasium exchange came to a close.

Over 180 S6 pupils, staff and their families enjoyed a samba inspired BBQ last Thursday evening (26 June) to mark the end of a successful school year.
The school yard was transformed into the ‘Copacabana Courtyard’ – complete with inflatable palm trees – as pupils and staff enjoyed a World Cup themed afternoon that included a bbq, beach volleyball, limbo dancing, football target challenge and trampoline.

Campbeltown Pupils’ Manager Norman Thomson visited Dalintober Primary last week with two of his squad members, John McCallum and Stuart Crossan, to take part in a Q & A and coaching session with the school football players and referees. They also brought along the League Trophy they recently secured and their medals. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we look forward to welcoming them back for future coaching sessions. Robert Miller, a 4th year pupil at Dunoon Grammar School recently visited Dunoon Primary School to talk about his recent nomination as Baton Bearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay. During his enthusiastic presentation he said he was surprised to hear he had been selected from so many community nominations as up to 4000 Baton Bearers from 34 local authorities will take part in the relay.

S4 Xl students had to do some quick thinking after the students arriving from Laurinburg, North Carolina were delayed for 24 hours in Philadelphia. The group had booked the Assembly Hall and had planned a Welcome Meeting for the students arriving; they had also arranged musicians, a singer, dancers and teas, coffees and cakes. Unfortunately the following day when the visitors did arrive at the school the hall had been previously booked so therefore wasn’t available.
