Victoria Postcard Project
This project is part of the Rothesay Town Heritage Initiative, celebrating Rothesay’s Victorian past. Argyll and Bute Primary children from Kilmodan, St Mun’s, Toward, North Bute and St Andrew’s have already been participating during May. This has involved interdisciplinary activities such as using traditional, Victorian style dip pens and ink, drawing and writing postcards, and, some ‘pop up history’ from a Victorian visitor from Rothesay in the year 1887.
Islay and Jura Primary Schools Trip to Stirling
All the P6/7 children of Islay and Jura got together for a fantastic trip to Stirling last week! New friendships were made and old ones were resurrected as the children spent four days together learning about the history of Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument as well as enjoying the engineering wonder of the Falkirk Wheel! The views over Stirling were magnificent.

“I hope there are many more Learning Festivals!”
“I hope there are many more Learning Festivals!”, “ It’s a great way to discover what your child is learning and being able to join in!”, “ The school was buzzing with excitement!” These were just a few of the comments from parents and friends of Bowmore Primary School. Inspired by the SECC Learning Festival, Bowmore Primary decided to hold their very own Learning Festival on May 3rd for parents to attend. This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to share many aspects of their learning with friends and family.

SAMBA!
Primary 5 pupils at St. Andrew’s Primary school have been discovering the art of Samba drumming and learning about the music and culture of Brazil. Led by their enthusiastic instructor, Stephen McNally, they showed off their new found musical skills to family and friends in an open-air concert, on Thursday 9th May.
Tayvallich’s Medieval Mayhem!
Tayvallich Primary School and Kilmartin House Museum hosted a medieval day of fun, for their Northern Irish friends from Mill Strand Integrated Primary. We did a round robin of activities, which included medieval cooking outside (which tasted fantastic!), a tour of Dun Mhuirich (where we showed everyone the medieval house which had been discovered), made a graveslab each for a medieval soldier with clay and we learnt some Scottish Country Dancing with Mary and John Gillies (which came in useful later!). Rhu P5 Tudor Banquet
P5 Pupils at Rhu recently celebrated the end of their Tudor topic with a Tudor banquet. There was Tudor food, music and costumes to help create a fantastic atmosphere. The children also chose their favourite part of the topic and each prepared a short presentation for their class mates. Thankfully there were no executions and the peasants and royalty got on just fine! Well done to the children for their efforts and a big thanks to the parents who helped prepare food and costumes.
Parent planning meeting at Rhu
P1 and 2 at Rhu, had a very eggciting start to the term when they discovered a giant egg in the playground. After the mysterious creature hatched, the children decided to make a study of dinosaurs. As is our practice, we talked to the children about what they knew about dinosaurs and what they might like to learn. In order to involve the parents, we sent out a letter inviting them to a planning meeting. To accommodate working parents we provided a reply box and an opportunity to email suggestions.
Rhu Primary P1 & P2’s Eggstrordinary Find!
Having just returned from the Easter holidays, P1 and P2 could not believe their eyes when they discovered a nest containing a giant egg in their playground. It was the talk of the school, as they began to investigate the appearance of the mysterious egg. To safe guard the nest they taped off the area and made warning signs. The children kept watch on the egg and on the third day, it finally hatched. The mysterious creature was nowhere to be found and the children decided to set up an investigation using the evidence that was left behind. Portrush Pupils Have Landed
Last week Mill Strand Integrated Primary School from Portrush, County Antrim came to visit Tayvallich Primary School for 3 days as part of our shared Heritage Lottery Funded Project-where we are re-establishing our links between Argyll and Northern Ireland.

Dervaig Primary School
Primary 4-7 have been learning about Japan. Today we were very lucky to have a visit from Mr & Mrs MacKinnon. Mrs MacKinnon is Japanese and shared with us her knowledge of life in Japan. She talked about her school days and the many celebrations that happen throughout the year. Mr MacKinnon worked in Japan teaching English and gave us an insight into living in a Japanese village. The pupils played an exciting game to help learn a very simple alphabet. We finished the morning doing origami when we all made a samari helmet.
Lochnell’s Island and Coastal Explorers
Lochnell pupils from Primary 5 and 4 took part in the Island and Coastal Explorers Project with Stramash.
The children had an active day exploring Kerrera and a great outdoor learning experience, finding out about the history of the Island as well as the wildlife and geology.
Burns organising committee
On the 5th Feb the organising committee for the Local schools Burns event met for the second time to confirm their plans for the day. The representatives from Rockfield, Lochnell and Kilninver’s Pupil councils printed certificates and organised nametags and presentations. Hopefully the arrangements we have made will ensure that the day runs smoothly.

St. Andrew’s Primary – Ancient Egypt Presentation
Pupils from Primary 3/4 and Primary 4/5 at St. Andrew’s Primary School invited family and friends along to a presentation of their learning on Ancient Egypt.
Primary 3/4 talked about life in Ancient Egypt. They explained the importance of the River Nile and the differences in the lifestyles of the rich and the poor.
Primary 4/5 then demonstrated the mummification process, step-by-step.

Strone Primary Parents Evening – Strone Gallery Opening
Strone Primary School had a very successful Open Evening last week. It was a chance for the children to showcase all their hard work over the past term. We were also able to give parents a wee taster of our Friday afternoon skills clubs. We have been learning ukulele, and keyboard skills and we also had a Forest and Beach club that went out each week, taking the curriculum outdoors.

INDIA AFTERNOON AT PORT ELLEN
On the 26th of March Primary 6&7 and Primary 3&4 had a India afternoon. We invited parents and we had stalls ready for the parents to interact with. To start off the day we showed power points on different celebrations in India we also made Indian God masks to show to our parents. In p3/4 there was a shadow puppet show of Rama and Sita and Rangoli patterns to do also hand paints and guess the spice. We also set up a build the Taj Mahal with lego stall.
Chinese New Year at Strone Primary School
On Thursday the 21st February, Xin a lady from Shanghai in China came to Strone Primary school to talk to us about how they celebrated Chinese New Year in China.
We had an assembly in the morning and Xin talked to us about Chinese culture. She showed us pictures of people celebrating Chinese New Year and talked to us about the Chinese zodiac, the Great Wall of China and told us how to say ‘Happy New Year’. Southend Lifeboat Visit
The P1 and P3 class are learning all about lifeboats, lighthouses and the sea in their IDL project, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. One of the many activities this week was visiting the Machrihanish Seabird Observatory and the Campbeltown Lifeboat Station. Last week we had a splendid afternoon in the company of Mr Hector Lamont, who was a lighthouse keeper at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. Mr Lamont and his wife were stationed at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse about 6 miles from Southend School.
Tarbert Primary 7 Visit to Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery
Recently Primary 7 visited Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery as part of their WWII topic. It was a very enjoyable day when the class dressed up and had some hands-on experience with gas masks, gas rattles (very noisy), shells made in Clydebank (without the explosive content on this occasion), etc. The story of the Clydebank Blitz was very interesting and we visited the actual command centre at the time, a basement room in the library, where we made an electrical light circuit and passed morse messages to each other.

Luing Primary School, Project on Castles
Continuing our project on castles, all of the pupils were asked to research a castle for homework. They could record their findings in any way they wished, written work, pictures, photos, models or a combination of any of these.
There was much excitement on Monday when the children brought their work to school; fantastically created models small and large appeared, with one small model being edible!
