We had heard that an amazing plane was coming to visit Connel Airport. As it was just along the road, we decided to go for a visit. Not only did we get a visit inside the Catalina, we also learned some fantastic facts from members of the crew. We were also very surprised to see vintage cars parked around the plane. We had so many questions about the plane and the cars that we decided to tackle a topic on Transport – Then and Now.
Dunoon Primary School’s P5 class visited the Castle House Museum on Thursday 3rd October as part of their Interdisciplinary Topic about Cowal. The children enjoyed learning about Cowal in the past and comparing the differences between now and then! The exhibits they enjoyed most were the film show, replica of the inside of Highland Mary’s House, Victorian Classroom and looking at all the paddle steamers that used to sail up and Doon the Watter!!

Children from all 3 Bute Primary schools defended Rothesay Castle from an invasion by Vikings on 28th September.
Primary 7 pupils had prepared costumes, and weapons to use on the day.
The Vikings arrived by Longboat and quickly stormed the Castle. A fierce battle followed but Bute emerged victorious and celebrated with a torchlit procession and fabulous firework display. Continue reading Viking Invasion Thwarted on Bute!
As part of their work about Crofting Connections, the P5-7 at Small Isles Primary school had a very exciting day when they went to the Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow on Tuesday 17th September. They went to attend a party to open their exhibition which was about crofting in the past, present and future on Jura. Lots of people who had connections with Jura came to see it too. The P5-7s also took part in a Rainforest Explorers work shop which was great fun. They looked around the museum all day long and had a VIP guided tour around it. Primary 7 at John Logie Baird Primary School made the long trip through to Edinburgh recently to visit the Scottish Parliament. After a visit to the Education Centre where we learned about the history of the parliament in Scotland and where asked to use our brains, we went on a tour of the building. We were lucky enough to be allowed into the Debating Chamber and learned many interesting facts about that room such as where the Presiding Officer sits and just how busy the reporters for the parliament are! On Tuesday 27th August Primary 6&7 went on an archaeological dig to Rubha Port an t-Seilich on Islay because they are doing a topic on life in Mesolithic times. The dig was run By Professor Steven Mithin from Reading University and a team of archaeologists.

Iona Primary School children were amazed when the Northern Ireland Minister for Justice popped in yesterday to thank them for a gift. David Ford from Stormont Castle came to thank the children for the very special book about Iona that the pupils had lovingly made from scratch (including the paper).
Former Head Teacher, Liz Kennedy, had had the inspired idea for this special book to be transported in the coracle that was sailing to Ireland as part of the St Columba’s Celebrations at the end of term. Our topic for this term was Australia and it seemed fitting that we finish off the term with an Aussie day!! We were all prepared with our Aussie style hats (corks and all!!), green and yellow colours, several boomerangs as well as a didgeridoo.
Parent Council members kindly offered to make us our lunch – Australian style!! We had a variety of meats cooking on the BBQ with salads and rolls to go along with them. We finished off our lunch with ice-cream cones with an Australian flag instead of a flake!!

Park Primary’s P6/5, P7/6 and P7 classes all took a trip through the decades during their end of year concert last night (Thursday 20th June) to celebrate 40 years of Park Primary. From the 70s to the present day, the classes performed songs and dance routines to “old favourites” such as Abba and Queen and even performed a hilarious sketch of “Blind Date”! The hall was absolutely packed and a great time was had by all audience members, cast and crew involved in the show. Well done to everyone who took part and performed so well last night!
On Thursday the 16th of May Port Charlotte School went on an excellent trip to Finlaggan and Dunyveg. P5/6/7 went with Mr Mackie, Mrs MacTaggart, Mrs McLellan and Mrs Coughlin. We went because our topic is the Lords of the Isles and we wanted to know more about them.
We found out that the Lords of the Isles were only MacDonalds, they could not be MacLeans. Women couldn’t be Lords of the Isles either in those days. They ruled right down the west coast.

Pupils in P4-7 have been learning about Southend’s connection with Saint Columba as part of local celebrations to mark 1450 years since the saint landed in Scotland from Ireland. With local amateur historians they visited the site of the Saint’s footsteps. The choir performed a Gaelic song at the annual Saint Columba Conventicle also held at the footsteps.
Originally inspired by African mud dolls sent to us by Olngarua School in Kenya, Miss Brown and the Primary 1-4 pupils from Craignish Primary have been involved in an exciting clay dig project this term. The aim of this project was to enable the children to make direct comparisons between our culture and those of children living in Africa. We had an amazing time on our ‘clay day’ where we got to dig local clay, listen to African stories inside a tipi, create woven willow balls and create patterned clay tiles by pressing natural materials into them.
To celebrate the centenary of the Picture House in Campbeltown, Home Economics pupils in S1 and S2, studied the history of the Picture House in Campbeltown, using the internet and “The Wee Pictures” website.
Pupils found it fascinating to see the huge changes which have been made over the years, taking into account the changes in society and the impact of technology.
Following their investigations, everyone got their “designer hats” on to come up with ideas for a celebration cake for the event.

Primary six shared their recent learning about the Titanic with the school and their parents during their Titanic assembly.
They enjoyed sharing the information that they had gathered through personal and class research as well as dressing up as the different passengers who had boarded the Titanic on that fateful journey.
S1/2 in Tobermory completed their RME conferences for this year with a day on the theme of Death and the Afterlife. This could have been a particularly difficult theme to work on but S1/2 participated in the day in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. The group started the morning together discussing why we have funeral services and went to the church where Mr Paton talked through some of the ways in which people deal with loss and how a funeral might look in the Church of Scotland and how funerals have changed over the years. On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd May a return visit of around forty S2 Lochgilphead High School History pupils took place at Dun Muirich medieval fort at Tayvallich to take part in an actual archaeological dig, thanks again to the generosity of Kate Moody of Kilmartin House Museum and Roddy Reagan, the archaeologist in charge . The weather was good over the two days, and the minibus swiftly took four runs back and forth to the site, accompanied again by either Mr Wire or Mr Kemp of the Social Subjects Department.

Our Primary 2/3 class visited the SS Glenlee last Friday. They had a great day dressed as pirates and learning about life on the ocean waves as a pirate. At the end of the afternoon they were sent on a treasure hunt and all came back to school with a “pocket of gold”. Well worth a visit if you are looking for an exciting day out for your class.
Last week Kilmodan Primary School had another successful tearoom. We have been running a tearoom for the last three years. This year we are raising money for our school to go to Edinburgh for two days. While we are there we will be going to the zoo, Edinburgh Castle and we hope to go to the cinema. The children do home baking for every tearoom and serve the tea and coffee. It is a great time for the whole community to get together.

Port Ellen Primary 3&4 and 6&7 have been learning about India. In the topic we have had Glow Meets with teachers and students at Arwachin Bharti Bhawan School in Delhi in India. We got the chance to ask them questions about life in India. It was surprising that we have so much in common; they like TV like The Simpsons and Family Guy, music like Taylor Swift and films like James Bond, and their English was much better than our Hindi!
