Rothesay Joint Campus Eco Committee was invited to Edinburgh last week to discuss the findings of their enquiry into school toilets. The enquiry, ‘Flushed With Success’ was initiated by Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People and sounded just the sort of thing we would like to get our teeth into (in a manner of speaking!).
Over the last session we have conducted surveys about the Rights of the Child, questionnaires, created power points, had a poster campaign and uncovered the good, the bad and the ugly about school toilets!

Commonwealth Games
Rothesay Primary were delighted to be asked to send another 50 pieces of art for the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village. Initially, we sent 10, as the winners of an art competition, but Game On Scotland were so impressed with our entries that they asked for more – a lot more!

Commonhealth games
Cardross Primary had a visit from Hopscotch theatre company. They performed ‘The Commonhealth Games’, it was a super production enjoyed by everyone!
Christian Aid Netball/Football
Cardross Primary were the winners at the recent Christian Aid Netball Tournament organised by Mrs Clark from Garelochhead Primary. The standard of play was amazing with St Joseph’s, Rhu, Colgrain and Cardross in the semi-final stages. Cardross were given a tough match against Colgrain Primary in the final. It was a great event and many thanks to all of the players, coaches and volunteers at the event.
Cardross haven’t lifted the trophy since 2001 and we were delighted!
Strone Primary Clubs
Every Tuesday afternoon pupils from Strone Primary School are taking part in a choice of four activity clubs. This term we have on offer Golf at Strone Golf Club, Commonwealth Cookery, Outdoor Art, and Outdoor Activities at Hunter’s Quay Holiday Village. The picture shows the pupils at Hunter’s Quay Holiday Village all prepared for an afternoon of being Junior Explorers.

Whilst our P4-7’s were enjoying the sunshine at the Police Sports Day in Dunoon, our P1-3’s dined outside at lunchtime to make the most of the fantastic weather. A big thank-you to our kitchen staff Mrs Rodger and Miss Lees for setting up the tables and waitressing.
GAME ON DRAMA -COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Yesterday saw our Primary 7/6 class working very hard with Shona Freeman from One Day Creative on a drama based on the Commonwealth Games. Pupils spent the morning learning their parts for a story about a young boy whose talents lay in sporting activities. Billy was training to take part in the Junior Commonwealth Games and couldn’t believe what he was seeing when his teacher introduced him to an athelete who would help him train. What a coup for St Joseph’s!
What a result for the netball team of St Joseph’s at the recent Christain Aid Netball Tournament. Under the excellent tuition of Geraldine Wilkie of G84 the team have climbed the ranks from 10th last year to 4th – phenomenal leap which was widely commented upon on the night! The whole school was delighted to hear the news and celebrated the team’s success. It’s onwards and upwards now for St. Joseph’s team!
St Joseph’s Visit The Sunshine Room
Primary 2’s from St Joseph’s Primary School had a very special morning when they visited their classmates at The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School. The pupils came together for a storyteller event by Bea Ferguson. Bea told some great stories, she told us one about a possum and some fairies who loved cakes, she also taught us some funny songs. Marine Biology Visit to Luss
Pupils in P5-7 at Luss Primary School were lucky enough to have a visit from the Loch Lomond Fisheries Trust. Ms. Bryce, who is a marine biologist and Mr. Adams, showed the children a wonderful slideshow of photographs explaining all about the native and invasive species which live in Loch Lomond.
Club Golf at Kilmartin P.S.
All of the children in the school had the most wonderful time recently when they got the chance through Active Schools to learn some golfing skills. Over four weeks the children learned to putt and chip turning the school’s beautiful grounds into their own golf course! All of the wonderful golf equipment is now ours to keep and we plan to start a golf after school club in August. You never know – maybe some of our Kilmartin children will play in the Ryder Cup in the future.
BRAZILLIAN STREET BAND
For the last six weeks pupils from P5-P7 have been taking drumming lessons from Roddy, a member of the CAST team and today saw the final performance. Pupils and parents were invited to attend and we had a packed audience. Everyone had such a great time. There was clapping, cheering and even dancing in aisles. Our band has now been invited to join the Sea Change Festival Parade on Saturday 21st June, so if you want a fun day out go along and join in (details in local press).
Oban Musical Success for Rockfield Pupils
Children from Oban’s Rockfield Primary had a fantastic time at the recent Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival, taking part in a range of competitions involving over 100 children from pre-school to P7.
The Festival’s Action Song class is an event in itself. Rockfield’s Gaelic pre-school and P2/1 Gaelic class performed Seo a’ Chroit aig Calum Ruadh, a Gaelic version of ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm’, while the P2 classes performed The Fireman.

Oban Pupils Present Prize-winning Gaelic Drama
Pupils from Rockfield Primary School’s P1-4 Gaelic classes performed a prize-winning play at the recent Argyll and Lochaber Gaelic Drama Festival, held in Oban’s Corran Halls.
The children presented ‘An t-Each Acrach’ about a very hungry horse, and were delighted that their performance was awarded the prize for best costumes and props.

Salen Success
Pupils and staff at Salen Primary were delighted to hear we have been awarded a Sport Scotland Gold Award for achieving excellence in physical education and school sport. The staff found out on Friday but we decided to keep it a secret so we could announce it at the start of our Commonwealth Games Week.

Oban High and the Digital Commonwealth 2014
The nationwide Digital Commonwealth project run by UWS, focuses on lowering the threshold for involvement for individuals and groups so that they can be empowered to exploit creative tools and technologies to tell their stories, digitally. The project aim is to involve every Local Authority in Scotland in the digital reporting of the Commonwealth themes in the run up to the Queen’s Baton Relay. WALKING THE KINTYRE WAY
Pupils from Drumlemble and Carradale Primary Schools spent a day walking part of the Kintyre Way. We were accompanied by Duncan Leckie and Sharon Baikie.
Pupils used their map reading skills and the waymarkers to plot their route and took photographs of interesting features of the landscape.
We would like to thank Anne, Duncan and Sharon from the Kintrye Way for supporting us and engaging us in our learning.
Troll Hunting on Inchcailloch Island
Helen Kennedy, Park Ranger, got in touch with The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School to ask for their help with some anti-social trolls on Inchcailloch Island, the trolls were causing all sorts of havoc but the pupils were able to show off their troll hunting skills and teach them to respect their habitat. We also had time to look at some native wildlife, toast marshmallows on a campfire and play some team games on the beach.
First Communion Celebration at St. Mun’s
The sun shone on Saturday, 31st May, as 7 children from Primary 4 made their First Holy Communion.
The children, under the watchful eye of their teacher Miss L. O’Kane, delivered a beautiful, well prepared Mass to a packed church, full of friends, family, parishioners and staff and children from the School and sang beautifully as they invited everyone to, ‘Come And Join The Celebration’.
