Good morning P1! Tuesday 9th June 2020

Good morning everybody,

I hope your week has been nice so far. I made some flapjacks last night and they were tasty – I put cherries in them! What do you like to cook or bake? Here is the recipe that I used. It says to use dairy-free spread but of course you can use regular butter or margarine if you have that in your fridge.

They are nice and sticky and you get to lick the syrupy spoon after measuring it in… YUM! I hope you enjoy them!

Game time!

You have all been doing such a fabulous job practising reading at home – here is a silly game you can play at home to practise reading some sentences with an adult or older sibling.

Print or write the following sentences on separate pieces of paper (feel free to add your own ones in as well if you want more) and turn them face down but not on top of each other. Take turns to choose one to read. Read the sentence and see if the answer is YES or NO. If it is YES, you get a point, if the answer is NO, the other player gets a point. Read all the sentences and count up your points!

If you don’t want to print or write these out – you could play the same game, but just take it in turns to read a sentence from the screen!

Have a fabulous day everyone and remember just do what you can and let your teacher know if you need any help or support with anything – we will be delighted to hear from you and will always try and help with anything we can!

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Monday 8th June 2020

Good afternoon everyone,

Today is World Oceans Day so I wanted to share a PowerPoint with you that talks about Plastic Pollution in the Deepest Ocean.

Plastic Pollution in the Deepest Ocean

This power point explores a science news story showing that plastic has reached the lowest point in our planet 11,000 metres below sea level. The language in the PowerPoint is quite tricky, but it is a great starting point for a conversation about how plastic pollution is hurting our planet.

I would also like to share a link with you that might help with your learning about time and clocks this week – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/time/teaching-clock. It is a great way to explore analogue and digital clocks. Perhaps take it in turns to be the teacher and ask the other person to make a certain time on the clock.

Have a lovely week P1, we miss you!

Your P1 Teachers 😀

Good morning Primary one, Monday 8th June 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. It was nice to see the sun come out for a while again. Hopefully we will see more of it this week. I went for some lovely walks this weekend. One was down at the loch and we saw some ducklings. They were very cute.

Our story this week is Cinderella, a well known fairy tale that I think all of you will have heard. Here is a link to listen to the story.

There are lots of different twists on Fairy tales. Maybe you could have a little look and see what ones you find. Here is a twist on Cinderella. It is called Prince Cinders.

Story Time From Home – Monday 8th June

Hello everyone,

I hope that you had a nice weekend.

Here is the result from the Story Time From Home vote. There were 48 replies and as you can see it was very close.

I am delighted to say that the winning theme was cats and as many of you know I have lots of super cat books (and 2 very naughty real cats!)  I am really looking forward to sharing some of these with you this week.  Today’s story does includes dogs and cats and is from a series of books that you might already know.

Good Morning, Friday 5th June

Friday again! I can’t believe how fast the time is going. I hope you have all had a lovely week. It’s a shame about the weather but i’m keeping my fingers crossed it will improved over the weekend.

Here are the answers to the Fairy tale houses. Did you guess them correctly?

Have you made one of your own?

This weekend my boys and I are going to watch a Disney movie on Disney plus. There is so much choice though, so it might take us a while to decide. Do any of you have Disney plus?

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Take care and stay safe. Missing you and so proud of you all!

Mrs Chisholm

Happy Friday- 5.6.2020

It is Friday again.

I was in school yesterday and all the bright rainbows made me smile. They are all so different and so colourful. It was strange being there when it is so quiet. It made me realise how long it has been since I have seen you all and how much I miss everything about school life, mainly all your smiles, stories and cuddles.

I hope that you have a lovely weekend, fingers crossed the sun shines on us. I thought that I would leave you with an update on my kitten that joined our family just before all this happened. He keeps us all busy and makes us laugh everyday. He doesn’t like sleeping but he does like adventures in the garden. This week he has learned to copy our big cat Flynn and can jump up the fence. Flynn wasn’t very happy as this was his peaceful place. Ace is a bit of a monkey and is keeping us all on our toes.

Happy weekend everyone,

From Mrs Menmuir and Crazy Ace.

Good morning P1! Friday 6th June 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you have had a nice week and are looking forward to the weekend. Are you going to do anything nice?

I was talking to my godson the other day (he is nine years old and goes to school in Edinburgh) and he told me about a few science experiments he has done at home lately, so I asked him how to do his favourite one and here it is, for you to do at home if you want to, just for fun!

 Make your own lava lamp

You will need:

a glass

water

veg oil (or similar!)

salt

optional: food dye

Method

  1. Half fill your glass with water.
  2. Add a few drops of food dye if you like and swirl it in.
  3. Now add oil to the glass until it is about 3/4 full (ask an adult to show you what that looks like.)
  4. Take a tablespoon of salt and drop it in all at once. Can you see anything happening?

What happens is that the salt is heavier than the water, so when you pour salt on the oil, it sinks to the bottom of the mixture, carrying a blob of oil with it. In the water, the salt starts to dissolve. As it dissolves, the salt releases the oil, which floats back up to the top of the water. This creates an effect a bit like a lava lamp!

I hope you enjoy exploring this science activity if you choose to try it.

Have a great weekend when it comes,

Take care,

Mrs Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 4th June 2020

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are enjoying your week. What have been the highlights for you?

As you all know, things are a bit different just now and you have all been doing such a great job of managing to stay safe and positive.

You might still find that there are times when you feel anxious or sad though, and this is totally normal. Everybody feels these feelings sometimes, and it is a good idea to explore ways to help you to feel a bit better when you feel like this.

My mum and dad used to say that a problem shared is a problem halved, which means that it is a good idea to share your worries with a grown up you trust because they might be able to help you feel better.

Some people like a cuddle when they feel sad. Other people like to get outdoors and go for a walk. Maybe you could talk to an adult about what kind of things they do to make themselves feel better when they are worried or upset?

When I feel worried or upset or cross, I find it very helpful to take a little bit of time to practise something called mindfulness. Mindfulness is about paying full attention to something and slowing down to really notice what you’re doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing. When you’re mindful, you’re taking your time to focus in a relaxed way.

Sometimes in class, we follow the instructions in this Melting video and we focus on our bodies and going from being tense to being relaxed. Perhaps you could try it at home:

I hope you have a wee conversation at home about different things you can do to help if you ever feel worried or upset. Remember that it is okay and normal to feel these things sometimes, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Tell someone you trust how you are feeling and let them help you.

We miss you all so much and can’t wait to see you again!

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Good morning Primary 1, Thursday 4th 2020

Good Morning Primary 1, I hope you are all well and have had a good week so far.

Although the sunshine has taken a little break from shining, it doesn’t mean we can’t keep moving and stay active. What things do you like to do each day to keep your body moving? Are you still going on a daily walk? There a re so many beautiful places to walk in Linlithgow, I’d love to know where your favourite place to walk are.

Are you a healthy challenger?

I have put together a challenge grid of different activities for you to do.  There is a mixture of different things for you to try. Keep a little record of the challenges and tick them off as you go and if you can, take photos or videos and share them with us. When you complete activities you can colour the challenge log or make your own way to record what you have done. (Please remember that you don’t need to print the sheets off. Have fun making your own log sheet.)

How are you getting on with eating a rainbow? We’d love to hear or see what you have been trying.

Fairy tales

I’ve put together a little guessing game. How well do you know your fairy tales?

Welcome to Fairy tale Way. Can you guess who lives in each house?

Have a look at the clues on each house to help you guess. I will let you know on Friday morning who lives in the house and see how many you guessed correctly. (This might remind some adults of Through the keyhole “Who lives in a house like this?”)

Can you create your own Fairy tale way. What would the different characters houses look like? Maybe you could get someone to guess who lives in each house. You could even send it to us to guess.

Have a lovely day primary one. Please keep in touch and send an email or comment if you have any questions.

Take care.

Good Afternoon! 3.6.2020

I thought I would ask you to be creative this afternoon. In Primary 1 we love to draw and explore artists. This time I thought that you could listen to the story about a little girl who doesn’t think that she is good at drawing. She then creates the dot.

Listen to the story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5mGeR4AQdM

Now see if you can create a dot picture. There is so much that you can do with it. Here are some ideas:

There is a famous artist that we looked at before in Primary 1 that uses lots of dots- can you remember who he is? If not, see if you can find him online. We would love to see your art work so please send us photographs.

Have a lovely afternoon.

Good morning P1! Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are having a lovely week so far. I have seen a lovely competition being advertised just now that I thought you might enjoy taking part in.

You could win a £10 National Book Token for each of your classmates – and surprise them all when schools reopen!

Create a fabulous National Book Token design while you are learning from home; whether it’s our school crest doodled in ink, a pencil drawing of the entire class, or something completely different, they will be choosing one child’s design to put on a National Book Tokens gift card every week for seven weeks.

When schools open up again, the winners and their classmates will each receive a £10 National Book Token – with the winning artwork on it – to inspire you to choose your next favourite book to read.

Follow this link https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/create-a-national-book-token-for-your-class for details on how to enter. Good luck!

This competition got me thinking about reading and why I love it so much. Do you enjoy reading and being read to? What do you like most about it? What type of books do you like best? Do you have a favourite book? Maybe you could find out what everyone in your household likes about reading or what their favourite books are.

These are my favourite books:

You might have heard of some of them. I LOVE reading because you have to use your imagination and you can learn about different people, places and times. Reading can make you feel like you are somewhere totally magical and out of this world! You also learn a lot from reading stories because you have a chance to think about things from other points of view. Reading is also a great way to become a good writer, so there are lots of good reasons to keep reading.

I hope you take some time to think about your favourite books this week and to remind yourself how fun and amazing reading and being read to can be! Good luck if you decide to enter the competition – you are all so creative, we would love to see any designs you create.

Take care everyone and have a really lovely day,

Your P1 Teachers
