Busy Little Elves in P3

Last week in Maths we were learning all about symmetry.  We used mirrors to check if a shape was symmetrical and how many lines of symmetry it had.  We discovered that not all shapes are symmetrical and that is called asymmetric.

In Literacy, we were learning about common and proper nouns.  We learned that a proper noun is a little bit fancy and needs a capital letter.  Words such as months of the year, names, places and days of the week are all proper nouns.

We are starting to feel a little festive, so in Art we were given a challenge by our class elf to create a Christmas tree using forks, paint, glitter and paper plates.

We have also been exercising our vocal chords and have been practising our Christmas carols in preparation for the Christmas carol concert next week.  We have also been pract

ising our dance moves for our Christmas party and have been learning The Square Dance, The Grand Old Duke of York and The Flying Scotsman.

What a busy week we had!

We hope that our class elves leave us some more fun challenges to do this week!

Library adventure

Primary 3 were very lucky to have a visit over to Broxburn library to listen to an Egyptian story read by Dianne the librarian.  However, Dianne was in character when we popped over and was dressed as a pharaoh!  She read us a story about Charlie Stinky Socks who was searching for gold in the desert.  He came across different Egyptian things on his travels.  Dianne let us borrow some books to learn even more about Ancient Egypt.  So far we have learned:

Matthew – Ancient Egyptians used a tool called a shaduf to bring water out from the River Nile.

Niamh/Tavia – Pharaoh is what we call their kings and it means house/palace.

Santiago – The most popular drink in Ancient Egyptian times was beer!

Grady – There are wooden boats called ‘felucca’s’ that travel along the Nile.

Zofia – Only boys who had a lot of money got to go to school.

We have loved learning about Ancient Egypt so far and can’t wait to learn more!

Exciting mail

Primary 3 were intrigued when Mrs McGuire asked if she could have a word with them this afternoon. She had received a letter from the National Museum of Scotland saying that they had had a leak and some of their Egyptian artefacts had been damaged.  They were asking if she knew of any children who would be up to the job in helping them out.

Primary 3 were very excited when they realised that she that thought that they were up to the job and they were happy to accept the challenge!

Primary 3 breathe easy!

As part of our Health and Wellbeing, Primary 3 have been learning about different strategies that we can use to help us deal with our worries.  We were very lucky to have a visit from Ellie’s Auntie Trish who is a mindfulness instructor. She showed us how to breathe properly and gave us a couple of strategies to use when we are feeling particularly worried about something. We know that there are lots of people we can talk to and that a problem shared is a problem halved!

Maths outdoors for Primary 3

Primary 3 were keen to take advantage of the sunny weather and take their maths learning outdoors!  We have been learning to add and subtract 2 digit numbers using different strategies.  These include empty number lines and using the 100 square to find the correct path.  Outside, we were chalking empty number lines on the path, we were making 100 squares and we were using string to make empty number lines for us to jump through.  By doing this, we got some fresh air and sunshine whilst learning! Here are some photographs of us in action.

Super science!

Primary 3 have been enjoying learning about ‘Freezing and Melting’ and the changing state of water. We had a great time trying to find the quickest method to melt an ice cube, although our hands got a bit chilly and wet! We tried blowing on it, rubbing it in our hands and trying to break it up with a pencil.  We found that putting it by the heater and running it under warm water melted the ice cube the fastest. We then used magnifying glasses to look really closely at ice and saw lots of shapes and bubbles inside.

Fantastic Mr Fox!

We’re all just back from a fantastic afternoon, watching a travelling theatre company perform ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’.  In celebration of one of our children’s favourite authors, Roald Dahl, all our boys and girls from Nursery to P7, watched the production.  At St Nicholas Primary, we love Roald Dahl because there are always morals in his stories and great characterisation, making them suitable for young and old.

Welcome to P3!

Primaries 3 and 3/2 have been settling into our new area in the School.

We have been learning about Class Dojo this week which is going to be our new reward system. We each chose our own Dojo character and are ready to start using it properly next week!

Our Teachers think we are going to be fantastic workers in Primary 3 and we will earn lots of Dojo points!!

Sporting June

Yesterday Primary 3 visited Broxburn Academy to take part in a Highland Games festival with other primary 3 children from the local schools.    We were all split into groups and the older children from the secondary school were our group leaders and they took us round all of the fun activities.

My favourite part was doing the speed bounce. Charlee-Marie

I really enjoyed the potato and spoon race. Fraser

I liked throwing hoops over the highland cow. Jack J

Today, Miss Watson kindly allowed us to look at and try on her friend’s Staff Commonwealth uniform.  We know to look out for the colours red, grey and white and there is a Scotland flag on the back.  Ethan, Karolina and Daniel had the pleasure of trying them on and we all agreed that they felt very light and comfortable.

A day in the life of an Aussie.

You have the right to have a name and a nationality.

Primaries 3 and 3/2 were so lucky this morning to get a visit from Hannah in Primary 5.  She lived in Australia for 3 years and she recently returned back to Scotland.  Hannah found out that we have been learning about the country Australia as part of our topic work and she volunteered to come into our class to talk to us all about this wonderful country.  She showed us a powerpoint, brought in artefacts like a boomerang, clap sticks, flag, her netball trophy and her school uniform.  She told us so many interesting facts and showed us some pictures of a typical day in the life of an Aussie!

Thank you so much Hannah for sharing this with us.  We thoroughly enjoyed your presentation!

Fantastic Gymnastics!

Primaries 3 and 3/2 enjoyed a taster session of gymnastics on Friday morning.  There were lots of fun activities set up in the hall for us to try out.  We enjoyed doing forward and backward rolls, pencil rolls, running and jumping on the spring board, balancing and bunny hops.

Ollie liked jumping from side to side on the bench and found it quite easy.

Imogen enjoyed running and jumping high off the spring board.  She said it was great fun.

Hana liked doing forward rolls and said that she is good at it.

Ben thought he was good at balancing on the wooden beam and used his hands to help him balance.

Miss Crease and Miss Woods have been overwhelmed by the outstanding quality of our amazing Australian research.  We were given a homework challenge to find out more about the country.  Some of us created posters, leaflets, information books and powerpoints.  We enjoyed working with our families to create them and even our mum’s and dad’s learned new things too!

We looked at Australian wildlife, artefacts, the six states, people and landmarks.

Here are some examples below:

Healthy & Happy Hearts

Primary 3 have been really lucky to be part of the Healthy Hearts programme led by James Pegg and George Scott.  Over the last 5 weeks we have learned about happy minds, importance of water, food groups, physical activity and dental hygiene.  Each week George showed us a presentation on the Smartboard, then at The Strathbrock Partnership Centre, James linked physical activities to our learning.  We always worked in teams and the important message was to encourage each other.

Sadly, this was our final week and we were all awarded with a medal and a brand new toothbrush for us to use at home.

It all started with the Big Bang!

Yesterday primaries 3 and 3/2 visited Dynamic Earth and had a wonderful time.  Firstly we went on a tour and explored different rocks and then we embarked on a journey through time inside a time machine.  We watched a video of a volcano erupting and the ground that we were standing on began to shake.  Some of us got a fright!  We also saw an iceberg and watched video clips of frightening avalanches.  We went into a room that looked like a cinema and had to wear 3D glasses.  We watched a film of a helicopter ride taking us through different biomes and wearing the glasses made us feel like we were actually on the ride!  It looked like we could touch some of the animals.

We then had a dinosaur detective workshop where we were allowed to look at and touch different fossils and discuss which dinosaur they belonged too.  Some of us had the chance to become paleontologists where we used brushes to discover a dinosaur fossil buried in the sand.  The whole experience was enjoyed by all of the pupils and adults.

A special thank you to all of our adult helpers who kept us safe on our trip.

My favourite part of the trip was when we travelled on the 3D helicopter.  I got a huge fright when the scorpion attacked! Jack J

I enjoyed looking at and touching the iceberg.  I put my fingers in the holes on the ice and it was freezing cold. Daniel

My favourite part was at the start of the tour and we got to look at ancient rocks.  I touched the oldest rock in Scotland. Karolina

Fantastic Friendship Assembly

Article 31

We have a right to relax and play with our friends.

On Friday Primaries 3 and 3/2, after many rehearsals and lots of hard work, showcased their assembly on the theme of Friendship.  Every child in each class had an important part to play and we all worked collaboratively to produce a fantastic show!

We were nervous before the assembly but in the end we all really enjoyed it. –   Leo

The assembly was fantastic and my favourite part was when Anna jumped out of the cauldron.  – Ethan

I was proud of myself for saying the rap all on my own! – Elise D

The message in our assembly was to be kind, caring and loving towards your friends and to make sure that everyone always feels included. – Shaelyn

Our teachers were very proud of us and said that we were all very confident individuals on the stage.

The video of our assembly will follow shortly….

Terrific Tuesday!

Article 15

You have the right to be with friends and join or set up clubs, unless this breaks the rights of others

Well we certainly have had a very busy day!  P3 and P3/2 thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a Judo taster session in the school hall.  We did different Judo moves and took part in fun games with a partner.  We even got to wear special Judo jackets.

Later in the morning, all of the P3 children began their series of ‘Healthy Hearts’ activities with James Pegg and George Scott.  George told us all about how to keep healthy and how important our physical and emotional wellbeing is.  We then went over to the hall in The Strathbrock Partnership Centre where we did lots of active games.  The main message that we learned from today is that we should all ENCOURAGE each other.

Friendship Fun!

As part of our assembly preparation we made friendship necklaces in class. We used food colouring to dye pasta tubes to make it nice and colourful and left it to dry overnight. Then the next day, we put the pasta tubes through the string to make vibrant necklaces for a friend in our class. We have been talking about the importance of friendship and have discussed the qualities a true friend should have.

Our ‘Friendship’ assembly is on Friday 16th May and we look forward to showcasing all of our work!

P3 and P3/2 go wild!

We began our literacy work by discussing the difference between fact and opinion and sorted statements into these categories.

Our teachers put us into working groups to research a Scottish wildlife animal.  Our task was to find out about their habitat, diet, social grouping, babies and talents. Primaries 5 and 7 were very kind to allow us to use their netbooks to carry out this research.

We used a notebook to record all the facts that we were learning and used these notes to create colourful and informative posters displayed that we have learned.  Today we are going to present our findings to our classmates.

Elise D learned that adders have big sharp teeth.

Sophie K learned that foxes like to eat small animals and sometimes even eggs.

Cole enjoyed recording notes using the netbooks.

Sterling enjoyed making a colourful poster.

Zumba-mania

Primaries 3 and 3/2 put on their fitness gear and took part in the Zumbathon for our Lenten appeal.  Hollie C particularly enjoyed the Battlestar game and Cole enjoyed displaying his moves in the Zumba circle.  Ollie liked the warm up activities as it was helping to get his body ready for the fun exercises.

Nina was a great instructor and made Zumba look effortless and fun!  Here are some photos of us in action.

Recycle it!

As part of our Eco tasks, primaries 3 and 3/2 are responsible for emptying and recycling the plastic bottles and cans from the recycle bank in the dinner hall.  We counted a whopping 287 bottles and 6 cans.  Unfortunately, some people have been using the recycle bank as a rubbish bin and we found old sandwiches, pieces of fruit and even a pencil.  This made this a yukky job as the bin was really smelly!  Thankfully Jordan, our janitor, has kindly offered to clean the bins for us.  So we would like to ask that you only put empty plastic bottles and cans into the recycle bin.

Thank you!

Lots of characters in P3 & P3/2! World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day, we have all been given the opportunity to come to school dressed as our favourite character from a book that we have enjoyed reading.  Some of us decided to dress up as character’s from the Roald Dahl novels that our teachers have been reading to us in class.  We are going to be involved in some exciting literacy activities to celebrate this special day.

Shrove Tuesday

Yesterday P3 & P3/2 celebrated Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, by preparing and tasting pancakes.  We reflected on the meaning of this special day and know that it is the day before the start of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday.  During Lent we try to do without things and give up things we like.  Here are some photos of us tasting the delicious pancakes in class!

Marvellous Multiplication!

Primaries 3 and 3/2 are busy learning all about the 2 and 5 times tables.  We have been involved in active games and we have made multiplication posters to help us remember the number facts.  Miss Crease even made up a song to help us remember the multiples! We have also been using ICT to help us develop our knowledge of these tables by playing Number Gym and Table mountain on the Smart board and laptops.  Our teachers have asked us to keep practising the tables using our green jotters each night as part of our homework.  It is important to have a quick and accurate recall of these table facts.

Chariot Challenge

Miss Crease and Miss Woods were extremely impressed by the hard work and effort that went into our homework challenge.  We used lots of household recycled materials to create Roman chariots as part of our class topic.  We enjoyed explaining to our classmates how we made them.  Finlay even made a Circus Maximus!

Owen’s grandad kindly provided a Roman soldier’s outfit to show the class.  Owen felt like a real gladiator!

Thank you to all family members for helping your children to create such amazing masterpieces!  We will be showcasing these to P4 on Friday morning.

P3 & P3/2 Class Mass – Ash Wednesday

Just a little reminder that P3 & P3/2 will be leading our Ash Wednesday Mass on 5th March at 11 am in our school hall.  If your child has been given a reading/prayer, please ensure they are practising this every night to ensure they are reading it fluently.  These are stapled into their homework diaries.

Children must come to school wearing full school uniform – white school shirt and tie – on this day.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Miss Crease and Miss Woods
