Leeks and tomatoes and kale…oh my!

It’s been a busy time for P6 recently. We needed time to get over the excitement of World Book Day where we were visited by Katniss Everdeen, President Snow, Effie Trinket, Ceaser Flickerman, Prim Everdeen, Ginny Weasly, Hermione Granger, Gangsta Granny, Just William, Greg Heffly, Joanna Mason, William Beech and many more just in our own class.

We have been lucky enough to play cricket for the last few Fridays and we have been learning all the skills we will need for the cricket festival at Livingston Cricket Club next Friday. Katie says “We were all active at the cricket and we are enjoying it.”

Obviously WWII still continues here in p6 and in case of gas attacks we made sure that we were prepared by making our very own gas masks. We had to use careful template and cutting skills and then we had to work out a way to attach the filter to the main mask using technology skills, not as easy as it sounds! We are all prepared now to ‘KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!’.

Using our maths skills in area, measure and perimeter, we have also been making sure that we will have enough to eat and even extra to add to our rations. We are following Government Advice to ‘DIG FOR VICTORY’. Our Victory Garden challenge was to find as much space in our gardens for growing vegetables as possible while keeping space for our Anderson Shelter, rabbit hutches, chicken coops, compost heap, fruit trees and a greenhouse! However, that wasn’t all. We were given another challenge to sow vegetables and make sure we have something to harvest every month of the year. Amongst other things we decided on leeks, onions, kale and tomatoes.

HOWZAT!

P6 completed their second week of cricket training this week.  We have been learning pick up and hold the bat correctly, how to throw the ball, how to bat and catch the ball properly.  Next week we will be learning how to bowl.  In our first week we also played a game called French cricket.

“At first I thought it would be very hard but it turned out to be very easy and fun.”  Katie

“I like our coach, Ian because he teaches well and never makes anything complicated.” Sean B

“I like cricket because it is interesting and fun to play.” Kylie

We have also had some different teachers this week, Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Stewart.  It was different having them to teach us but it was interesting, fun and enjoyable.  We hope they enjoyed spending time in P6 with us too!

Today is the start of Fair-trade Fortnight so we are encouraging everyone to “GO BANANAS!”  In fact, bananas were very rare during WWII as we have been finding out.  We have been in groups and working independently on different rationing challenges including research about shopping for food during rationing, clothes rationing look books, rationing recipes and menus, Potato Pete and Dr Carrot (see our WWII wall soon to find out more about them!) and public information leaflets about rationing.

“At first when I heard we had to present out research in a PowerPoint, I thought it would tricky but it turned out to be easy.” Declan

“I enjoyed working with my group because it was really fun.” Abby

WWII RATIONING…

did you know?

  • Fruit, vegetable, milk and bread were not rationed
  • People were only allowed one fresh egg a week
  • Rationing continued until after the war
  • Sweets, butter, sugar, meat, cheese, tea, eggs, jam were some of the things rationed
  • People were allowed 48 clothing coupons for a year
  • Foods like burgers and pizza were not yet invented
  • People grew vegetable in gardens and on top of their Anderson Shelters to supplement their rations

TOBACCO TRUTHS!

Nicotene Nicki showing us some of the negative effects of smoking.

P6 have had visits from the Tobacco Education Team.  We wanted to share some of the shocking and frightening things we have been learning about smoking and cigarettes.

  • Cigarettes have between 4000 and 5000 chemicals in them.
  • If you smoke, your lungs eventually turn black.
  • When you smoke, the air sacks in your lungs fill up with tar.
  • When you smoke, your fingers turn yellow.
  • If you smoke, other people in your house breathe in the smoke which is called ‘second hand smoke’.
  • Tobacco companies try lots of things to get young people interested in smoking like designing packets that are like gadgets and with cigarettes that have a nice taste to start with.
  • Smoking can cause lots of different cancers.
  • If you smoke it negatively affects every part of your body.
  • Smoking can cause blindness.
  • The chemicals in cigarettes are things that are also found in bleach, batteries, nail varnish remover, gases (!)

'The Smoke Machine'

This week we will be discussing the effects of second hand smoke.  This is very topical as smoking in cars with children in them is being discussed in Parliament this week.
