Health Wellness in P4!

What a fantastic week we had! Loads of special activities – for example, a fantastic assembly introducing our ‘This is Me’ focus led by Miss Nicholson, an amazing activities afternoon, some potentially life saving first aid training by the First Responders, our daily Run a Mile, and our week long focus on the wellbeing indicators! Here are pictures from some of these activities:

Sustainability homework

Primary 4 were given the homework challenge of researching a type of renewable energy. They then had to create a model of their chosen type of energy, and a poster explaining how it works.

Everyone in primary 4 rose to the challenge and worked really hard on their project – we had some incredible and inventive wind turbines, solar panels and water wheels. In class the pupils then got the opportunity to share their models in front of the class, as well as with partners and with primary 4/3. The pupils had to evaluate and reflect on what they had done well and could have done better. They also got the chance to look at and give feedback to their peers. The rest of the school are now getting the opportunity to see the models, as they are being displayed in the corridor outside our classroom! I’m so proud and impressed with your models and posters, well done!

Block 5 Topic Discussion!

P4 and P4/3 got together to discuss our new topic, what we think we need to learn, and what we already know! See below for our ideas:

I can consider ways of looking after my school or community and can encourage others to care for their environment

  • Teaching children how to behave more safely
  • Encourage people
  • Stop plastic/air pollution
  • Talk to people
  • Encourage people to look after the environment
  • Make people feel proud of themselves
  • Recycle plastic
  • Stand up for yourself
  • Respect people
  • Make sure people are more careful when they recycle
  • Respect one and other
  • Do not litter
  • Be nice
  • Be eco friendly
  • When you cut something down, re plant it

I can contribute to a discussion of the difference between my needs and wants and those of others around me

  • Difference between needs and wants
  • Be helpful
  • Help people when they get hurt
  • Be kind
  • Confused between difference between needs and wants sometimes
  • Do thing for others not yourself
  • Put other people before yourself
  • Need=something you need
  • Want =something not needed
  • Something people need a ramp but others don’t
  • When you want something
  • Some people want an xbox some people don’t

Representing my class, school and/or wider community encourages my self worth and confidence and allows me to contribute to and participate in society

  • Confidence is that you can do things
  • Confidence is the same thing as stamina
  • Lists of Peebles clubs
  • Never give up
  • Doing a good deed every day
  • Doing things for others
  • What can we do to help others?
  • Give money or food
  • Deeds

Through contributing my views, time and talents I play a part in bringing about positive change in my school and wider community

  • How can we help our community?
  • Think of different things to help the school
  • Making everyone feel safe
  • Teaching people to be more confident in their skills
  • Think about ways we can make Peebles a better place
  • I want to make the world a better place
  • Do not litter
  • I want to make this town more eco friendly
  • I can make a difference
  • Make school a better place by picking up litter
  • We can help the school – plastic, in the car park

I have experienced the different jobs involved in running a business enterprise and understand the role each one plays in its success

  • Business=job
  • Job is a business that helps you get money
  • Running a business gives you mega bucks
  • Being a good boss
  • Go to school so you can get a job when you’re older
  • Start a bank
  • Make money
  • Start a group
  • Set up a business
  • Suggestions of business ideas
  • I have experienced this because I am opening a charity

I have developed an understanding of the importance of local organisations in providing for the needs of my local community

  • UK cancer centre
  • People in wheelchairs need ramps to get to houses
  • Disabled toilets are for people that are disabled
  • Go and visit places in Peebles so we can help them one day
  • Help people with their plastic waste
  • Lists of organisations in Peebles that help the community

Sustainability and renewable energy

This block we are learning about Energy! We have been thinking about different types of energy, fossil fuels, and renewable energies.

Mr Gray came to talk to us about sustainability and renewable energies – he used to be involved in the design and construction of wind farms and hydro stations. We learnt lots about why these natural sources of energy are so important, and how they work. He even brought in some amazing models to demonstrate how wind and water can be used to produce energy!

Scots poetry

Wow! What fantastic poetry performances in P4, well done to all the girls and boys for learning and reciting their Scots poems in front of the class. Well done to Alfie C for coming runner-up in our class Burns competition,  and Charlie for winning! Charlie is also going to be representing Kingsland and P4 at the Star O’ Rabbie Burns (Callants) competition. Good luck Charlie.

We have been really inspired and have been writing our own poetry in class, and have even had a try at writing in Scots! The girls and boys have written some lovely descriptive Scots poems. Well done!

Christmas Around the World!

P4 are learning about how countries around the world celebrate Christmas. We have learnt that they all have different traditions and cultures!

Today we learnt about how they celebrate Christmas in Germany, as one of our pupils is part German. His mum came in to tell us about the traditions they had when she lived in Germany, and how she has mix of German and British Christmas traditions now they live in Scotland. Some big differences we heard about are that they celebrate Christmas day on 24th December, they have lit candles on their tree, and they have meat fondue as Christmas dinner!

Thanks you Mrs Bennett for coming to talk to us and sharing the amazing traditions from your childhood!
