The Tallest Class in Banton Primary
The Biggies went down to the woods this morning.
It is beginning to get a little more spring like, we noticed daffodils, hawthorn leaves and hazel catkins and buds.
We saw a buzzard hunting and heard and then saw a Woodpecker high in a tree.
We collected some nouns, verbs and adjective for later use and we also picked quite a lot of material for our bee hotel.
Today we went to Dow’s woods with the wee ones. We were all looking for signs of autumn. The biggies and the wee ones were partners. This is how our trip went …
Signs of autumn
When we were walking with our wee partners we were looking out for signs of autumn some of the sings we found were hazelnuts that had fallen of of a tree, brambles, rowan berries, and changing leaves some of these things we collected. Also the biggies were looking out for trip hazards and eye hazards while we were walking with our wee buddies.
When we arrived to our spot
When we arrived to out usual spot in the woods we looked for more signs after that our wee buddies had to leave. Once they left we decided to draw a tree we each picked a tree to draw. We have to remember which tree we drew because we are going to go back and draw it in different seasons. When we were finished drawing we wrote some poems about our trees.
Games and chaos
When we finished drawing and writing we played some games the games we played were sardines. Which is where a couple of people hide and if you find a person you have to hide with them until eventually everyone is found. When I found someone they were lying down on the mud hiding so then I had to join them until their was three of us thankfully time was up. Then after that we ran all the way back to school.
I really enjoyed the wood especially getting to show the wee ones the wood since some of them have never seen it. I hope we do this again some time.
We have had a really busy week the first week back. The class are really working hard in their maths and literacy.
The Robots project is going well.

The Primary Sevens had 2 challenges from Kilsyth Academy, we decided it would be a good idea for the sixes to join in. The first challenge involved designing a boat:
The second was to design a setting for Tunnock’s teacakes:
The biggies have great imagination & design skills. The creature image is Alice’s she turned her Teacake upside down to make a campfire!
Yesterday we went to Dow’s Wood with Mr & Mrs Carter. We found many signs of autumn, seeds, plants and signs of wildlife.

On Wednesday Afternoon the Biggies went on a walk down to Dow’s Wood with Mr and Mrs. Carter. The focus was on trees, but we kept ours eyes and ears open to other experiences.
Last Wednesday the biggies went a walk down dows woods. It was quite a nice day. We saw lots of different things. On the way To the woods we saw ash trees with helicopters people were throwing them about. We then got down to the start of the woods there was loads of squishy mud. It was quite dark at some points because of all the trees were above us
We walked down a bit further there was some fire weed I got a picture of a bee on one of them. As we were walking people were picking up brambles and leaves. We found a rainbow leaf. Whatever group got the most leaves got group points. We then saw 2 butterflies they were a red admiral and a peacock. Mr Johnston got a really good photo of them.
We then had to turn back because we didn’t know how long it would take and we didn’t have much time left. On the grass we found a road it was so small. We then kept going and we eventually got back to the start and we went back to the school and saw the things we collected. We looked at the pictures we took some of them were really nice. We had had a great walk and then we had to get lunch.
Last Wednesday we went down to Andrew Dows wood to see the different things about spring there were loads of animals and nature. Mr and Mrs Carter took us because they knew a lot more than we know about nature and animals. There was much to learn, about loads of parts in the woods. We learned about some birds and we heard more than we saw.
Emma
The insects we saw, there were butterflies. One species was orange tip. the difference between then are the males have the little bronze bit at the tip of their wings and the females have a light green bit under their wings. We saw dancing midges that do not bite but other midges will bite. We saw bees getting pollen.
Aaliyah
We saw yellow gorse bush and it smelled like coconuts.
We also saw bluebells and butter cups and a king cup which is bigger than a butter cup and grows in the marsh.
We also saw violets and lots of lovely beeees!!!!!!
Collecting pollen and nectar. We saw cherry blossom.
We saw a tree that was giant it was in school woods. We got three people to stand around the tree and link arms and measure how long our arms together would be together and it came to about 5 meters. We then put our arm 45 degrees until it looked like we touched the top of the tree then we took about meter steps and how many steps we took it would be the height of the tree and we got 25 so the tree is about 25 meters high. It grows 2 cm a year. The trees we saw were beech trees, birch trees, Rowen trees , hawthorn trees and blossoming trees.
Zara & Islay
We heard loads of birds even some from Africa like the blackcap and chiffchaff. The reason why the blackcap is called this name is because it has Markings on its face like a blackcap on your head and it is the same with the chiffchaff it is called the chiffchaff because they make a noise that says chiffchaff. There was also a buzzard flying over the area scanning it for prey to eat. We also heard a great tit saying teacher.
