Bizarre Banton Beasties

If you go down to Dow’s wood or look around the Banton playground you may get a big surprise.

The Biggies have been faking news. We read the Pacfic Tree octopus site and we were inspired.

You need to look very carefully at the ‘evidence’ some creatures are good at hiding.

Outdoor learning Day, pt 1: Dow’s Wood

The Biggies went down to the woods this morning.

It is beginning to get a little more spring like, we noticed daffodils, hawthorn leaves and hazel catkins and buds.

We saw a buzzard hunting and heard and then saw a Woodpecker high in a tree.

We collected some nouns, verbs and adjective for later use and we also picked quite a lot of material for our bee hotel.

The Bee Hotel Food Court

Today some of the class started working on our raised flower beds that will be planted with wildflowers for the occupants of our, yet to be built, bee hotel.

The Class did a great job with hardly any paint on clothes. They also wrote some notes for their e-portfolio, I’ve put some of these below.

This term we have been learning about bees so the Kilsyth rotary club reached out and they had a big chat with us about bees and gave us information about what bees like. Tthey wanted to make a bee hotel with us and we are also making some wild flower planters and the look amazing.

We are going to “bee” building a bee hotel, but it can also be for other bugs and flies an wasps.

We are getting help for the bee hotel from the Kilsyth Rotary Club. For this We need items with many holes in them like bricks, leaves, straw/grass, sticks, wood, slates, lots of wood, logs, moss and lots of other natural objects and un-natural objects to.

The next time they came they talked to us about what flowers would be suitable to plant they said that our Bee hotel would be for other small creatures. Like moths and flys and unfortunately wasps. When they left they gave us something called collars. Not a dog collars they were big wooden planks the opened up into a square shape.

So today we got these six wood planks and they bend and turn into a squares, and we got six of them, we painted them with white primer paint. So our teacher told two students to get one plank outside, and he showed us how to paint it carefully.

Once we’ve done that we will fill it with soil and wild flower seeds. Soon we will be making the bee hotel but we need to get sticks, stones,log extra. We will use that to make the hotel. People will be bringing stuff in for the hotel suck as bricks with holes, bamboo and other stuff. Once it’s done we will look at it and leave.

The next step is for the collars to dry then put designs on them then let them dry and get varnished dried yet again and then be made into raised beds for wild flowers to a-tracked bees and not that welcome but wasps next we will build the actual hotel which may “bee” a challenge but we can manage it I’m sure because I’m “bee-ing” positive.

We still need to get some things for the bee hotel like tomorrow we are going to go to the woods and collect some stuff for the bee hotel like sticks and other things. We haven’t started to build the bee hotel yet but the bee people will be coming back after the Easter holidays to build the bee hotel with us. Some people will be bringing some stuff in like bamboo and bricks with holes in it.

We have been sent out to our homes and soon other places to collect items and other materials that bees and insects can fit through, for example a brick (the brick would have to possess holes within itself to be accepted and put into use.)

In the afternoon the class did a bit of design work and started transferring their designs to the pained collars.

Arcade Adventures

The biggies have has a few sessions making games for their Kitronix Arcades using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. Today I asked them to make a few notes about what they learnt and the mistakes they made. Making mistake is an important part of coding.

Here are some of the note the class made made:

Today in primary 6/7 our class worked on our ICT skills using an online game marker called Microsoft Arcade.

We all did different things, life, turkey day and save the forest. But I did shark attack!

For the first part of my game I had to make the shark move. To do that I had to put in pieces of code like, sprite position x = y, move sprite with buttons. One of the more important pieces of code that you needed for everything else to work was “on start”.

In Arcade we made lots of games by following specifically made instructions which was Fun, Hard and Challenging and I made mistakes along the way.
One mistake I made was I did not change one number to 115 but I changed it because I did realise so don’t worry it now works perfect now.

In my program I learned more about the logic section and about the if and else code.
In my program I was making a fly and a frog and if your fly overlaps the frog then you get If not you lose health and you have a timer when the timer end you win.

In my program l learned how to use more code. In it you will have to press button A and you will have to move the joy stick things to move you have to collect the baby turkey.

Today I learned how to make a talent show in arcade.
I added stars that came out when you pressed the a button, I added a message that tells you to press button a and added a sprite that is a bear singing.
I read through all the steps and completed 3 so that means I only need to do one more.
One mistake was that I added a different sprite instead of the one I needed to add, but I just changed it again and it worked!
This skill map was really easy and fun to make and I am enjoying making the code and putting it together.

I used my ICT skills when I was making a game from coding.
When I was making my game I used loops, sprites and location. I messed up and it started glitching my sprite and it would teleport. I fixed that and kept going it ended out being pretty good. When I made my mistake i fixed it by looking back over the instructions.

I learned how to debug some of my code when I made some mistakes . When you are playing it I also learned how to make my character jump and move about. When I was making my game when you fell I got the camera to follow the sprite. There was one mistake that I learned from that is that I put in the wrong variable and had to go over the entire code again until I found it.

What I am doing here is I am trying to get a turkey to save the other turkeys and get to the top of the scores. I have learned how to set a timer, to increase my score by 1, how to make a sprite move and how to add sprites. One mistake I made was that I forgot to set the winning screen at the top of the course, but I set it to the bottom so it said I had won at the start of the game.

We have been learning how to make code on a piece of software. This software has been showing us some tutorials on how to make some games with the codes we learn.

This is one of the games I did, I learned how to change my background of my game. I also learned how to change my sprite and create one by myself.

Another thing I learned was how to add text and how to make the text go on different position on my screen. One more thing I learned was how to make different parts of my screen do an affect like, confetti, fire, smiles and many more.

A mistake I made was I did not read the instructions properly and not understand what it said, so I went back and read it again slowly and I then understood what it said.

I have learned how to make a point System. When every You pick up an instrument You get a point but when You find a fan You loss a point.
I even made a way to win the game. By finding the exit door you win the game but if the timer hits zero you loss the game.
There is a start place too. You will start at a blue door. I’ve made controls to let you go up, right, down and left.
I made one mistake by not make the fans/ instrument disappear when pick up.

I have learned that coding has lots of categories to put into the code, like maths, controls, and much more. With coding, you can create sprites, and make your own websites, or even games. I use my ICT skills in coding. I made a mistake and I couldn’t figure out what it was, but it wouldn’t let the code run so I had to restart.

eco focus day

We had an eco focus day last week.

In preparation we did some litter picking on Thursday:

A small load of rubbish

On Friday we started thinking about What A Wonderful World we live in (cue song).

We joined in with the #showthelove tag organised by The Climate Coalition, and decorated some Green Hearts.

The then looked at the Lyrics of What a Wonderful World and used them to write some poems, here are a few:

Earth awaking
To wake up in the morning to see the sun awaking,
To see the grass left with a white covered layer,
To see the tree swaying with the tiniest of breeze,
To see the deer grazing at peace,
To hear the birds chirping happy to be alive,
To feel the earth awakening ready to thrive,
To not know what’s coming next in you life,
To see each animal all worked up inside,
Our earth has things we can’t believe but sometimes it’s the simplest thing that puts us at ease.

We then though about more practice things, how deal with rubbish in School and at home. Where our water comes from and how to stop it all being wasted.

Finally we made some green seed bomb hearts to share some flowers!

Respect

On Thursday Afternoon the biggies were working on the Shanari indicator Respect. We were thinking about Team Work, in particular how our problem solving and communication skills fit in.

The class were spilt into random groups and worked their way through several tasks. They did a great job, all scoring highly. Everyone could identify times they had listened and worked together.

We also had fun.
