Science Week🔬⚛️🎈

Room 6 have been busy getting our scientist caps on over the past week in celebration of British Science Week. We had fun exploring different science experiments relating to the topics of materials, forces and STEM.
On Wednesday, we were very lucky to have some STEM ambassadors visit our classroom. They taught us about properties and how we can use the sense of touch to work out different items from their texture. We participated in an experiment using ‘Mystery boxes’, where objects were put in a box and we had to use out hands to guess the item without looking. We were very good at this and our guesses were quite accurate.
On Thursday afternoon we looked at the topic of forces, concentrating on static electricity. We watched a video highlighting what static electricity is before completing an experiment using balloons. We used these to create static electricity by rubbing the balloon against our hair. We found that the electricity created made our hair stand up! We also tried to create this electricity by rubbing the balloon against our jumpers and sticking it to the wall but we weren’t as successful in this experiment. We learned that it is okay if some experiments don’t work out though because that is what science is all about.
On Friday we had another fun lesson focusing on a STEM challenge. This challenge involved two parts. The first was to create a maze using any materials we could find in the classroom that a ball could travel through. We worked well together using our imaginations to build many different successful mazes. We even built some with a variety of difficulty levels. When building the mazes, we all also got a shot of Brian the Beebot, where we had to use our direction knowledge and coding skills to get him from one point of the map to the other. We really enjoyed these tasks and have asked to do them again really soon!
Here are some comments about this week’s learning:

QJO, HG, IR – I 1 million % loved doing everything.

ND, RF – I really, really loved doing all of the science because I love science.
BrM – I loved doing everything.
IW – I absolutely loved doing the skittle experiment a few weeks ago.
HW – I really, really liked doing the skittles experiment because it was really satisfying to watch.
NG, SG – I loved using Brian the Beebot.
LT – I 100% liked doing the balloons experiment because it was funny when everyone’s hair flew up.
BlM – I liked doing the maze with my friends.
HH, RF – I liked building the maze with my friends.
OM – I loved doing the mazes.
