Scottish Island Success

In Room 6 we have really been enjoying our topic, ‘Katie Morag/Scottish Islands’. So far, we have discussed what we are interested in learning throughout the topic, as well as beginning to look at the different features of an island. As part of our lesson two weeks ago, we discussed what an island is and how this differs from a mainland. We spoke about how an island is much smaller and is surrounded by water. After further research and discussion, we were interested to learn that islands often have very few facilities and not many people usually live there. We were surprised to hear that often there is only one shop, one post office and one school, which is very different from the city of Glasgow! We also liked the fact that the most popular mode of transport around an island is often a ferry, whereas on the mainland there are many other ways to travel.

Following this learning, last week we focussed on learning about the job of the post office on the island. We read ‘Katie Morag Delivers the Mail’ and enjoyed chatting about the problems Katie faced during the story when she had to travel around the island delivering packages which she muddled up. After the story, we identified the role of a post office and listed all of the things you might find there. We also learned that on the island of Struay, there was only one building for both the shop and the post office.

This week, Room 6 have decided that we are going to build our own post office using the information we have learned from our topic work. We are very excited to get started on Thursday to create this and hope to be able to even write and deliver some mail using our very own post box.

We will post some pictures of this after we have finished our amazing work!

Have a lovely September break when it comes.
