Glasgow Schools’ Big Band & Special Guests Light Up the Old Fruitmarket
On Monday 23rd February, the iconic Old Fruitmarket once again played host to an unforgettable evening of live music as Glasgow Schools’ Big Band returned for their annual Big Band & Special Guests concert.
The atmosphere in the venue was electric from the very first note, as school bands from across the city took to the stage to showcase the depth of musical talent flourishing in Glasgow’s secondary schools.
The evening opened with performances from Shawlands Academy Soul Band, Rosshall Function Band, Bannerman Jazz Group, ’Rood Soul from Holyrood Secondary School, Hillpark Junior Rock Band and Ebenezer Groove from Hillhead High School. Each ensemble brought its own distinctive sound — from funk and soul grooves to rock anthems and jazz classics — highlighting the creativity, confidence and commitment of our young musicians.
Following the interval, Glasgow Schools’ Big Band delivered a dynamic and wide-ranging set that demonstrated both musical versatility and maturity. The programme moved seamlessly between classic big band repertoire and contemporary arrangements, featuring swing standards, modern jazz, pop-influenced works and powerful vocal performances.
Performing at the Old Fruitmarket is always a special experience for our young musicians. The scale of the venue, the professional sound and lighting, and the support of an enthusiastic audience create an inspiring platform that allows pupils to perform at their very best.
This concert remains a highlight of the CREATE calendar, celebrating not only musical excellence but also collaboration between schools, staff and the wider Glasgow community. Events like this demonstrate the impact of sustained music education across the city and the importance of providing young people with meaningful performance opportunities.
A huge congratulations to all pupils who performed, and sincere thanks to the staff, instrumental instructors, venue team and families who continue to support and champion music education in Glasgow.
We are already looking forward to next year.
