Instrumental Music Service

Glasgow CREATE Instrumental Music Service (IMS) aims to ensure equity of provision for all and provide sustainable, high quality, structured, progressive music lessons, enriching and enhancing education across Glasgow schools, with pathways leading to further education. Working with partners from across Scotland and beyond, we encourage children and young people to have high aspirations and to express their creativity, we nurture critical thinking and intellectual curiosity and foster life-long learning.

Glasgow CREATE IMS comprises 57 FTE Instrumental Music Instructors, including an Education Support Officer post, and provides music lessons on Strings, Wind, Brass, Percussion, Voice, Piano, Keyboard, Guitar & Bass, Harp, Pipes, Pipe Band Drumming, Tabla, Taiko Drumming, Aural Training and Music Theory across all Secondary Schools and a growing number of Primary schools to over 6,000 young people every week. Instrumental Music Instructors support the delivery of SQA music examinations, of which 50% is the total mark. Lessons are delivered free of charge and instruments are provided for loan where possible. Lessons are delivered across all age groups depending on the availability and suitability of instruments.

Instrumental Music Instructors also present young people for external exams including Trinity Rock School, Trinity and ABRSM and, in addition, young people are encouraged to enter local and national music festivals. Instructors deliver extra-curricular sessions within each school including bands, orchestras, choirs, technique classes, lunch time concerts. As well as assisting with school concerts and shows, they also facilitate trips to concerts, theatre performances, master classes and workshops, further enhancing learning experiences for young people.

Instrumental Music Instructors deliver Play Days and Master Classes on all instruments throughout the year in City Halls, CREATE’s Centre of Excellence for Music Performance. City groups and ensembles also take place in City Halls where young people can further enrich their musical journey. For more information on Glasgow’s City Music Groups click here
