Glasgow Schoolsโ€™ Big Band is a flagship city ensemble for young jazz musicians and vocalists. It brings together talented young people from across the city to perform jazz, funk, soul and swing music. Members rehearse weekly, develop advanced ensemble skills and perform at concerts and events throughout the year.

Who itโ€™s for

Big Band is for young musicians and vocalists who play or sing:

  • flute
  • clarinet
  • saxophones
  • trumpet or cornet
  • trombone
  • guitar
  • piano
  • bass, including upright and electric
  • drum kit
  • vocals

Entry is for young people working at Grade 4 and above, by audition.

What happens

Members rehearse weekly as part of an advanced jazz ensemble, developing ensemble skills and preparing for performances in styles including jazz, funk, soul and swing.

How progression works

Big Band is an auditioned city ensemble for young people who are ready for advanced jazz and commercial ensemble playing. Depending on their instrument, young people may also be interested in joining the Concert Band, the Symphonic Wind Band, and ultimately the Glasgow Schoolsโ€™ Symphony Orchestra.
