String Orchestras

Our string groups support young people at different stages of their musical journey, from beginner level onwards. They offer the chance to rehearse, perform and grow in confidence as part of a musical community.

The string pathway includes:

  • Intermezzo Strings (must have been playing for one year & Grade 1)
  • String Orchestra (Grade 2 – 3)
  • String Sinfonia (Grade 4 – 5)
  • String Ensemble (Grade 5+) teacher recommendation only

These groups form part of the wider progression route towards Glasgow Schools’ Symphony Orchestra.

Who it’s for

Our string groups are for young people who play:

  • violin
  • viola
  • cello
  • double bass

The pathway is open to string players from beginner level and above.

What happens

Pupils rehearse regularly as part of a string ensemble or orchestra. Through this, they can:

  • develop confidence in playing with others
  • build ensemble and listening skills
  • improve their musical understanding
  • prepare for performances and concerts

Each group offers a supportive next step in developing as a young string player.

Where and when

Venue: City Halls, 87 to 101 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1LH.

Rehearsal and concert dates: Saturdays – please see the calendar for dates.

How progression works

Progression through the string groups is not automatic. Each ensemble requires pupils to develop musical and ensemble skills. Tutors and conductors will support pupils when they are ready for the next step.
