Sushi for Afternoon Tea at Kirn Primary
Our Japan topic really came to life today as we went to the kitchens to make our own Sushi.
Sushi is a Japanese food made from sticky rice, which is rolled up in a seaweed sheet around vegetables or fish, then cut into short lengths. We also tasted some yellow and red Miso Soup, made from soya beans.

Halloween at Kirn!
Author Nicola Davies comes to Kirn Primary
Recently at Kirn Primary children in P4, P5 and P6 were treated to a fantastic morning with zoologist, author and BBC presenter Nicola Davies. Nicola told us about her work as a zoologist and drew us a picture of one of her favourite (but most weird) animal, the sperm whale. Then we all transformed into whales, and dived to the bottom of the ocean, holding our breath and clicking frantically to ‘see’ down there in the dark depths. We caught a giant squid and swam back up to the top of the ocean again to learn about whale skin, whale poo and whale tails. Continue reading Author Nicola Davies comes to Kirn Primary
Thumbs-up for Scoular Anderson at Kirn Primary
Primary 5/4 gave local illustrator (and former pupil) Scoular Anderson a big ‘thumbs-up’ after his visit to their class in Kirn Primary as part of the Creative Words around Cowal festival.
Scoular showed us his cartoon-style historical illustrations and explained how he goes about drawing them. He introduced us to one of his characters “who didn’t like blood”, so was given a “safety sword with a boxing glove on the end!” Continue reading Thumbs-up for Scoular Anderson at Kirn Primary
Kirn Primary visit Medieval Stirling
Primaries 5, 6 and 7 spent the day at the medieval castle of Stirling to bring to life all their work on the Scottish Wars of Independence and Milestones in Scottish History.
Highlights of the trip were the Great Hall “where they dined and danced, and at night the servants slept there”. The Jester told a story about “changing mud into gold, and everyone was acting parts” and there were visits to the King’s Garden and the forest where the King would hunt.
: Aladdin! What a show at Kirn Primary
The combined P5,6 and P7 classes put on an outstanding show this week with some stellar performances from the hilarious Widow Twanky, the panto villain Abanazer, the love struck Aladdin and the lovely Princess Jasmine. A hugely professional, fun and uplifting performance, which as one audience member suggested, “was good enough for a Queen’s Hall production”.

DGS pupil Shannon Brings Sunshine to Kirn Nursery
One of the four focuses (or capacities) of The Curriculum for Excellence is to encourage pupils to become effective contributors to their communities. What better way to do this than to volunteer some time to help out at a local nursery school. This is what Shannon Lyon, S5 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School and full time pupil in the learning centre, has been doing since August 2013.

World Book Day at Kirn Primary
The children (and teachers) at Kirn Primary were missing on World Book Day! Instead, the school was filled with Little Red Riding Hood, The Big Bad Wolf, Cruella de Ville (and a dalmatian), The Cat in the Hat, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Wally, Nanny McPhee, even Willy Wonka and an Oompah Loompah! Everyone had a great time as they visited other classes to read and be read to. Back in class there was story writing, bookmark making, and of course, lots of reading for pleasure. In conjunction with Scholastic’s ‘We Are Writers’ service, an amazing story by every child from Kirn Primary School has been included in a real paperback book, available for parents to buy.
