£3000 charity windfall on offer thanks to DGS Young Philanthropists

An innovative school based project, designed to encourage young people to think about prominent social issues and build strong partnerships with local charities was launched in Dunoon Grammar School on Monday, 24 August 2015.

Dunoon Primary Choir sing at Summer Extravaganza at Dgs.

DPS Choir 1Dunoon Primary School Choir sang their hearts out tonight at the Summer Extravaganza at Dunoon Grammar School.They confidently sang 5 songs including Under the Sea, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, When You Believe, I Can I Will and Sing.
This was the first time the choir had appeared on stage at the local Secondary School. the choir certainly rose to the occasion and were really delighted with their performance.

DGS Grangemouth Success

DGS Grangemouth SuccessOn the 3rd of June 2015 some pupils from Dunoon Grammar School took part in Scottish Disability Sports National Junior Athletics tournament in Grangemouth. Competitors from all over the country gather to race against each other. This is the fifth time that DGS pupils have participated.
Each competitor had three events which included 60m, 100m, shot putt, standing long jump and running long jump. The day was bright, windy and cold and perfect for competing. Continue reading DGS Grangemouth Success

Dunoon Primary School showcase ‘Project Spark’ and ‘Vex IQ’ Robotics

DPS Project Spark 1At the Technology Showcase event at Dunoon Grammar School on Saturday 23rd May, pupils from Dunoon Primary School showcased a new powerful coding game called Project Spark. Using this software, children are able to build and play on their own worlds, stories and games.

Vocal workshop at DPS

DPS Vocal Workshops 1P3, P4 and our Pre 5 pupils were delighted to take part in a Vocal Workshop, organised and led by Miss McChesney, music teacher from Dunoon Grammar School and some of her fantastic pupils! The children learned some new songs, harmonised in groups with actions and dance moves. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. What a wonderful way to improve and add to their performance skills. An excellent opportunity to work in co-operation with enthusiastic and supportive secondary school pupils. Kirn PS Transition 1Girls from S3 at Dunoon Grammar School visited our classroom in Kirn today to tell us more about life in Dunoon Grammar School and they were great!

After a brain gym game to get us actively thinking, they divided us into groups and worked with us, brainstorming our worries and encouraging us to remember the positives about ‘moving up to The Grammar’.

Dunoon Grammar School Music visit Kirn Early Learning and Childcare Centre

DGS visit Kirn PS  Early YearsOn Wednesday 29th April Karen McChesney and pupils from Dunoon Grammar School visited the Early Learning and Childcare Centre at Kirn to share some musical experiences. the children had fun with vocal warm-ups, clapping, dancing and singing and then enjoyed listening to Karen’s guitar playing.

ROBERT’S CAP CALL FOR SCOTLAND

Dunoon Grammar School pupil Robert Miller receives a call-up to the Scotland National Disabilities Senior Squad. Dunoon Grammar School’s Robert Miller is preparing himself to take on this best footballers in the world, having gained his first ever call-up to Scotland’s National Disability Senior Squad. Robert, who had previously played for the Development Squad received the all-important letter on November 7 informing him of his inclusion in the senior squad. Prestigious National Award for DGS Gaelic Teacher

Pupils and staff at Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating the news that Gaelic teacher, Laura Howitt has scooped this year’s Daily Record Scottish Gaelic Awards for Innovation in Education. Now in its second year, the Daily Record Scottish Gaelic awards, sponsored by Bord Na Gaidhlig, was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow on Wednesday, 19 November. Maths Guest Speaker Visit

As part of Dunoon Grammar School’s aim to improve attainment and to promote mathematics as a subject that provides enjoyment, a guest speaker, Professor Adam McBride OBE visited Dunoon Grammar School today in order to give a series of talks to selected S1, S3 and Senior pupils. Professor McBride, having taught at the University of Strathclyde for over forty years, has recently retired but still visits schools around the country. He has given countless lectures and masterclasses to pupils from P6 upwards. In 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was awarded an OBE for services to the understanding of mathematics in schools. Today’s talks generated interest and involvement from pupils and were well received.  Problems that have remained unsolved in the maths community were explained along with the importance of maths in everyday life and possible future careers.

Scottish Cup winner Kara Called Up for West of Scotland.

Kara Chalmers an S2 pupil from DGS has been chosen to play for the West of Scotland U15 girls football team. Kara, who is a member of the U13s Celtic side that achieved Scottish Cup success earlier this month, has been playing football for three years and was delighted with the call up to the West of Scotland squad. Kara who plays right midfield for ‘The Hoops’ was surprised when her dad received an email informing him of Kara’s inclusion in the squad – a squad that is mainly made of girls from the greater Glasgow area and who are a year older than Kara.
Kara stated: “I skimmed over the email and at first thought I had not been included in the West of Scotland squad. I was then exstatic when my dad pointed out that infact I was part of the squad! I’m just ready to get playing!”

Pupils in Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating the success of a song released to commemorate the centenary of World War 1. (see below to hear the fabulous song)
Arlene MacKechnie (15) and Abigail Pryde (17) from the Argyll and Bute school published a version of Eric Bogle’s iconic song ‘No Mans Land’ on Social Media on Remembrance Day, 11 November, 2014 – a version of the song that Eric himself has described as ‘truly truthful and emotive’.

DGS FUN RUN FUND TO BE USED TO HONOUR KARRA

On Thursday 25th September 2014, over 700 pupils and staff of Dunoon Grammar School participated in the Karra Downie charity fun run. Pupils across the school collected sponsors, Alana Scott, Claire Black, Caitie & Sam Esler and Lee Sharp all raised the most amount of money and will be receiving a medal for their efforts.

All the money raised was collected to make an exceptional total of over £9,500.

DGS Success at Inverclyde Cross Country Championships

Pupils at Dunoon Grammar School are celebrating success at the recent Inverclyde Cross Country Championships held earlier this month in Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm.
Second year twins Nuala and Cliona McCheyne finished first and second in the S2 race, with Niamh Doherty winning the S1 girl’s race and Alan Mollins claiming second in the S1 boys race.

DGS No-Smoking Film Claims Two National Awards

In June 2013, a number of pupils from Dunoon Grammar School joined together to create a short film to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking. The film was called ‘The Last Cigarette’ and was made by passionate drama students along with the help of David Hayman’s film company, Shooters and NHS Highland. The film originally came about because the NHS had asked the Charity Spirit Aid, also operated by David Hayman, to come up with ideas for an anti-smoking video that would be aimed at young people and would encourage them to not only stop smoking but not to start in the first place. Dunoon Grammar School Numeracy News

On Wednesday 29th October a group of pupils from the S3 Numeracy project attended a Challenge Day at Clydeview Academy. The pupils spent the day working in teams, made up of both schools, trying to solve logic puzzles and problem solving questions. Pupils from both schools worked very hard to be part of the winning team but with only two unsolved puzzles and more than half of the problem solving puzzles correct the winning team included Briege Liddell and Evan Meyer-McDonagh from DGS. DGS Physics Phenomenons Storm into Semi-Finals

Three senior physics students at Dunoon Grammar School enjoyed success in the first round of the West of Scotland Physics Education Group competition.
S5 pupils Rowan Oxland, Peter Swift and Scott Morton worked on a number of University standard physics experiments before putting their knowledge to the test in a series of quiz style tasks.

An appeal – DGS Young Musicians looking for Instruments
