DGS Autism Awareness

DGS Autism AwarenessApril 1st 2016 was Autism Awareness Day in Dunoon Grammar School. The Learning Centre pupils prepared a Power Point presentation to show at house time and made a whole army of gingerbread cookies to sell on the day. The whole school was invited to design jigsaw pieces which were joined together for display in the Forum, showing that DGS supports Autism awareness. The event was a great success so well done to everyone involved. A total of £120 was raised for our local autism support organisation: Autism Argyll.

Castlehill Primary’s P5-7 girls have enjoyed after school SOS fitness sessions over the last few weeks. Fiona and Morgan Irwin have provided a varied programme of activities including dance, boxing and the much loved boot camp experience! Castlehill Primary School wants to motivate its pupils to keep fit and active, and to improve social and emotional wellbeing.

Technologies Showcase at Innellan Primary

Innellan Tech Showcase 2Pupils from Toward, Innellan, St Muns and Dunoon, supported by Gary Clark and Steven Simpson have been learning how to write computer code. Dunoon has been using Lego WeDo and the other schools have been using Kudo. The progress and improvements in the pupils independent working and problem solving has been fantastic and the pupils over a period of a few weeks have managed to develop a wide range of simple to complex games.

Heavenly Bowmore Choir Hosts Lunch!

Bowmore Heavenly ChoirOn Monday 7th March, 22 very excited children took the bus up to our Gaelic College to be part of the opening celebrations of Bowmore’s Lunch Club. This new club has been set up by Gill Chasemore who invited our choir to sing as part of the ceremony.
They sang a toe-tapping selection, including their Mod winning entry Puirt à Beul!
All club members enjoyed the performance as well as all the other visitors at the college. The choir and their conductor, Alison Gray, enjoyed not one but two rounds of applause – and they deserved it!

World Book Day at Strachur

Strachur World Book Day 1 MARCH 2016Strachur Primary and Pre-5 had so much fun celebrating World Book Day last Thursday. Staff and pupils dressed as their favourite character from a book and we shared snippets from our favourite books from home. The Pre-5 children enjoyed a Bookbug session in the morning and the older pupils read to our P1-2 in the afternoon. We have also spent some money on a new library for the school – house captains helped organise the books and everyone got to take one home on loan. It was a very busy day!

Drumlemble and Carradale World Book day 1World book day was celebrated in style by the children and staff at Drumlemble and Carradale Primary Schools. Everyone rose to the occasion and came to school dressed as a book character. These ranged from Gangster Granny, to Katy Morag and even the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.

Strachur Early Level Class Forest School

Strachur Forest School 2Our early level class have had two very exciting sessions of Forest School led by our P1-2 teacher, Mrs Leyland. Our Pre-5, Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils have enjoyed getting muddy whilst developing various skills in outdoor education.

DGS Learning Support Department Annual Christmas FayreOn the 16th of December 2015 Dunoon Grammar school Learning support department held its annual Christmas fayre. At the fayre there were lots of different stalls such as tombola, raffle, baking, homemade decoration, wood crafts and Guess the weight of the Christmas cake. For the first time ever there was a Santa’s Grotto and Kirn Primary Nursery children enjoyed meeting Santa and getting a small present.

St. Joseph’s success at Local Competition!

St Josephs Toyota 1Friday 15 January was a special day for two pupils at St. Joseph’s Primary. Both Cameron and Ellisia came 3rd and 2nd respectively in the under 8’s section of the local Toyota Dream Car competition. Both children’s parent attended along with their Head Teacher. It was a proud moment for all the adults as Cameron and Ellisia collected their prize. Who knows?….one of the children’s creations might one day grace the future showroom of Toyota yet!!!!

Happy,Healthy Me workshop at Castlehill

Castlehill health 1Primary 1 and 1/2 invited their preschool friends over to join them in their Happy,healthy me workshop. The children are learning to make healthy choices and were involved in a range of activities including ; making fruit salad, golf and football taster sessions. Catherine McTaggart the school nurse spoke to the children about healthy eating too. What a good start to the new year !

St. Mun’s Children Boost Local Food Bank

St Muns Foodbank 1While it is only natural for children to look forward to Christmas and to receiving presents from Santa, the children of St. Mun’s took time out this Advent Season to remember people less fortunate than themselves. The children were asked to donate one item of food, which could be put into a food parcel and delivered in time for Christmas to people who needed a little help this holiday season.

Christmas Spirit at St. Joseph’s

St Josephs Fooodbank 1The children and parents of St. Joseph’s were recently asked to donate luxury food items to school during the season of advent to assist those in need in the community. As a tradition St Joseph’s has always made food bags and given them to the senior citizens in the area. However, this year we decided to spread the Christmas cheer even further. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of parents and pupils and were not only able to give food bags to the senior citizens but also made healthy donations of food to the Food bank in Helensburgh.
