P4/5 were showing their creativity on Friday, 21st February and having a good time into the bargain, when they had the chance to work with Alison McAlpine on designing and making a banner which may end up in the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

In the Autumn Primary 3 in Park Primary School undertook an interdisciplinary study on The Tropical Rainforest and as part of this they compared the local temperate rainforest, Dunollie Woods, to the tropical Amazon Rainforest. As a final outcome for their learning the whole class took part in an informative assembly at the end of November which was performed in front of the other children as well as any family members who wanted to come along. At the end of the assembly donations were collected and have now been used to protect an acre of the Rainforest through the Rainforest Concern Organisation.
This term P5 are learning about The Vikings. All the pupils are thoroughly enjoying the topic and have produced some fantastic work. They have designed and made Viking shields from wood, drawn longships and have used ICT skills to produce Viking factsheets. Pupils have also made their own Vikingbook page with their own wall post and profile picture ( dressed as their Viking character). We are all looking forward to continuing this topic and a trip to Vikingar to learn more.
Everyone in Dalintober Primary’s P7 class had a super time during their Mini Commonwealth Games which were held in school last week. The Games marked the end of an Interdisciplinary Task all about The Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Games.
A variety of activities had been enjoyed by the class leading up to The Dalintober Games, including compiling factfiles about some Commonwealth countries, making clay tiles to advertise the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and using a Diamond Nine to make group decisions about which events were most important. Stramash Social Enterprise and Oban Phoenix Cinema have joined forces to present a showing of the feature length documentary Project Wild Thing. The award winning film is currently touring the UK. It brings the complex issue of the ways in which our children do (or don’t) interact with the natural world to our attention. The project has gathered significant support throughout the United Kingdom from the RSPB, the National Trust, schools, nurseries and other educational organisations.
The last week in January was China Week at Lismore Primary School. The children had suggested this themed week earlier in the year as they were keen to learn more about the country and compare it with their own. They had a brainstorm planning session where they decided what they wanted to find out about and the week was developed from these ideas. In Rockfield School two classes, P5/4 mainstream and P7/6/5 Gaelic, have worked together to learn about the life of the ancient Drovers in Argyll.
They have worked in partnership with Joyce Gilbert from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Sally Harkness, Storyline Scotland, with both classes following Sally’s world renowned Storyline Approach. It has been a wonderful example of Curriculum for Excellence at its best and a thematic approach to Social Studies.

Monday 27th January marked Holocaust Memorial Day where communities across the world are asked to come together to remember those affected by genocide. The theme for 2014 is ‘Journeys’ and S3 students at Lochgilphead High School decided to use the Kindertransport, where Jewish children were removed from their families and sent to safety in Britain, as the focus for their presentation to P7 and S2 students in the campus.
Stramash was delighted to welcome Michael Russell MSP , to view the projects and work of the organisation. He began the day by visiting the children at the outdoor nursery site to explore the site and discover more about the learning taking place within the early years setting outdoors. The children were very inquisitive to meet their special visitor!
We transformed one of our classrooms into a Black house and opened a museum up for 3 days to our local community all about St Kilda. We found out just how hard life was for the St Kildans and how extreme the conditions were to survive on the Island which was evacuated in 1930. We had to take what we learned and present it in a way that would make our visitors to feel like they were actually on the Island and for it to be interactive.
Dalintober held its annual Oxfam Sale recently. Instead of ordering from the Oxfam catalogue we asked for the money to go directly to the people of the Philippenes. The whole school took part by bringing in their toys, games and books. Primary 5 organised the sale and some acted as stall keepers while others helped the customers by being personal shoppers.
Just before the end of last term the first year pupils at DGS had the opportunity to encounter the Christmas story from the bible through a series of interactive stations. The stations were presented by volunteers from local Dunoon churches, and covered stories such as the shepherds near Bethlehem being greeted by an angel, the journey of Mary and Joseph for a Roman census and the wisdom and gifts of the wise men.

After having sat their exam in May, the Higher French class of 2012-13 benefited from the ability to keep up their speaking and language skills, through travelling to Geneva in Switzerland the following term. Although none of the pupils carried the subject on to Advanced Higher level, they were all keen to not lose the attribute of knowing a foreign language.
Every year in Dunoon Grammar School, The Learning Support Department hosts a Christmas Fayre to raise money for their chosen charity, ‘World Vision.’ ‘World Vision’ is a charity that helps children and their community to achieve success in far less privileged parts of the world than ours. This year’s event was similar to previous years but unlike previous years, when teachers have organised everything, this year S6 pupil Rebecca Westwood played the coordinating role.

Mrs. Watson’s P5/4 and Mrs.Kersel’s P5/6/7Gaelic classes have been learning about the Drovers in the 1700s. Using a new storyline being piloted for Storyline Scotland and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society the classes have followed the journey of two young teenage boys, Rob and Angus, on their first Drove. Engagement with the characters has brought the story to life for the pupils as they learned about sheiling life, hardships on the drove and the joys of the Tryst.

On Friday Primary 6&7 pupils at Port Ellen were visited by artist and teacher Phillipa Mitchell for an afternoon of geese and art. Islay is famous for its winter visitors, the barnacle geese, and Phillipa wanted to find out how the children felt about the geese. In the morning children debated in class the pros and cons of the geese visiting Islay: they are beautiful and attract birdwatchers and tourists, but they also destroy the grass and make life very difficult for farmers. Opinion was divided about what should be done about the 50,000 visitors the Island receives each year.

Moved by the images of Typhoon Haiyan, pupils and staff at Tobermory High School swung into action to organise a fundraising breakfast. Our event on Wednesday raised over £600 for the Disasters Emergency Committee Philippines appeal. Pupils from P1- S6 got together in the canteen to share bacon rolls, and the canteen made a cauldron of delicious porridge. The Traditional Music group provided a rousing accompaniment to the event, and there were games to take part in.

Children, parents, friends, relatives all worked together to improve the grounds of Rosneath Primary School. Many projects were undertaken (including giving our willow dome a “haircut”, building a hedgehog motel, insect hotel and beetle B & B, planting up some wellies and generally giving the grounds a “facelift”! and everybody pitched in – the “before” and “after” showed just how much hard work went in to the day.

On Monday the 11th of November 2013 Sandbank Primary School’s senior pupils in mainstream and Gaelic held an Armistice Service attended by the junior pupils, pre-five unit and staff. The older children had all walked down to the War Memorial at Lazaretto Point the previous week and researched the history behind it. They discovered plaques from both the 1st and 2nd World Wars detailing the names and roles of local men who lost their lives in conflict.
