Dear Diary,
Day One
I’m looking forward to our Oscars award ceremony. I’m excited about making a film and I can’t wait to write a script and make props and backdrops because I love the thought of making a film as it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m not really worried about anything. I think the thing that will challenge me most is writing WW1 style as I struggle to write about things that have already happened.

Rosneath Primary School – Burns Supper
Rosneath Primary School, P7/6 held a superb Burns Supper on the evening of Monday 27 January 2015.
After a supper of Soup followed by Haggis, neeps and tatties, then some of Mrs Johnson’s famous Shortbread, the pupils gave us an excellent evening of entertainment in true Burns fashion, from their ‘toasts’ (how witty the toast to the Lassies and also Rhys’s reply from the Lassies), to poetry, singing and dancing for all. Burns Supper at Kirn Primary
Today Kirn Primary School’s P7 pupils celebrated the birth of Scotland’s most famous poet by hosting a Burns Supper for parents and friends, together with four invited guests from the community.
Braw day out for Strath of Appin pupils
Children from Primary 3, Primary 4 and Primary 5 attended a Burns’ Event, for local primary schools, which was held at the Corran Halls, Oban on the 27th of January. It was all smiles as the children proudly wore the medals that they had won in the various Recitation, Art and Writing in Scots competitions.
Burns’ Afternoon at Rosneath
Primary 1 pupils at Rosneath enjoyed a fun Friday afternoon, with a Scottish twist, to celebrate Burns’ Night. Pupils enjoyed learning and performing Scottish poem, “The Lollipop Man” and Scottish song “Ye Canny Shove Yer Granny Aff a Bus”. To complete the Scottish experience the children took part in Scottish dancing; ate and drank an array of Scottish foods; wore tartan clothes and accessories and created their own Scotland flags. An awesome afternoon was had by all!
Rothesay Primary: Outstanding P7 Burns Supper!
What a fantastic afternoon at Mount Stuart for the P7 Burns Supper. The children led the whole event from the Selkirk Grace to the Vote of Thanks. We had recitations, songs, instrumentalists and highland dancing… a full afternoon celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns. Miss Henry and Mrs Watson wish to thank Mrs McKirdy and Mr Briggs for their efforts, Mount Stuart for the use of their premises, MacQueen’s Butcher for donating the delicious haggis and local farm Birgidale Butts for the tatties and neeps!

Tobermory on Trial!
As part of their learning on Crime and Punishment, S3 Social Subjects pupils from Tobermory, recently took part in a mock trial. The canteen was set up like an authentic court room and everyone in the class had a role to play; from prosecution and defence lawyers, to the usher and court clerk. We even had our own court artists and a representative from the press. In the end, and after some convincing arguments, the defendant was found “not guilty” by the jury.
Kelvingrove visit from Rothesay academy Art dept
Rothesay Academy Pupils Visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery On Monday the 19th of January S3 and S4 Art and Design students from Rothesay Academy visited the Kelvingrove Art Galleries in Glasgow. It was a fantastic day out taking in the splendour of one of Glasgow’s most magnificent and best loved buildings bathed, as it was, in glorious winter sunshine!

Beach Schools
Clachan and Skipness Primary School have recently taken part in a six week block of Beach Schools with the Grab Trust. They carried out a beach clean and had a treasure hunt. The children made mobiles using different types of shells which they learned to identify. They also listened to a brilliant story-teller and made pictures on the beach. They really enjoyed building shelters, making fires, having hot chocolate made in a kelly kettle and toasting marshmallows!
Road Safety Calendar Competition
We are extremely pleased that 2 of our 4 pupils got recognition for the entries into the annual Road Safety Calendar Competition.
Connor Coombes won 1st place in his P4 category and Abi MacCorquodale received a Highly Commended in her P5 year group. June Graham, A&B Road Safety Officer popped in to hand over their pictures with certificates and a £25 voucher for Connor to spend at Amazon. Well done to both of you
Barcaldine Nativity
The cool angels from Barcaldine Primary School did God’s list of jobs at their nativity performance on Tuesday evening. A church full of family and friends joined in singing carols and taking part in a Christmas quiz and enjoyed a very entertaining evening. They especially enjoyed the creative use of giant cut out shepherds and kings on wheels to complete the scene. Our silver collection raised £74.80 for Text Santa.
Clachan and Skipness Christmas Show
Clachan and Skipness pupils entertained audiences in both schools with their wonderful performance of Snowwhite. The children had written an alternative Christmas ending and Santa Claus even made an appearance. The show also featured instrumental pieces and Christmas carols. Thank you to everyone who came along!
Fruity Phonic Fun at Furnace!
Yesterday the children in P6/7 received a surprise parcel in the post.
Mrs Baird had been looking for a new way to encourage the children when learning their spelling words and had come across the Fruitella Fruit letters which could be found in a pack.
P7 Dragons Den at Rothesay Primary 2014
Primary 7 pupils at Rothesay Primary wowed the ‘Dragons’ with innovative inventions at their Dragons’ Den event on Friday 5th of December. Each pupil designed a product, composed a pitch and made a model. These ideas were presented to a panel of ‘Dragons’ – local business people who gave up their afternoon to grill each pupil on their product, and choose the award winners.
Speech Contest Success for Dunoon Primary!
Dunoon Primary School pupils were presented with the winning star at the final of the Association of Speakers Club final at Dunoon Grammar School on Friday 5th December. Aidan was the proud winner with Lily joint runner up. The quality of all the speeches on the night was amazing as the pupils from various other local primary schools took part. The judges commented on all the children’s varied speech topics and that the pupils had worked so hard achieving high standards overall. Well done!
Book Week Scotland
To celebrate Book Week Scotland, team members from the Early Years Service and CAST have been out and about in Argyll & Bute hosting pirate themed Bookbug events for 730 children, aged 0 to 6 years, in Oban, Mid Argyll and Islay. The team performed action songs and rhymes in both English and Gaelic alongside the children who had been given CDs and booklets to practice in advance. They were joined in each location by local storyteller Alasdair Satchell who told the highly entertaining tale of Seumas and the pirate, Captain Gilly White.
Tobermory High School celebrated Book Week Scotland
Tobermory High School celebrated Book Week Scotland with a range of quirky, paper-related, activities. S1 used old books to create a stylish ‘Dress for a Booklover.’ Meanwhile, over the course of the week, the decking area was transformed to a wintry Narnia. Students tried their hands at origami and cake frosting, and primary pupils joined the Lady in the Green Kirtle for a storytelling session. Back in class, S6 students took some of their favourite books into primary. They talked about what they liked to read when they were in P7, and demonstrated that no-one is too old to enjoy a story, especially when it involves audience participation!
Lochgilphead Primary’s ‘Night at the Movies’
P7 and P7/6 pupils are shown here on the morning after a very successful ’Night at the Movies’ which was the final outcome for their Very Important Bear interdisciplinary learning topic. Pupils worked in groups of four to produce their own movies. They wrote the scripts, made props and then filmed using iMovie on our recently acquired iPads. Finally pupils edited their work, added titles, music and credits to produce the finished movie. The Assembly Hall was packed as parents and friends were treated to twelve very entertaining movies. The cakes and popcorn also went down well!
Bookbug Bags at Kilcreggan
P7/6 pupils at Kilcreggan Primary school shared the Book bug bags and stories with P1 pupils before pupils took their bags home to share with parents. P7/6 pupils showed great leadership skills when they read the stories to their buddies and guided them through discussion about each book . They also helped P1 pupils to complete some of the activities in their workbooks. P1 pupils showed excellent listening and talking skills during the sessions which have taken place over the past three weeks in preparation for Bookbug week. St Columba’s Young Writers
The pupils of P5/4 and P6/7 recently entered the Young Writers ‘Out of this World’ poetry competition. They were asked to create an imaginative poem on any theme which demonstrated a command of ambitious vocabulary, imagery, similes, alliteration and other poetic techniques. P5/4 chose to base their poems on Space while P6/7 chose the theme ‘Fireworks.’
