To celebrate the centenary of the Picture House in Campbeltown, Home Economics pupils in S1 and S2, studied the history of the Picture House in Campbeltown, using the internet and “The Wee Pictures” website.
Pupils found it fascinating to see the huge changes which have been made over the years, taking into account the changes in society and the impact of technology.
Following their investigations, everyone got their “designer hats” on to come up with ideas for a celebration cake for the event.

Mid Argyll Photo Competition Winner
Wordsmith Holly ‘seas’ off the competition
Holly Smith, first year student of Lochgilphead High School, was selected out of 74,000 entries to take part in the next stage of the Chris Evans’ 500 Word Short Story competition.
The nationwide competition held by the Radio 2 breakfast show was open to any pupil under the age of 14 that could invent an imaginative storyline. Holly came up with the concept of her story whilst doing a class exercise in English, and her piece was specially chosen to be included in the shortlist of the top 50 entrants.

Celebration of Art Exhibition at John Logie Baird
Last week we held Our Celebration of Art exhibition in school. Since late November we have been working closely with our Local Art Group to provide quality learning experiences for our children through the medium of art.
Teachers planned a series of lessons that built in problem solving, creativity, discovery, challenge and in some cases maths!

Death and the Afterlife
S1/2 in Tobermory completed their RME conferences for this year with a day on the theme of Death and the Afterlife. This could have been a particularly difficult theme to work on but S1/2 participated in the day in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. The group started the morning together discussing why we have funeral services and went to the church where Mr Paton talked through some of the ways in which people deal with loss and how a funeral might look in the Church of Scotland and how funerals have changed over the years. Kirn Primary P7 are the Music Business at James Watt College We have been working on mixing our own music in school using Garage Band for our space topic, and on Friday 31st May Kirn Primary P7 pupils had an exclusive tour around the Music Department at James Watt College in Greenock. We visited the subterranean drumming studio, the hi-tech mixing studios and the DJ studio to see how music is created and crafted. Kilcreggan Primary School Visit Glasgow Science Centre
Our Primary 4, 5, 6 & 7 classes visited the Glasgow Science Centre on Wednesday 29th May and had a very exciting day. After spending the morning looking at exhibits they went in to the laboratory and learned all about how to extract DNA. Each child came back to school with a unique necklace containing a sample of their DNA!

Macbeth at Kilmodan Primary School
Last week Kilmodan Primary School had another successful tearoom. We have been running a tearoom for the last three years. This year we are raising money for our school to go to Edinburgh for two days. While we are there we will be going to the zoo, Edinburgh Castle and we hope to go to the cinema. The children do home baking for every tearoom and serve the tea and coffee. It is a great time for the whole community to get together.

Samba at St. Joseph’s
Friday 17 May was a fantastic day at St. Joseph’s with P6 having their first of three lessons on ‘Samba Drumming’. So good was P6 on their first day of lessons that Ms England (drumming teacher) commented on the speed of their progress. It was such a beautiful day that Ms England took the children outside to practise their drumming. That, in turn, brought out the whole school as Ms Collins invited everyone to enjoy the session and join in with some dancing.
Rothesay Primary Sleepover raises £1,917.50!
Pupils from Primary 4-7 of Rothesay Primary School took part in a 12 hour sponsored lock in at their school! Activities on offer were: a nail salon, cupcake decorating, a hair salon, football on the astro, SingStar in the GP Room, pancake making in the Home Ec department, trampolining, table tennis, computer suite and arts & crafts. We watched a film on the big screen in the assembly hall together before heading to bed – in the classrooms!

Pirate Day’ at Dalintober Primary
A special ‘Pirate Themed Day’ for pupils in Pre-5, Primary 1, Primary 1/2 and Primary 2 of Dalintober Primary School was a huge success! This followed an Active-Learning based IDT which saw pupils using literacy, numeracy, social studies and expressive arts skills to explore the world of pirates. Pupils and staff enjoyed dressing up as pirates for the day, talking like pirates and participating in activities like ‘Walking The Plank!’ and ‘Pin The Patch On The Pirate’ – a great celebratory outcome of a fun learning topic!
Dunoon Primary School Super Samba
Dunoon Primary were treated to the super sound of Samba Drumming at assembly on Wednesday morning. The hall was filled with lots of excited children from the Pre Fives up to Primary 7s and they enjoyed a marvellous display. The performance was by a group of enthusiastic musicians who have been attending an after-school Samba club where they have been not only developing their Samba skills but also having a lot of fun!
New Band on the Block
A brand new after school Wind Band ”Ceol Na Cloinne”(Music of the Children) for Primary 3 & 4 children has been formed on the Isle of Islay; they meet every Friday at 4.00 pm at Islay High School and they are already making some great sounds. The young musicians come from every Primary School on the island and they really enjoy making music together.
SAMBA!
Primary 5 pupils at St. Andrew’s Primary school have been discovering the art of Samba drumming and learning about the music and culture of Brazil. Led by their enthusiastic instructor, Stephen McNally, they showed off their new found musical skills to family and friends in an open-air concert, on Thursday 9th May.
Park Primary is 40!
Park Primary School celebrated its 40th Birthday on Friday 3rd May. The school was decorated with banners and balloons and the whole school sang ‘Happy Birthday’ at assembly! There is going to be a concert held on 20th June to celebrate the 40th year with P6/5, P7/6 and P7 classes all taking part in separate performances. Happy Birthday Park!!
Tayvallich’s Medieval Mayhem!
Tayvallich Primary School and Kilmartin House Museum hosted a medieval day of fun, for their Northern Irish friends from Mill Strand Integrated Primary. We did a round robin of activities, which included medieval cooking outside (which tasted fantastic!), a tour of Dun Mhuirich (where we showed everyone the medieval house which had been discovered), made a graveslab each for a medieval soldier with clay and we learnt some Scottish Country Dancing with Mary and John Gillies (which came in useful later!). Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival
Kilninver Primary had great fun preparing for and taking part in the Highlands and Islands Music Festival. The Whole School including some of the staff took part in the Instrumental Ensemble, they sang and played Daydream believer .

Argyll Brass is a band started up by Mr Tarn in January last year. The band is made up of primary 7’s to S5’s: Fiona cupples, Matthew Tanner, Gavin Johnson, Amy Lockhart, Eilish Malcolm, Carys Macpherson,Sean Doogan, Fergus Langlands, Sam Barker, Hollie MacGregor,Eden Mikula, Alister Cupples, Sinead Pow and Freya Corner and pupils from other schools.
