On Tuesday 18th March Keills Primary 5 -7 made a Commonwealth Banner. Sian McQueen, an artist from the mainland, helped us make it. First we discussed what things made Scotland unique. Once we had enough ideas we organised ourselves into groups – a border group, an iconic images group, and a slogan group. We then planned what we were going to do. Band news from Islay……
Members of Islay High School Band and the Primary Schools Band travelled to Glasgow last Thursday 20th March. While we were in Glasgow the children heard and worked with world class professional musicians, and had a fantastic tour of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Both Bands also competed at the Mid Argyll Music Festival and played very well indeed, and as an added bonus the Primary Band was awarded the” Helen & Hugh Smith Trophy”. The photo was taken on the steps of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Teaching Dance course 1st April

Bright Sparks at Small Isles Primary
This term the P5-7 children in all the primary schools on Islay and Jura are learning about science and technology. We have been learning about electrical circuits, creating electronic devices, simple programming and discussing the links to real life technologies.

Together Again!
On Wednesday 5th of March Keills and Small Isles Primary travelled down to Port Charlotte School to do some team building challenges.
First we were put into teams and it was good because the groups had children from different schools. This meant we could make new friends. The first challenge we did was a dragon game. I liked it because you had to communicate with lots of different children. We had to try and catch the other teams’ dragon tails. It was great fun.
Grandparents Tea Party at Kirn Primary
The P1 children were so excited to welcome Grannies and Grandas to their classrooms for a wonderful Tea Party this afternoon as part of their ‘Katie Morag’ topic.
Over 50 Grandparents were treated to some fabulous singing of well known Scottish Songs, including Ally Bally, Katie Bairdie and Ma Maw’s a Millionaire.
Sandbank’s Great Exhibition
Gaelic unit P6/7 from Sandbank Primary (Bunsgoil Thaigh a’Chladaich) were learning about the history of the Holy Loch area over the past two hundred years. The work was organised by Fiona Lochhead from Kilmun Mausoleum who arranged for a weaver called Fiona MacDougall and a heritage worker called Robin Patel to come in and work with us.

Victorian CCTV Camera – or Camera Obscura: You Decide.
Pupils from Lochgilphead High School Princes Trust 3xl group spent 3 days in Edinburgh as part of their photography project. They stayed at the wonderfully equipped Forth Lodge based in Bonaly outdoor centre. The group visited the Camera Obscura to learn about different aspects of imagery, textures and optical illusions. There were 5 floors full of new and exciting interactive fun. Samba drumming at Glassary

At our Samba drumming with Steven MacNally, we learned different rhythms. My one was look high look high LOOK HIGH! There were four different instruments. We used Kashishi, Agogo bells tambourim and Sourdo. On Wednesday the 26th February 2014 we performed in front of our friends, family, and the younger class. Thank you Steven, we had so much fun.

‘Options’ Fridays at Dalintober Primary School
Dalintober Primary pupils are enjoying their new skills based programme, called ‘Options’, which has been running every Friday since January. Pupils have ‘opted in’ to one of four areas – Healthy Heroes (Health & Wellbeing), Eco Warriors (Sustainable Education), Techno Whizzes (Technologies) and Smarty Arties (Expressive Arts) – which represent the wide variety of interests and wider achievements of the pupils themselves. KILMARTIN MUSEUM AND DALINTOBER PRIMARY
Primary five at Dalintober Primary School worked with Kilmartin Museum on a very exciting bird project. First the children, accompanied by Julia Hamilton and Kate Moody form Kilmartin Museum, examined stuffed birds and then they walked round the harbour in Campbeltown to see the real thing. They also visited Campbeltown Museum to see where an exhibition of their work would be. The Scottish Book Awards
Primary 1 – 3 pupils from Strone Primary School had a very exciting day out in Glasgow on Wednesday 5th March, attending the Scottish Children’s Book Awards at the Mitchell Library. All the pupils at Strone have been reading the shortlisted titles and voted online for their favourites. At the awards, pupils were able to get their own books signed by the authors and watched the ceremony as the winners were announced.
More literacy themed activities were enjoyed on Thursday 6th March when pupils took part in World Book Day and dressed up as their favourite book characters.

World Book Day Celebrations!
Primary 1 / 2 went Over the Steamy Swamp and had lots of fun. We worked with our shoulder partners and made swamp stories then we made our animal masks. We invited the nursery children for a giant story telling session. They were a very good audience and we all had great fun!
Models In The Making at DPS!!
Pupils, parents and staff of Dunoon Primary School walked the catwalk at the local M & Co store on Thursday evening. The school’s PTA had organised the event to raise money for school trips. The models chose their outfits beforehand and delighted the audience as they wore a range of trendy smart and casual clothes. The sell out event was a huge success and raised over £500 which will no doubt be put to good use next term! Well done everyone – cant wait until next time!
Batman Strikes at Dunoon Primary!
The pupils of Dunoon Primary School were delighted to welcome world acclaimed comic writer Mr Grant Morrison, MBE to their school on World Book Day. Mr Morrison who among other things writes for DC Comics and Marvel Comics enthralled Primary 5,6, and 7 pupils with his talk on his Batman story lines and other Superheroes he has created such as Captain Clyde! He answered many questions the children had about his career and was truly inspirational as he encouraged the children to keep working at whatever they have a passion for and never give up.

Budding Engineers at St Joseph’s!
Last session P5 (now current P6), under the excellent guidance and tuition of class teacher Catherine McLean, entered the Scottish Engineer’s Leaders Award organised by STEM in conjunction with Strathclyde University’s Faculty of Engineering. The project was to create an engineering design for the future and with such a wide remit, the creativity of the children exploded onto the page! The children had to submit a drawing of their design along with a written piece to describe it.
Tarbert Primary School – Banner for Commonwealth Games
P4/5 were showing their creativity on Friday, 21st February and having a good time into the bargain, when they had the chance to work with Alison McAlpine on designing and making a banner which may end up in the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Samba Drumming at Park Primary
During this term the pupils of Primaries 6/5 and 6 in Park Primary have had instruction in samba drumming from Steven MacNally. Over 6 weeks the classes worked hard to learn the rhythms for each instrument culminating in each class performing for 2 younger classes. P6/5 (pictured) will be performing with Steven at the Learning Festival on the 10th March at the Corran Halls. We can’t wait.
Dunoon Grammar School – Higher German Film Trip
On Wednesday 12th January, the Higher German class braved the wild seas to make their way to the Glasgow Film Theatre to view the German film “I feel like Disco” which was showing as part of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival.
Despite being drenched several times, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day out – the film was great!
Park Pupils Impress at Burns Event!
A few weeks ago, Primary 7s at Park School entered the Burns competition at the Corran Halls. After weeks of preparation, the pupils took part in different categories and clearly impressed the judges as they returned to Park with 10 medals in total! These were as follows: silver and bronze in Recitation; silver in Solo Singing; gold and silver in Instrumental; gold and bronze in Art; and gold, silver and bronze in Writing in Scots.
Congratulations to our Primary 7s – we are very proud of their achievements!
