Luing and Easdale pupils enjoy a trip to Oban Airport!

Luing and Easdale VIist to Oban airportEarly level pupils from Luing and Easdale decided to visit Oban Airport as part of their transport topic. They enjoyed looking around the air traffic control tower before watching the Colonsay plane land! They were even allowed to sit on the plane. The firemen at the airport then showed the children their special fire engine and let them sit in the driver’s seat with the flashing lights on. The firemen also demonstrated how far the water shoots out from the hose. The children were excited to watch a helicopter landing. We all had a wonderful day!

Oban High School Visit to HMS Blyth

OHS HMS Blyth 1Pupils of Oban High School were invited along to HMS Blyth, a Minesweeper with the Royal Navy which was in Oban for a few days. The Royal Navy gave the pupils a very informative tour of the ship and really enjoyed learning what life would be like as part of the crew on the HMS Blyth.

Strone Primary School Hooked on Books!

Strone PS World Book Day and Edinburgh visitA group of P6 and 7 pupils were lucky enough to attend the Scottish Book Awards Ceremony for the 8-11 age range, in Edinburgh on Wednesday 4th March. Before the ceremony they met some of the short listed authors and were able to get their books signed. The children were amazed at how young the winning author Alex McCall was. He had only left school three years previously and had been inspired himself by a visit to school by a Scottish Book Trust author!

Achaleven’s Choc-tastic trip!

Chocolate Shop Workshop 016_webIt’s Fairtrade fortnight and Achaleven Primary are celebrating a very important product this year – cocoa. What better way to research than a trip to The Oban Chocolate Company! There was no shortage of staff volunteers for this trip where the pupils were able to learn where chocolate comes from, see what a cocoa pod looks like, as well as getting to sample the different types of chocolate available. They were also able to see the chocolatiers in action in the factory through the viewing window. The pupils then unleashed their decorating talents with their own chocolate designs of lollipops and truffles. The wonderful Chocolate Company staff then helped them box up their wares to take home. Kelvingrove visit from Rothesay academy Art dept

Rothesay Joint Campus Kelvingrove group photo 1Rothesay Academy Pupils Visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery On Monday the 19th of January S3 and S4 Art and Design students from Rothesay Academy visited the Kelvingrove Art Galleries in Glasgow. It was a fantastic day out taking in the splendour of one of Glasgow’s most magnificent and best loved buildings bathed, as it was, in glorious winter sunshine!

‘Lots’ of News from St Andrew’s!

St Andrew’s Primary School’s Third Green Flag!
St Andrew’s Eco Committee met with Paula Love, the Eco Schools Assessor, and informed her of all the hard work put in by the pupils, staff, parents and community members to maintain the Eco School status. After an initial meeting to discuss what has been happening in our school, from weekly litter picking duties to organised days like UNICEF’s Day of Change, the Eco Committee sang our Eco Code; complete with the newly choreographed actions.

ALL SET FOR STRASBOURG!

Following a competitive selection process, S6 Rothesay Academy School Captain, Marjorie Hogarth has gained a place on the prestigious Euroscola visit to Strasbourg and the European Parliament in March 2015. Marjorie will spend a week in Strasbourg and will have the opportunity to attend multilingual presentations in the parliament building alongside students from other European countries. In addition to attending debates, the students will have the opportunity to vote on European issues and gain a deeper insight into topical issues. For Marjorie who has been offered a place at university to study French this is a wonderful opportunity to develop her language skills and prepare for her future studies.

It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.

Victorian’s trip

Primary Six pupils at Rhu Primary School journeyed back in time to find out what life was like for Victorian children.
The class visited New Lanark Heritage Centre, which was well-worth the slightly longer travel time. New Lanark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and proved a perfect venue to stimulate interest in this 18th Century topic.

Castlehill Primary visit Muneroy Tearooms

P7 pupils from Castlehill Primary recently visited Muneroy Tearooms as part of their work leading up to the Kintyre Fun Food Festival event which will take place in CGS on the evening of Wednesday 19th November. The class had read of Francis and Ian’s success at the Scottish Baking Awards. Fifteen pupils travelled down to Southend to present them with a “Congratulations” card and to interview Francis herself.

Teacher locks P5 up in jail

P5s in Dunoon Primary School went to Inverary Jail on Wednesday as part of their Scotland topic. They got there by two mini buses. When they got to the jail the children got changed into prisoner’s outfits and went to the Court Room to listen to some cases. After the Court Room they went to the Airing Yard. The Airing Yard is where the prisoners did exercises like running and walking. Next they went to the Old Jail; it was sort of cold but it’s a lot different nowadays.

Strath of Appin Cycle Ride

Strath of Appin Pre-5 unit and P1 pupils went on a long cycle ride on 17th Sept. The event was suggested by a pre-schooler who enjoyed cycling and as the school is next to the Route 78 track the group took full advantage of this. The children were joined by staff and parent helpers. The children completed a total of 6km, which was a brilliant effort. All children gained a real sense of achievement, enjoyed keeping physically fit and were very responsible whilst cycling as they had to be aware of other users of the track. Furnace Primary “Brave”ly explore Carnasserie Castle

Furnace pupils spent the day at Kilmartin House Museum and Carnasserie Castle learning about the early historic period in Scottish history. They looked for items left behind by Merida and her family around the museum, investigated the carved burial stones in the neighbouring church yard and then prepared pottage, oatcakes and fruit & honey for lunch over an open fire. In the afternoon we explored Carnasserie Castle to try and picture how Merida and her family lived. The castle will feature in an upcoming film to be written, produced and performed by the pupils.

Food to Fork Adventure for Rothesay Primary

Rothesay Primary Eco Committee visited Tesco in Greenock this week to learn more about where their food comes from. Ruth Sharkey set us our first task – to find a rainbow of fruit and veg, name them and find their country of origin. Robin was amazed to find his bananas came all the way from the Cameroons! Next we ventured into the deep freeze! At -12 degrees we had to dress up very warmly. Ruth told us that it is important to keep the food very cold and that the freezers usually run at minus 20 brrrrrr!

Achaleven investigates life on a fish farm.

As part of their topic on the sea Achaleven Primary asked Scottish Sea Farms if they could visit. The staff were fantastic organising all the health & safety involved (including buying in special child lifejackets) and arranged for a trip out to one of their farms at Shuna.
They were taken to the workboat, ‘Endeavour’ and headed out to the farm. It amazed them that amount of technology there is in the middle of the sea – all the computers and cameras!

Danke und auf Wiedersehen

Pupils, parents and staff from Dunoon Grammar School gathered at the school at 6.30 am last Thursday (26 June) to bid a fond farewell to German partners as the 2014 edition of the Dunoon Grammar School and Hardenberg Gymnasium exchange came to a close.

The tearful goodbyes from both sets of pupils as the German bus pulled away from DGS illustrated the success of this year’s exchange and the bond forged between the pupils involved. Continue reading Danke und auf Wiedersehen

Strone Primary School go back to 1939!

The first part of our end of term school trip was a visit to the Scotland Street Museum, where the pupils were taken back in time to experience what life was like for children in 1939.The P1-4 class got ‘Spick, Span and Sporty’ having a taste of the chores children used to do in the home and trying out an old fashioned PE lesson! The P5-7 class took part in an authentic World War ll classroom lesson, and were terrified by the wonderfully acted ‘Miss James’ who had everyone reciting their times tables and writing with ink pens. Cinema Day!

Oban Phoenix Cinema was invaded on Wednesday morning by Barcaldine Primary and Ardchattan Primary pupils who (courtesy of Renewables Now who donated a gift voucher) were booked in to see a film. The children enjoyed watching Rio 2 on the bright orange beanbags whilst munching on popcorn and crisps and slurping on juice!! After the film the Barcaldine children and staff went along to Palava for a spot of lunch. This was a great get together for us as we are sad to have Miss MacLellan our head teacher leave us for pastures new!! Our new acting head Mrs Julie Watson joined us too so now we know who will be greeting us after the summer holidays!!
