Luing’s third green flag proudly hoisted.
Over the past two years all the pupils of Luing Primary have been working very hard towards their third green flag. They investigated the subjects: – waste minimisation, litter and water.
The pupils of Lochdonhead Primary School have planned, resourced, gained funding, and overseen the development of their school playground, creating a story glen, based on an old Gaelic tale, Iolaire Loch Treig. The pupils have worked with various artists and they are even working with pupils in a secondary school in Harrogate, who are designing wooden story boards based on our children’s designs.
We now have a fantastic imaginative play area, including a willow dome with tunnels, a willow cave and a log ringed area.
On Monday 18th March, Alannah from Zoolab visited us as part of our Eco Schools programme. She brought lots of interesting mini beasts including Hissing Cockroaches, Rats, Snakes, Millipedes, Tarantulas and a Tree Frog.

“At Tighnabruaich Early Years Class we have been building an igloo by using 2 litre used plastic milk bottles. Parents and the community alike donated their empty bottles for a few months and the result (thanks to George our Janitor mostly)! was a brilliant play house for the Early Years Class to enjoy.
All built with recycled materials!”
On Saturday 16 March Dervaig children organised their third sponsored walk for Red Nose Day. They walked from Tobermory to Dervaig raising £230, from passing vehicles, in their buckets. They still have to add sponsor money to this fabulous amount! The children appreciated the help from parents and grandparents and would like to say an enormous Thank You to the Bellachroy Hotel for providing soup and sandwiches at the end of this long walk.
Our primary 6/7 class took part in the Inter-Schools Cross Country Competition held at the old Hermitage Academy last Friday. A big thank-you to Martin Caldwell and his team for organising the event and to all those parents and staff who attended last Friday.

Rothesay Primary Pre-5 eco group recently visited their local newspaper, The Buteman to ask for help with their latest campaign. With the help of Alex Robertson, they are going to build an eco greenhouse made out of 2 litre clear plastic bottles. Only its not 10 clear bottles they need, but 2000 which is a very long sing indeed! The Buteman very kindly printed the appeal and with a poster campaign as well, the bottles are flooding in. We have counted 800 so far.
The P1 and P3 class are learning all about lifeboats, lighthouses and the sea in their IDL project, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. One of the many activities this week was visiting the Machrihanish Seabird Observatory and the Campbeltown Lifeboat Station. Last week we had a splendid afternoon in the company of Mr Hector Lamont, who was a lighthouse keeper at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. Mr Lamont and his wife were stationed at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse about 6 miles from Southend School.

Local produce, Kintyre teamed up with NHS Highland as part of their Rocking Red Heart Road show to promote the health benefits of using good wholesome local food. Pupils from Tarbert Academy took advantage of this and all had a great time sampling food and listening to the Barrow Band play their songs about fresh fruit and vegetables.
At the request of the pupils and as part of our Crofting Connections topic we invited an expert willow weaver, Mrs Clark, to come to the school to teach the pupils how to make Willow Fish. Now we have shoals of fish swimming all over the school. The pupils learnt that the willow needed to be soaked to make it pliable, that different types of willow were used for different parts of the fish and how they had to carefully bend the willow in a figure of eight before twisting it to make the tail.

The pupils carefully watched over the eggs, turning them each day and ensuring they were kept at the correct temperature. After a week in the incubator the eggs were eggs-amined to see which ones were fertile. They had 4 fertile eggs and eggs-actly 3 weeks after placing the eggs in the incubator they began to hatch.
On Friday the 1st of March we had a visit from Clyde to Furnace Primary. The children from Minard joined in the fun. We learned about how the mascot was ‘created’ and about the different sports which will be part of the Commonwealth games. Clyde then played a game of rounders with the children and there were lots of ‘high fives’ with him! He even raced the teachers, which was fun for all those watching!
