Dunoon Primary School PTA held a magnificent Christmas Fayre on Thursday 28th November 2013. The hall was packed with parents, pupils and shoppers as the crowd awaited the choir coming on to do a selection of Christmas songs. Santa was busy in his grotto and the teachers and staff were busy in the tearoom serving up a selection of home baked goodies.

Dunoon Primary’s Eco School’s Commitee 2012/2013 were delighted to receive their second Green Flag Award in the summer of 2013. Our Eco School’s assessor, Paul Love was delighted with all the Eco School improvements our school had made for e.g. further improvements to our Fairy Garden and was delighted to witness a real life mum and dad Coal Tit fly out of the newly designed bird house made by one of our P6 pupils and their grandfather last year. Easdale Primary Pre 5
Easdale Primary Pre 5 have been out and about investigating different modes of transport. Over the past few weeks they travelled to Oban on the bus and visited the Fire Station and Lifeboat Station, popping into the CalMac and Scot Rail offices to collect time tables. PC Moore came into school grounds with his police car. The children were very enthusiastic and asked lots of questions about the vehicle and rescue equipment. Their topic will hopefully end with santa and his sleigh.
Cardross Primary Mugdock Park Cross Country Success
Cardross Primary recently competed in the Mugdock Park Cross Country Championships. The pupils from P6 and P7 were accompanied and trained by Mrs Girling. All of the runners were impressive on the day but a notable mention must be given to the P7 boys team who came in first place with some excellent individual performances. This was a fantastic achievement for the boys who were up against some stiff competition from some very large Glasgow schools.

Internet Safety Caption
Nervously, on Friday 1st November 2013, we waited for Sergeant Rae to come in to teach us about the dangers of the internet.
First we learned about file sharing then cautiously we talked openly about e-mail. Crazily, most of us use e-mail often and it is very popular, although Facebook and Twitter are very well known and used as well.
Barnacle, Fish or Fowl?
On Friday Primary 6&7 pupils at Port Ellen were visited by artist and teacher Phillipa Mitchell for an afternoon of geese and art. Islay is famous for its winter visitors, the barnacle geese, and Phillipa wanted to find out how the children felt about the geese. In the morning children debated in class the pros and cons of the geese visiting Islay: they are beautiful and attract birdwatchers and tourists, but they also destroy the grass and make life very difficult for farmers. Opinion was divided about what should be done about the 50,000 visitors the Island receives each year.

School Grounds Day at St Joseph’s
Friday 22 November 2013 was a fantastic day at St. Joseph’s in Helensburgh as parents, pupils and staff joined forces to clean up and plant new life in the school grounds. Everyone from Pre-5 children to adults was involved in various activities throughout the morning. The Pre-5 and infant children were involved in sweeping leaves, picking up litter, weeding and planting flowers and trees whilst the eldest of these children (P3) cleaned up the outdoor classroom and got involved in raking and creating hanging baskets.
Southend Gift to Library
Southend Primary 2 and 4 have recently been visiting Campbeltown Library where they met the puppet ‘Sage’ from Enchanted Learning. Pupils decided to use school funds to buy a pal for Sage, so they bought ‘Onion’. Sage and Onion are now living happily together and this picture shows Caroline Corr from Campbeltown Library visiting the children at school to collect their gift to her.
Rothesay Primary enjoy visit to Mount Stuart
P2/3 and P3 of Rothesay Primary visited Mount Stuart to find out more about Autumn. They enjoyed a beauitiful frosty, bright day. They made pictures using the natural resources found around the grounds. Thanks to Mount Stuart Staff for help and hospitality.

ECO DAY AT KILCREGGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL
Last Thursday Kilcreggan Primary and Pre-5 pupils took part in an Eco Day. Parents and friends were also invited along to help. Activities included; weaving where pupils cut strips from old carrier bags and weaved them through the School fence, kite making, a treasure hunt in the School garden where pupils had to find leaves, insects, plants that matched a colour chart, decorating bird nesting boxes, amking bird feeders and listening to the sounds around us. As you can see from the pictures we all had a great day, despite the weather!
P6/7 Teamwork at Keills Primary
P6/7 pupils from Port Charlotte, Keills and Small Isles came together at Keills Primary School on 13th November, to rekindle friendships after their very successful trip to Oban in September. The children had been corresponding by letter/e-mail since the trip; however with some planning, organisation and good weather we were all able to come together again last Wednesday. Success in Easdale
Congratulations to Charlie Nathan, P7, who came 6th in the Autos category of Motorcross.
Charlie only took up the sport this year and last weekend received a trophy to show her achievements this year. Well done Charlie!
TEAMWORK MAKES A GREAT GROUNDS DAY
Children, parents, friends, relatives all worked together to improve the grounds of Rosneath Primary School. Many projects were undertaken (including giving our willow dome a “haircut”, building a hedgehog motel, insect hotel and beetle B & B, planting up some wellies and generally giving the grounds a “facelift”! and everybody pitched in – the “before” and “after” showed just how much hard work went in to the day.

Christmas Carpentry at Sandbank Primary School
Primary 3 (Mainstream and Gaelic) and GM 6/7 from Sandbank Primary School are using their woodwork skills to transform a square of wood into a star with the minimum of wasted material. GM 6/7 have proved themselves to be responsible and trustworthy therefore they are making their stars as an independent mini-topic whenever they have a spare moment of the day. The younger pupils get their instruction during their Friday afternoon activity lessons.

Sandbank Primary School – Act of Remembrance
On Monday the 11th of November 2013 Sandbank Primary School’s senior pupils in mainstream and Gaelic held an Armistice Service attended by the junior pupils, pre-five unit and staff. The older children had all walked down to the War Memorial at Lazaretto Point the previous week and researched the history behind it. They discovered plaques from both the 1st and 2nd World Wars detailing the names and roles of local men who lost their lives in conflict.

Alimacs Tennis at Cardross
P1-7 pupils at Cardross enjoyed a fun filled tennis day. The tennis sessions were taken by Alan MacBeath, Head Coach at Cardross Tennis Club. The pupils were not the only ones having fun! The staff were treated to an after-school CPD event too.
Terrific Totem poles
The pupils at Strath of Appin Primary have been putting the finishes touches to their Clan Totem Poles – which now look fantastic! The Clans have demonstrated great examples of team-work and co-operation in our Clan Challenge afternoons. So far the clans have designed a clan banner, clan shield and now a clan totem pole. It’s been messy but fun as the children have pulled together their ideas to create a totem pole representing their clan, incorporating the interests of the pupils and the area/environment they live in.
Rockfield Primary visit Oban Lifeboat Station
P2s from Rockfield had a fantastic trip to Oban Lifeboat Station on Friday 8th November. Working in 3 groups, the children got to find out more about the work of the lifeboat, what the crew wear when they are on a rescue and, most importantly, they got to climb aboard the lifeboat for a tour. The children have been learning about People Who Help Us and they were very keen to learn about the work of the RNLI as part of their topic work.

Strone Primary’s Kilmun Pageant
On Thursday the 31st of October, Halloween, Strone Primary’s p5 to 7s took part in a pageant in partnership with Argyll Mausoleum. We were taking part in this Pageant so that people buried in Kilmun graveyard would be remembered.
Leading up to the Pageant, Ann Galliard and Fiona Lochhead came and talked to us about interesting people who are buried in the graveyard. We all had to think of well known people from the past and research their life stories. It was interesting to find out about the famous people in the graveyard.
Eco Week at Luss Primary
The pupils at Luss Primary have recently had their Eco Week. During the week the children took part in many activities which all the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. The activities ranged from finding out about beavers, making dams, taking cuttings from plants, having an eco picnic and going into the local woods. One of the activities they did in the woods was to use materials around them such as moss, leaves, grass, etc. to build a home for a mouse that would keep as much heat in as possible.
