Pupils from Dunoon Primary and Dunoon Grammar are hosting the Argyll & Bute stand at the SLF today and tomorrow.
The theme of the stand this year is our SAL blog and the pupils spent a day training last week which included demonstrating SAL on iPads and learning techniques for engaging with visitors to the stand. They will all be wearing SAL t-shirts and with their deep knowledge of IT and confidence in presenting, we hope they will have a memorable experience at the SLF.

SLF training at Dunoon Grammar
16 pupils from Dunoon Grammar and Dunoon Primary took part in a training day to prepare them for hosting the Argyll & Bute stand at the SLF.
The theme of the stand this year is our SAL blog and the training included demonstrating SAL on iPads and learning techniques for engaging with visitors to the stand.

Join the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for a week to experience the life of an orchestra from the inside. You will have the opportunity to spend time with all the departments of the SCO administration and attend rehearsals and concerts where possible. The SCO offers two placements that each last one week. If you are successful, you will be based at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra offices in Edinburgh. Rothesay Post Card Event
Thank you to everyone who sent postcards for the World Record Postcard Event. These are being passed to Guiness for approval.
The Post Cards will be part of an art instillation at the Cabbie’s Rest in the last weekend of July.

Dunoon Grammar School Head Teacher Mr Shaw retires
Mr Shaw, Head Teacher of Dunoon Grammar School is retiring this summer after 33 years of service to Argyll & Bute Council. Mr Shaw started working for Argyll and Bute Council in Rothesay Academy where he spent 28 years. He was appointed Head Teacher of Dunoon Grammar School in 2008 where he has spent the last 5 years. Head Girl Iona Cairns and Head Boy Andrew Black commented, “In the last 5 years we have got to know Mr Shaw very well and worked closely with him. His warmth and presence will be missed throughout the whole school. We wish him a very long and happy retirement.”
Interplanetary Pioneer – Fergus Glen-Lee
Fergus Glen-Lee from Oban High School has been invited to join Fuselab at Edinburgh University to plan life for future civilizations in the event of an evacuation of Earth.
Fergus saw the avert on SAL for the opportunity for young Scots to join the team made up of business and academia from North West European Communities. Fergus had to demonstrate his creative and divergent thinking to get through the selection process and has been chosen to spend a week at Edinburgh University.

GROWING OUR OWN AT OHS SUPPORT DEPARTMENT!
In October 2012 we took charge of a supersized poly tunnel which was erected in the grounds of Glencruitten Hostel. This was the first step in our plan to grow and sell produce to parents, staff and the hostel kitchen! In our Tech classes we have made six raised beds for the tunnel and plan to make more for outside. We have planted potatoes, onions, herbs and blackcurrants so far and have also been improving the hostel grounds by planting hedges and trees!

Snapberry makes Nature of Scotland awards shortlist
On Tuesday 18th June representatives from the Snapberry group attended a reception at the Scottish Parliament for the RSPB Nature of Scotland 2013 awards. Various groups and individuals were nominated in several categories from across Scotland and Snapberry were absolutely delighted to be placed in the finalists’ shortlist in the Community Initiative category – a real testament to how the project has evolved to include the school, SNH, ArtMap Argyll and the Lantern Parade over the last five years. Rothesay Postcard Event
Pupils at St Andrews Primary, Rothesay are pictured holding just a few of the postcards received over a weekend in May from all over the world.
Well done to everyone who took part in the Postcard to Rothesay World Record Event. Over 400 postcards have been received from as far a field as Japan, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy! More info about the record to follow.
The plan is to have all the postcards on display in the Cabbie’s Rest at Rothesay Pier in late July, actual date to be finalised.

Oban High Pupils Rock Sell Out Crowds!
Last week, a cast of over 40 pupils from Oban High School wowed audiences at the Corran Halls for four nights with their production of We Will Rock You. The musical, written by Queen and Ben Elton celebrates the hits of the eponymous rock band through a futuristic comedy tale.

P7 Induction Days
The P7s from all our Primaries were in High School for 4 days, gettiing to know new friends and experiencing different High School subjects. The theme this year was ‘The Commonwealth’ – pupils started work on this in Primaries. S6 Mentors were a great help throughout the week. Well done all P7s and hope you are looking forward to August!

Lochgilphead High School have had two exciting developments for their Snapberry project in recent weeks.

Campus Eco Schools Success
The Lochgilphead Joint Campus Eco Schools Committee have joined the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening and are reaping the benefits by reaching Level 3 of the organisations Benchmarking Scheme. This was achieved by providing evidence of pupil’s class work, putting a holiday maintenance scheme in place for the campus garden, growing a range of plants (see table by clicking HERE) adopting sustainable gardening practices, using appropriate signs and labels for seedlings & plants in the campus garden and finally showing the pupils in action using all of their gardening skills. Campbeltown Grammar School helps celebrate the Picture House Centenary
To celebrate the centenary of the Picture House in Campbeltown, Home Economics pupils in S1 and S2, studied the history of the Picture House in Campbeltown, using the internet and “The Wee Pictures” website.
Pupils found it fascinating to see the huge changes which have been made over the years, taking into account the changes in society and the impact of technology.
Following their investigations, everyone got their “designer hats” on to come up with ideas for a celebration cake for the event.
