It took loads of careful planning and strategic coordination but the learners and staff at Oban High School raised £2221.89 in just two periods’ time to contribute to Children in Need.
The Haunted House proved once again the most popular event of the afternoon. It was so scary that two pairs of pupils found the “tunnel of darkness” too much to complete! There were no refunds on tickets though as every penny went for this worthy cause. Witches and onesies were the fashion of the day.

Tobermory High School Fundraising Breakfast for Typhoon Haiyan
Moved by the images of Typhoon Haiyan, pupils and staff at Tobermory High School swung into action to organise a fundraising breakfast. Our event on Wednesday raised over £600 for the Disasters Emergency Committee Philippines appeal. Pupils from P1- S6 got together in the canteen to share bacon rolls, and the canteen made a cauldron of delicious porridge. The Traditional Music group provided a rousing accompaniment to the event, and there were games to take part in.

S4 pupil Lorna Unkles achieved the amazing feat of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro over the October break. The ascent of just under 6000m took 8 days, with the climb to the summit being completed in a gruelling 15 hours. Accompanied by her dad, Lorna took on the challenge to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care and has so far accumulated the magnificent total of £4,500.00 with contributions still being accepted through her JustGiving page.

GIRFEC National Competition Winner is Oban High School S4 Student Niamh Macauley
Oban High School S5 pupil Niamh Macauley’s beautifully drawn poster was the winning entry from among hundreds of submissions in the national GIRFEC student competition. Sponsored by the Scottish government’s programme known as Getting It Right For Every Child, the topic for the design competition was “What does well being mean to you?”

Oban High Trad School of Music Winners!
Oban High School Traditional School of Music and Amy Boyce (S5) were successful at the Opportunity Knocks Oban Live Auditions on Saturday to win a place on the big stage at the Oban Hogmanay Street Party. There were 10 acts which were then whittled down to four and those four acts performed once more for the judges who chose our two Oban High School acts. Amy is a singing pupil of Jean Gillies, local singing teacher and the Musical Director of the Traditional School of Music is Sileas Sinclair. This marks another great accomplishment for this talented group of young people at Oban High.

Dalintober PS make ‘Penny Jars’ for local fundraisers
Primary 2 and Primary 5 pupils from Dalintober PS have been busy making ‘Penny Jars’ to be placed in local shops to support two important fundraising ventures in Campbeltown. The pupils created the jars, in conjunction with ‘Explore Campbeltown’ to encourage shoppers to give their loose change to funds being raised for Campbeltown Christmas Lights Group and CGS4Gambia.

Global superstars cause a stir with Dunoon Pupils
Two pupils at Dunoon Grammar School received a very pleasant surprise on returning from the October break, when they were called to the school office to find an envelope waiting for them from pop sensations, One Direction.
Islay’s Success at the Royal National Mod
On Sunday 13th October the Islay school’s choirs and solo competitors travelled to the National Mod in Paisley with high hopes for another successful year at the Mod. Monday 14th was the day for the children’s competition for Gaelic learners, and Islay was extremely well represented in all the medals, with Port Ellen Primary children achieving lots of success. The Gaelic Choir won all their competitions; the Badenoch & Strathspey Area Trophy for the Rural Primary Choral Unison, the Olive Campbell Trophy for the Choral Puirt-a-beul and the Caledonian MacBrayne Trophy for the 2 part harmony. Scots author Alan Bissett visited most of our secondary schools recently, delivering readings and hosting workshops.
The author of Boyracers, Pack Men, Death of a Ladies’ Man and The Incredible Adam Spark, who was brought up in Falkirk, spoke to S3-S6 pupils about what had inspired him to write his books. Alan, born in 1975, had his first novel published in 2001, and has also written two solo plays, a one-woman show and a short documentary, as well as numerous projects in collaboration with other artists. Senior art & design pupils are CAST ACES!
ACES is a major widening participation project at The Glasgow School of Art, funded by the Scottish Funding Council. It encourages S4 – S6 pupils from 90 target schools in the West of Scotland to make informed choices about degree level study in Art & Design and Architecture. Pupils from Campbeltown, Tarbert, Oban and Helensburgh attended two ACES sessions held in Argyll & Bute last week. Sunshine Nurture Group High Tea
The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School, Helensburgh, have been learning all about Katie Morag and her adventures on the Isle of Struay. They have been taking part in lots of activities including creating drama freeze frames of parts of the story, baking yummy shortbread, inventing musical sounds of the sea with a variety of musical instruments and learning a traditional Scottish dance. To celebrate the pupils’ achievements, Grannies and Granddads were invited to The Sunshine Room for a special Scottish High Tea, everyone said they enjoyed their lovely morning at Parklands.

Pupils enthral International Audience
Pupils from Dunoon Grammar School again played a key role at a significant International Reception hosted by Education Scotland at the City Chambers, Glasgow last week. The Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band and Highland Dancers entertained a distinguished audience consisting of educationalists from across the globe, including Scotland’s own Minisiter for Learning and Skills, Alasdair Allan MSP.

Day one at the SLF went tremendously well with lots and lots of visitors to our stand including these two large animals! The pupils involved in day one worked very hard throughout the day engaging with visitors and demonstrating SAL to a huge number of people.
