On the 12th February the fifteenth Annual Lorn Mathsfest was held in Oban High School. Forty-eight S1 pupils and forty-eight P7 pupils from the associated Primary Schools formed teams of four. These teams worked together enthusiastically during the day to solve written and practical maths problems and puzzles. One of the written problems was in French and another was in Gaelic!

Rockfield’s Drovers Monday 27 January 2014
In Rockfield School two classes, P5/4 mainstream and P7/6/5 Gaelic, have worked together to learn about the life of the ancient Drovers in Argyll.
They have worked in partnership with Joyce Gilbert from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Sally Harkness, Storyline Scotland, with both classes following Sally’s world renowned Storyline Approach. It has been a wonderful example of Curriculum for Excellence at its best and a thematic approach to Social Studies.

Oban Gaelic Medium Pupils Scoop Television Quiz Prize
Two pupils from Rockfield Primary School’s Gaelic medium classes in Oban are to appear on BBC Alba’s Gleusta children’s quiz programme next week.
Calum Garvin and Calum McLuckie were P6 pupils when the programme was recorded in June 2013 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye. They competed successfully in a series of challenges against contestants from Tollcross Primary School in Edinburgh and returned with a trophy to present to their school. The Drovers
Mrs. Watson’s P5/4 and Mrs.Kersel’s P5/6/7Gaelic classes have been learning about the Drovers in the 1700s. Using a new storyline being piloted for Storyline Scotland and the Royal Scottish Geographical Society the classes have followed the journey of two young teenage boys, Rob and Angus, on their first Drove. Engagement with the characters has brought the story to life for the pupils as they learned about sheiling life, hardships on the drove and the joys of the Tryst.

Rockfield Nursery, Children in Need
The children at Rockfield Nursery, both English and Gaelic sessions held a pyjama/spotty day for Children in Need. Parents were invited in to buy spotty cakes and we raised a total of £123.84
Christmas Carpentry at Sandbank Primary School
Primary 3 (Mainstream and Gaelic) and GM 6/7 from Sandbank Primary School are using their woodwork skills to transform a square of wood into a star with the minimum of wasted material. GM 6/7 have proved themselves to be responsible and trustworthy therefore they are making their stars as an independent mini-topic whenever they have a spare moment of the day. The younger pupils get their instruction during their Friday afternoon activity lessons.

Sandbank Primary School – Act of Remembrance
On Monday the 11th of November 2013 Sandbank Primary School’s senior pupils in mainstream and Gaelic held an Armistice Service attended by the junior pupils, pre-five unit and staff. The older children had all walked down to the War Memorial at Lazaretto Point the previous week and researched the history behind it. They discovered plaques from both the 1st and 2nd World Wars detailing the names and roles of local men who lost their lives in conflict.

Primary 2/3 at the Mull Mod
Primary 2/3 had great fun performing at the Mod. They sang ‘The Farmer’s in His Den,’ and were lucky enough to gain 2nd place!

Port Charlotte at Mod Dhalriada

On the 21st of September we went to the Lochgilphead Mòd for a day trip. The choir went to sing in the unison competition and the puirt a beul. We came third in the unison competition and in the puirt a beul we came joint first along with Bowmore Primary School.
P1-3 Gaelic Katie Morag Day on the Isle of Tiree
Primary 1-3 Gaelic had a lovely Katie Morag afternoon to round off their Katie Morag theme last Thursday at Tiree Primary. Parents and family were invited (especially Grannies!) to watch and listen to the children display their work and we also had a very unexpected guest who just had time to squeeze in reading one our favourite Katie Morag stories! The children showed off their Katie Morag puppets and read some of their imaginary Katie Morag stories before leading their parents on a tour of their work. We hope Granny Mainland made her way to the Isle of Struay for her holidays!
Total Green School Awards 2013
The pupils and staff at Lochdonhead Primary School are delighted to hear that they are the winners of the Totally Active category for Scotland in the Total Green School Awards 2013. Our entry was about all the work we have done in our school grounds over the last year. We had to decide what we wanted to do with our grounds, work out how to achieve it, and we have ended up with a ‘story glen’ based on an old Gaelic tale ‘Iolaire Loch Treig’.

Port Charlotte learn about the Lords of the Isles
On Thursday the 16th of May Port Charlotte School went on an excellent trip to Finlaggan and Dunyveg. P5/6/7 went with Mr Mackie, Mrs MacTaggart, Mrs McLellan and Mrs Coughlin. We went because our topic is the Lords of the Isles and we wanted to know more about them.
We found out that the Lords of the Isles were only MacDonalds, they could not be MacLeans. Women couldn’t be Lords of the Isles either in those days. They ruled right down the west coast.

Southend and Saint Columba
Pupils in P4-7 have been learning about Southend’s connection with Saint Columba as part of local celebrations to mark 1450 years since the saint landed in Scotland from Ireland. With local amateur historians they visited the site of the Saint’s footsteps. The choir performed a Gaelic song at the annual Saint Columba Conventicle also held at the footsteps.
Gaelic Pupils Explore for Dragons at Dunollie
Children in Oban’s Gaelic-medium P1 and P2 classes experienced a fabulous day of exploration and outdoor learning recently, organised by Stramash. The activities were linked to the children’s Knights and Castles topic, and the day started at Dunollie Castle with a scavenger hunt. The natural materials the children collected were used to make special crowns, and other activities included creating dragon potions and exploring the castle itself.

Film G Winners!
Congratulations to Ms McDonald’s S4 Film G team. ‘Tha an t-acras gam tholladh’ won the Film G Theme Award category for the film that interprets the FilmG theme – ‘Hunger/Desire’ – in the most original, engaging and inspirational way. Lochdonhead playgound development
The pupils of Lochdonhead Primary School have planned, resourced, gained funding, and overseen the development of their school playground, creating a story glen, based on an old Gaelic tale, Iolaire Loch Treig. The pupils have worked with various artists and they are even working with pupils in a secondary school in Harrogate, who are designing wooden story boards based on our children’s designs.
We now have a fantastic imaginative play area, including a willow dome with tunnels, a willow cave and a log ringed area.
BBC visit Rockfield
The children in the Gaelic classes in Rockfield got a huge surprise last Monday when a crew from the BBC turned up at the school! The pupils had taken part in some filming for Gaelic television programme “Dè a nis?” earlier this year and were delighted to be told by the television presenters that out of 16 schools, the pupils from Rockfield were the fastest on space hoppers! Lorn Mathsfest 2013
On the 12th February the Annual Lorn Mathsfest was held in Oban High School. Forty-eight S1 pupils were joined by forty-eight P7 pupils from the associated Primary Schools. The pupils worked in teams of four. To be successful team work was as important as mathematical ability. The Assembly Hall was a hive of activity as the pupils attempted to solve maths problems and puzzles throughout the day, one of which was in French or one in Gaelic!
Come dine with us – Sandbank Primary
Monday 25th February saw GMU 1/2 of Sandbank Primary produce their own version of “Come dine with us”
During the previous five weeks the boys and girls had chosen a menu to serve to a group of adults. The starter was roast butternut squash and chicken salad. This was followed by individual meatloaves served with mashed potatoes, broccoli and a courgette bake. To finish off they chose an apple and blackberry tart, served with cream or custard.
