P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 1st April 2022

Good afternoon. P1 have been very busy this week. In Literacy we learned the ur and er sounds and red word what. We wrote words, created a spelling flower, played roll and read and snakes and ladders. In writing we worked in pairs to create an acrostic poem all about Easter.

In Numeracy we have been counting in 2s. We have enjoyed singing and dancing along to Jack Hartmann’s song. Click on the link below to listen

We have also been learning about subtraction and different strategies to help us. We have been using Numicon, rekenreks, counters and ten frames and our number lines.

This week we have been exploring all things Easter. We created Easter chick cards, line patterned bunnies, sequenced the Easter story and created patterned Easter eggs in the tuff spot. On Thursday afternoon we made chocolate nests. We had to melt the chocolate which started as a solid, then mix in rice crispies and lastly scoop them into our case. We then got to add some eggs. On Friday we thoroughly enjoyed our Easter themed digi day. We worked together to create towers which we could balance eggs on, made a car which could transport eggs, fed teddy the right number of Easter eggs and tried to make something Easter related on Scratch junior. P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 25th March 2022

Good afternoon.

In Literacy we have learned the sounds ‘aw’ and ‘are’. We played ‘aw’ snakes and ladders, ‘are’ roll and read, taught ted how to write ‘aw’, looked for ‘are’ words in a story and word search. In writing we wrote an acrostic poem about our mums.

In Maths we explored subtraction. First of all, we looked at subtraction within 10 then we started to look at subtraction within 20. We used Numicon, number lines, counters and playdough to help us. We found the missing number in subtraction sentences using playdough, got our bus to school by answering subtracting within 10 questions, practised our counting backwards and played Robot Less than on the computers.

We explored the story of the Hungry Caterpillar on Monday. We looked at the different stages in a butterfly’s life cycle, sequenced the story using pictures and learned how to draw a butterfly. This week we have explored Spring. We brainstormed what we knew about spring, played spring bingo, I Spy and created blossom tree paintings. On Friday we had assembly. It was Primary 2/1’s assembly and it was all about Mother’s day. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 18th March 2022

Good Afternoon.

In Literacy we have learned the split diagraph sounds ‘o-e’ and ‘u-e’ We taught ted how to write ‘o-e’ words, played roll and read, wrote u-e words, played u-e words snakes and ladders. For writing we worked in partners and wrote spring acrostic poems.

In Maths this week we continued to explore number bonds to 20. We used double sided counters and ten frames to help us. We matched ice cream to their partner cone to show bonds to 20, played number bonds to 20 bus stop and completed the missing number bonds on stars. We also explored odd and even numbers using Numicon.

This week was British Science week. On Monday we explored the life cycle of a bee. A bee starts out as an egg, then larva, then pupa and finally a bee. On Tuesday we had our P7 STEM leaders down to help us in an activity called Handy Gardener. We have planted five different seeds in a glove. We planted a broad bean, cress, chives, spinach and radishes. On Wednesday and Thursday, we watched a video all about dinosaurs from the National Museum of Scotland. It told us all about dinosaurs. We then drew our favourite dinosaur and found out what they like to eat, how long or tall they were and when they lived. We made our very own Pterodactyl peg. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

Gracie- “I loved Gym. I liked learning the new star game.”

Leo – “I liked learning about the superheroes in the house corner.”

Aaron – “I loved learning the new games and playing in the hall and playing the mushroom game with the parachute.”

Matthew- “In gym we made a mushroom with the parachute. We went under it.”

Emily – “I made a bee with playdough. I liked Gym.”

Angus – “I liked playing in the tuff tray. I was learning about bees and playing with other people.”

Finlay – “I enjoyed doing PE. It is my favourite! I liked red light, green light. I was the traffic light and a car. In stars and catchers, I was the catcher!”

Ishanvi – “I liked the assembly because we were having red nose day.”

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 11th March 2022

Good afternoon. In Literacy we have learned the split diagraph sounds ‘a-e’ and ‘i-e’ We taught ted how to write ‘a-e’ words, looked for ‘a-e’ words in a picture, played roll and read, read then drew i-e words and played ‘i-e’ snakes and ladders. For writing we worked in partners and wrote superhero acrostic poems.

In Maths this week we have been exploring number bonds to 20. We looked at different strategies for helping us to find number bonds to 20 such as making 10 first. We used rekenreks, counters, number spinners and Numicon to help us make then write down our number bonds to 20. We also played a matching rainbow game where we had to find the pot of gold to match the number at the start of the rainbow.

On Tuesday afternoon we went to the discovery den where our P7 STEM leaders led us in some very exciting activities around the topic of nature. We looked for birds, sorted fish into different categories, explored rocks, sifted soil, sand, salt and sugar out of water and used Scratch junior on the I Pads to make an animal move. In the class we made superhero stick puppets, drew a picture of our superhero helping someone stuck in the snow and discussed people who help us. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 4th March 2022

Good afternoon

In Literacy we have learned the long vowel sounds ‘ea’ and ‘oi’ We taught ted how to write ‘ea’ words, looked for ‘ea’ words in a story, played roll and read and ‘oi’ snakes and ladders. We also sorted ‘oi’ words into real and nonsense. For writing we wrote about our everyday heroes. The link to the sway with our completed Superhero Adventures has been posted on Seesaw.

In Maths this week we have continued exploring halving and looked at quarters. We made the missing fractions with our playdough, coloured in shapes to show halves, built doubles towers then halved and quartered them. We also used our rekenreks to explore number bonds to 20.

In our superhero learning we designed vehicles for our superheroes and used kinetic sand to build superhero buildings. We also looked at Fairtrade again this week and designed our own Fairtrade lunches. Thursday was World Book Day and we enjoyed lots of book related activities. We enjoyed listening to MC Grammar’s Reading is Amazing rap and trying to guess the books that he mentioned. We shared our favourite storybook, took part in LVPS presents the Masked Reader where we had to guess which teacher was reading and which story they were reading. It was great fun and we earned lots of house points. Some of us also did a book scavenger hunt, designed our own bookmarks and front covers for our favourite books. P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 25th February 2022

Good afternoon,

In Literacy we have been revising our long vowel sounds ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, or, air, ar, ir, ou and oy. We have revised our red words too. We have written words with these sounds, looked for words in stories, played roll and read, snakes and ladders and made the words on our magnetic boards. In writing we completed our superhero stories and look forward to sharing these soon.

In Maths this week we have been exploring halving. We cut and folded shapes to show halves, halved buttons on snowmen, decorated sandcastles by halving the amount of objects and created paper pizzas.

We have been exploring forces and superhero potions in our afternoons. We explored push and pull forces and how things move. The boys were making ramps with the bricks for their toy cars. We painted using cars in the tuff spot too. For Health and Wellbeing, we listened to the My Many Coloured Days by Dr Seuss. We drew pictures to demonstrate our feelings by choosing a colour to suit our emotions. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 18th February 2022

What a busy but short week for P1. In Literacy we have learned the ‘oy’ long vowel sound and the red word be. We have written words with ‘oy’, built words on our magnetic boards, played roll and read and connect 5.

In Maths this week we have been exploring sharing and grouping. We looked at and can now explain what is meant by a fair share. We played make it fair, created a fair share picnic for our teddies, completed chilli challenges where we had to sit frogs equally on logs and helped Dan, Dom and Dora the dragons share out their gems fairly.

We have been continuing to think and learn about superheroes. We drew our superheroes, wrote superhero names and phrases on fabric to decorate our superhero den, discussed characteristics of a superhero and made superhero potions. A few of the girls watched a draw a long and drew their own Elsa pictures.  Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 11th February 2022

In Literacy we have learned the ‘ir’ and ‘ou’ long vowel sounds and the red word call. We have written words with ‘ir’ and ‘ou’, built words on our magnetic boards, played roll and read and sorted real and nonsense words. In writing we wrote an adventure story featuring our superhero.

In Maths this week we have explored reading and writing half past times on an analogue and digital clock. We wrote o’clock and half past times on a digital clock, read half past times on a digital and analogue clock and in words to complete jigsaws, played an o’clock and half past board game and bingo.

For Children’s Mental Health week we listened to the story The Dot. We discussed our strengths and drew pictures of these on dots. We also watched the short film Boundin’ and explored times when we have felt up and times when we have felt down. We created hot air balloons to show the times when we have felt up.  Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 4th February 2022

Good afternoon

In Literacy we have learned the ‘or’ and ‘air’ long vowel sounds and the red word want. We have written words with ‘or’ and ‘air’, built words on our magnetic boards, played roll and read and sorted real and nonsense words. In writing we wrote a description of our superhero.

In Maths this week we have explored reading and writing o’clock times on an analogue and digital clock. We looked at reading half past times on an analogue clock too. We found matching times, made our own clocks, solved time jigsaws and played stop the clock on the netbooks.

We have been exploring the theme of superheroes through our play. We looked at how we get day and night, sorted activities into the right category and made superhero potions in the tuff spot. We also watched Emily MacKenzie who is an author and illustrator read her story ‘There’s Broccoli in my Ice Cream’ and she taught us how to draw Granville. In P.E we have been doing gymnastics and have explored a variety of shapes and rolls.  Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

P1 Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 28th January 2022

Another busy week for Primary 1. In Literacy we have learned the ‘oo’ and ‘ar’ long vowel sounds and the red word like. We have written words with ‘oo’ and ‘ar’, built words on our magnetic boards, played roll and read and snakes and ladders and sorted real and nonsense words. In writing we wrote a description of one of our favourite characters from a book, Arnie from Arnie the Doughnut.

In Maths this week we have continued with exploring time. We learned the seasons, the months of the year and how to tell o’clock times on an analogue clock. We sorted the months of year, cut and stuck the months of the year down in the correct order, explored the hands on an analogue clock and made o’clock times using playdough and clock mats.

On Tuesday we learned about Robert Burns and took an interactive virtual tour of his house. We discussed the differences between his house and our houses. On Thursday afternoon we became superheroes. We chose our superhero name, super power and what we use our super power for. Some of the children used alliteration to create their super hero name.
