This year, through the participatory budget, our children chose to buy items to design their own nurturing space within their clan. This is a safe space that would be accessible to all pupils when they need it. Some clans chose to create a sensory space, others chose to make a comfortable seating area. All nurturing spaces are used to support children to self-regulate, they chose items which were calming including lights, comfortable cushions, tents, and activities such as sensory/fidget toys or books.

Calderwood Compliments:
- On our inservice day this week, all our champs took part in outdoor learning training from Love Outdoor Learning as part of our school improvement plan. A huge thank you to our Parent Council for paying for this training and a subscription to resources for us from the Magic Miles 2022 fundraising pot! Without the support, this opportunity would not have been available to us and we can see the impact on the clans already this week. Thank you.
- This week we received a child protection audit from West Lothian Council, which highlighted that all our paperwork and processes were correct with no points for improvement. Our Pupil Council reported that:
- staff look after them and make them feel safe : “all staff are approachable”
- an ethos of community and kindness within the school: ”We don’t just take care of ourselves, we take care of each other”
- they have at least one trusted ‘champion’. They spoke about other ways they can share worries such as emotional check-ins, worry monsters, worry boxes etc.
- school helps them look after their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing through HWB lessons, assemblies and activities
- they learn about keeping themselves safe by using online, bonfire/firework, road and personal safety strategies.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend!

FAQs
Can additional adult tickets be purchased?
Rookie Rockstars is a whole school event and is open for all families with pupils from P1-P7 to attend. At this moment, one adult ticket per family can be purchased. This is to ensure that all families in the school have the opportunity to attend the concert. The staff of Rookie Rockstars will host the concert and normally only hold 1 concert event. To accommodate the size of our school, they have kindly agreed to hold 2 concerts. After the 10th May, we will look at the number of tickets that have been purchased and pupils performing in the concert across the two nights. We will then be able to identify available spaces against the capacity of the arena. Any additional tickets will be released after 10th May. Communication will be made by the school regarding the arrangements for this. We appreciate you support with this.
Pipe Band Gala Day Celebration
As part of our East Calder Gala Celebrations, Housebuilder Robertson Homes has organised for the Glencorse Pipe Band to attend Calderwood Primary School. On Friday 19th May, the band will play a Beat Retreat in our school playground as the pupils are collected from school for the holiday weekend. A Beat Retreat denotes the end of the working day and marks the end of another week of hard work by all of our pupils. The band will begin to play at 11:55am and continue until 12:15pm.
Robertson Homes is sponsoring the pipe bands which will be playing at the East Calder Gala Day on 10th June. Robertson wanted to give all our pupils, staff, parents and carers a sneak preview of what to expect by organising this special event for us. Calderwood Primary is thankful for this exciting opportunity.

Championing Coding: National Robotarium
The Bens had a phenomenal opportunity to take a trip to the newly-opened National Robotarium. Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers had the most amazing day being ambassadors for our school, showing off their robotics and coding knowledge, and exploring new AI technologies.
Please see the Sway created by Ben Lomond all about their trip:
