Glendevon Term 1!

We have had a very busy term.  We have been settling in and getting to know each other and getting into a routine with all our activities. We have been learning about night and day for our topic. We  made some night time sensory bottles using food colouring, glitter and stars and also painted some day and night pictures using paint. All the children have enjoyed some stories about day and night and also some multisensory sessions with a day a night theme.

We have also been looking for signs of Autumn by going on local walks to collects leaves.  We used our leaves to make a collage in art and we also enjoyed multisensory Autumn themes too. We have  been getting into the Halloween spirit a little early with the upcoming break.  We have had messy play with pumpkins and slime and also made pictures using Halloween stickers!  We have some more Halloween fun when welcome back to look forward to as well.

What a busy start to the year! We are looking forward to a rest and reset, ready to start back for another action packed term!

Lammermuir Term 1

We have had a busy start to our year in nursery.  We have been to Space with our topic where we shared interactive stories, used our sensory tuff tray and made some space themed goodies during cooking activities.  In art we made some flying saucers and decorated our own planets using a salad spinner.

We went for an autumn walk to collect some pinecones, fallen leaves and twigs to use in class as part of our autumn theme.  In cooking we made some muffins and some shortbread biscuits which we cut into pumpkin shapes.  We also explored our sensory tray with some scented oranges and cinnamon sticks.

Group 1 Swimming 🏊

Well done to our first group of swimmers who just completed their block at Bathgate Xcite.

They worked so hard, gaining confidence and developing skills in the early stages of buoyancy, co-ordination, spatial awareness, breathing, and entering and leaving the pool safely.

3 swimmers achieved their Beatlie Aqua Bronze Award and 1 swimmer was presented with a Beatlie Swimming Progress Award. Well done everyone ⭐ we are so proud of you 😊

Term 1 Secondary PE

On Monday afternoons athletes in Ochiltree and Duntarvie have been coming together to develop their physical activity and motor skills.

After a fun warm-up altogether, we split into 3 groups:
  • Striking & kicking activities (based on the Special Olympics Motor Activity Training Programme) with Louise
  • Music & movement (using activities from Physiobods and the MOVE programme) with Jill
  • Boccia & New Age Kurling (focusing on teamwork) with Rachael

Then we finish off with a whole group cool down and relax.

Global Goals Week @ Beatlie

Last week we held our Global Goals Week highlighting the 3 Goals we will be working toward over the year.

This year we will be highlighting the following Global Goals:

GG3: Good Health & Wellbeing

Some of us made smoothies and/ or fruit salads, we all participated in physical activities and daily story massage.

GG12: Responsible Consumption

Beatlie display great responsibility with their consumption and we daily participate in recycling daily recyclables and through our art and craft activities we enjoy upcycling something from school to make something new. Some of us had fun taking part in these activities over the week.

GG15: Life on Land

We enjoyed fun participating in a Biodiversity Hunt in the garden finding bug hotels, hedgehog house etc. We also got messy making Bird Feeders and doing some gardening as well as making the most of the weather and observing nature all around us while going on community walks.

ASN Fun Run

Today 4 of our athletes represented Beatlie at the ASN Fun Run at Cedarbank School.

The boys took part in the 0.5km walk/run  🏃‍♂️‍➡️ and placed 4th, 9th and 12th out of 20 competitors.

In the 1km wheelchair race our female athlete came 1st!! 🥳

We are super proud of them as this was a really busy event with lots of new faces and an unfamiliar route.

Welcome back Glendevon

Hi everyone and welcome back to the new school year – I know it is going to be an amazing year.  We have lots of exciting activities planned including being back at RDA for horse riding and sensory sessions with Tonto.  Sensology and topic time as well as multi-sensory drama and lots of messy art activities to start the term off.

I look forward to popping some photos showing all our adventures in learning journals and will give an update every term to share our learning.

Just a wee reminder that staff working in Glendevon this year are:

Julie, Kerri, Millie, Linda, Rowia and Hazel. We hope to meet all our families throughout the year at special events and cafes.

Duntarvie Class – A New Chapter!

Wow – what a term!

It has been an absolute privilege, Duntarvie!

I can’t believe we only have a few days of term together, and we will be turning the last page of one chapter, and starting another.

Two of our senior pupils are soon off to pastures new.  We wish them a very fond farewell, and all the best of everything for the future. While we will miss them both dearly, we know we have so many memories to cherish, and we are so very proud of them, for the wonderful young adults they have become, and for all their many, many achievements!

This term, our two S6 pupils completed their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, as well as SQA awards in Preparing for Adult Life, and – alongside two of our S4 pupils – an SQA award in Nature and the Environment. We have been incredibly busy planting, growing and nurturing, completing this qualification, and working in partnership with our other local schools for the ‘Growing Together’ community garden project. We’ve produced some beautiful flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables and we’ve made many new friends along the way. It’s helped that we’ve had so many sunny days, which has meant that we’ve had some lovely outdoor long walks too.

As part of transition into young adult life, our leavers have also been having lots of fun out attending young adults’ social groups in Broxburn, at the Albyn football club, and at Craigsfarm cafe. We’ve also had a ball as usual at Musically Active Dudes, and one of our S4 pupils even had a wee taster session here too. It’s been brilliant forging links with young adults from Pinewood and Ogilivie schools. We’ve supported each other along the way, and Pinewood even invited our leavers along to Prom, which was an honour for everyone involved.  We also got to see Pinewood’s summer fayre and senior school pop up shop in action, and watch our new friends do a sterling job! What’s lovely too, is that we realised some of our S6’s, and some leavers from Ogilvie, had actually been at nursery together, so it’s so fitting to be coming together again as we support our young adults to embark together on their new adventures!

Our two S4 pupils have been super busy out in the community, working towards their award for learning in new environments. We’ve been practising communication skills and gaining independence at the library, the local gym, the swimming pool, and the nearby supermarkets. Our S3 pupil has also attained her ASDAN Transition Challenge award, so we have all had a very successful term of attainment indeed!

The end of this term also marks the end of a very special lady’s time at Beatlie school. One of our wonderful APSWs, the lovely Jacqueline, who has touched the lives of so many during her time here, is retiring. Jacqueline, it will simply not be the same without you, but you have taught us all so much, adults and young people alike, that you certainly won’t be forgotten, and we will carry on with the same warmth and love that you have brought to the Beatlie family over the many years you have been here.

A big thank you from team Duntarvie to all our amazing families for making our job ever more rewarding, and for your fabulous young people. As ever, a huge thank you to all our nurses for keeping us safe and well, to all our therapists, to our awesome clown doctors and our much loved dance therapist, Charan. Thank you also to the adults at Eliburn Day Centre and New Directions, who will soon be welcoming our two S6 learners – you have been working so very hard to get to know our absolute stars and we know they are in good hands.

Congratulations to our Grads! Good luck, and keep in touch!

And lastly, a  very warm welcome to our three new Duntarvie senior students. We are so excited to learn and make new memories together!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL,

Rachael and team Duntarvie x
