WOW what a busy start to term 1 in Duntarvie we can’t believe it will be the October break next week!

We have been exploring garden maintenance this term and keeping Duntarvie garden clean and tidy through weeding, cutting the grass and leaf blowing.  We prepared the new kitchen garden area by upcycling some old tyres and compost from last year’s planting. We have already planted the seeds in the warmth of indoors and hope by the time Spring arrives we will have some lovey (hardy) herbs to plant outside.

To support our independence, develop our life skills and explore sensory development we have been completing class jobs including washing the windows, cleaning and putting away the dishes and sorting the laundry. Many of us have loved the new light weight hoover that we use to keep our class nice and tidy and it has even ventured round the school to ensure everyone is keeping their rooms nice and tidy!

A favourite class activity this term has been the sensory story of Boris the Bee – he has been a bit naughty by sneaking into the picnic basket and giving everyone a nasty sting!

It has been great to have new opportunities through our individual SQA work. This is the cooking group making all their health goodies to go home to parents and carers.  We are hoping to get out and about in the community more through further ASDAN and SQA work alongside starting our Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

World Food Day 2021 Theme, Activities, Quotes, Slogan and Wishes

WORLD FOOD DAY 2021

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on the 16th October; the date that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FOA) was founded in 1945. First commemorated by the FOA in 1979, World Food Day aims to promote healthy diets and eradicate hunger issues by 2030.

Themes

World Food Day adopts a new theme every year, with previous themes including Family Farming (2014) and Our Actions are our Future (2018).

The theme for 2021 is ‘Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow’ which stresses that production and consumption of safe food have “immediate and long-term benefits for people, the planet, and the economy.”

 

Beatlie will be raising awareness by participating in a poster competition – keep an eye out for the great work our pupils will produce!

Well I can’t believe we are almost at the end of term 1 already!!

Lomond

Lomond Class Term 1

Wow, we can hardly believe we are approaching the end of the first term already! What a busy one it has been. We have used the story of The 3 Little Pigs as a theme for lots of our learning this term. This has included learning about different types of materials and taking part in some construction activities. We have also enjoyed acting out the story and especially listening to the big, bad wolf as he “huffs” and “puffs”.

World Smile Day 1st October 2021

Lots of pupils and staff dressed in yellow for World Smile Day on Friday and we raised £90 for Carers of West Lothian. Thanks to all parents and staff who contributed.

Classess all celebrated in different ways – some looking for smile emojis during a local walk, others making some smile themed art and one class having a relaxing footspa all at the same time since this is an activty that makes them all smile!

Community Litter Pick

This week Beatlie participated in their first litter pick of the new school session and can I just say…….

I think we could be out of a job! What a fantastic improvement in the area all thanks to the local community coming together over the past year or so to make improvements to the local environment and we have noticed – WELL DONE.

As we know the problem of litter will not be eradicated and we will continue to support the school, Craigshill and beyond to do our bit to reduce the impact on the climate!

Thank you to all the staff and pupils for participating and doing their best on what turned out to be a beautiful day to tackle the litter.

We will keep you posted for the next one, meanwhile enjoy having a look at our fantastic team working hard.

Summer term Music

After several months of delivering music lessons live and online via Teams and YouTube, it was good to swap the living room for the classroom again this term. While the children were mostly engaged during lessons shown on the smartboard, there was a pleasing positive response to us being back in the same classroom again. The music and activities are more immediate and alive and there is more scope to adapt activities, depending on responses and interests. 

This term we began by consolidating some of the songs and action activities from before that had become familiar over the smartboard. We then added new ones focusing on steady beats (Sugarplum Fairy), on fast and slow (Hare and Tortoise) and then on high and low (Five Little Froggies). We ended the term by improvising music together using some of the recently acquired instruments such as bass bars (wooden bass chime bars) and wooden tongue drums. We have also had more 1-1 music sessions that complement the work of Aisling, our music therapist. 

The newer instruments were ordered in conjunction with Aisling, and due to not being able to be in the school, some are only now getting used by us. We look forward to being able to use them more next term.  

Ochiltree

Ochiltree 2020/21

What a year!

Despite all the restrictions and changes over the past year we have managed to survive and cope tremendously well with a new way of life in Beatlie.

The children in Ochiltree adapted so well and have shown a great determination to develop and build on their skills as well as have fun in all the different activities new and old.

The Ochiltree team has had lots to deal with and we came together and enjoyed supporting the children to work on their independence skills and communication. Over the year you have witnessed how impressive they have been.

We have also had lots to do with Learning for Sustainability and helping out in the community which has been vitally important in this climate. The children all helped to start and maintain a vegetable garden producing vegetables used in our recipe book and cooking the different dishes as part of our Connectng Classrooms project with schools in Africa. We have also planted lots of flowers to encourage diversification and they are beginning to bloom with the summer sun.

There are so many moments I would love to share with you but I don’t know where I would stop. Please have a look at our video which gives just a short peek into life in Ochiltree.
