Probability and Persuasion in Primary 6

This week Primary 6 have been investigating probability with some games and data handling tasks. Some children chose to do their tasks outside in the sunshine and others preferred to stay inside in the shade. Lovely to have that choice while we learn at home.

We continued to develop our skills in persuasive writing by creating an advert for a product of our choice and use language that would entice someone to buy that product.

We have also been learning about the next stage in the Wars of Independence with the Battle of Falkirk,  which was not too far away in distance. The children researched some of the weapons and armour used during this period in history to create diagrams, a scratch animation advert and to design their own weapon that would have been more successful for the Scots in this battle.

Well done Primary 6 we enjoyed seeing your creativity this week.

P5

Since returning from the summer holidays we have been very busy. We have been learning about shale mining in Broxburn and we looked at the Burngrange mining disaster.

Max – the Burngrange disaster happened 71 years ago.

Lucas – the disaster happened in West Calder

Mirin – 15 men lost their lives.

Daniel – one of the men died at the exit to the mine.

Connor – 2 of the men were brothers.

Paula – a giant explosion and fire caused the disaster and parts of the mine to collapse.

We have learned lots of information and created art work, job adverts, PowerPoints, mind maps and newspaper reports all about shale mining and the disaster.

We are now going to be learning about natural disaster.  We can’t wait!

Primary 7 Library Visit

Today Primary 7 took a trip to the local library to learn about the history of WW2. During our visit Diane gave us a detailed talk about WW2. We learned lots of interesting information and even got to see and hold a helmet that the soldiers might have worn.

Lewis learned that American solider worn camouflage helmets and the British soldiers had plain green helmets.

Sophie learned lots about children during WW2. Children had to be evacuated to the countryside; Devon and Cornwall were the most common places to be evacuated to. Often it was the children’s teachers who took them to the countryside.

Ryan learned that children who were evacuated only got to take one suitcase, had to wear a placard and carry a gas mask at all times.

Rosie learned that all people in Britain had to carry an identity card so that they could be identified if a bomb dropped.

Lewis B learned that some people had Morrison Shelters in their homes. These looked like a cage and would be used if the family could not get to the Air Raid shelter.

Ellie learned that in London people used Tube Stations as an Air Raid shelter.

Matthew learned that during the Blitz there were wardens that went round the houses to check everyone had their lights outs.

Hannah learned that the British flew large silver balloons shaped like airplanes to distract the German bombers.

Chariot Challenge

Miss Crease and Miss Woods were extremely impressed by the hard work and effort that went into our homework challenge.  We used lots of household recycled materials to create Roman chariots as part of our class topic.  We enjoyed explaining to our classmates how we made them.  Finlay even made a Circus Maximus!

Owen’s grandad kindly provided a Roman soldier’s outfit to show the class.  Owen felt like a real gladiator!

Thank you to all family members for helping your children to create such amazing masterpieces!  We will be showcasing these to P4 on Friday morning.

A piece of history in our very own classroom!

This week in class we have been learning about the Roman army, so Miss Woods brought in a replica of a real Roman soldier’s helmet.  Some of us were lucky enough to try it on.  Brandon and Sarah said that it was very heavy.  We understand now how strong the Roman soldiers had to be, as not only did they wear a helmet, they also wore a suit of armour and had to carry weapons, a shield and personal belongings.

Learning is fun at the local library!

Primaries 3 and 3/2 visited Broxburn library to find out about our new topic The Romans.  The friendly librarian, Diane, prepared posters which included lots of interesting information about life in Roman times.  Diane was dressed up as a Roman and she invited Ehlana and Sean to dress up too.  They wore a toga and a head piece made from a plant.  Traditionally, Romans wore sandals with laces tied around their legs.  We enjoyed our visit to the library and Diane made the learning fun!  We brought books and posters back to school to continue our learning.  This is going to be a great topic!
