Spring has Sprung

100,000+ Best Free Summer Images in HD

Hello to everyone and a warm welcome to all our new children and parents.   Here is a little update of what our little learners have been up to.  It’s certainly been a very busy time in nursery with lots of fun and exciting activities taking place.  The children have been learning all about spring and have embraced having the opportunity to share their knowledge, thoughts and feelings to develop their learning further.  The children loved working as a little team to tidy and prepare their garden for Spring/summer.  It has been wonderful to see our little learners work collaboratively and take pride in their garden.  We have also been busy planting sunflowers and the children were delighted to plant some strawberry plants which they have been taking good care of.  The children enjoyed taking a closer look at the plants and discovered all plants and flowers have roots.  This was a fantastic opportunity for us to learn more about the biology of a plant. After lots of interesting discussion with the children we decided to create our very own garden centre, this was a great extension of their learning.  It was wonderful to hear and see the children share their own experiences and come up with lots of ideas for the garden centre.  The garden centre shop provided the children with lots of fantastic learning experiences covering all curricular areas.  The children were observed engaging in some amazing imaginary role play using a good range of language and increasing vocabulary.  The children absolutely loved using the scales and the till which encouraged the children to use lots of mathematical language too.   Everyone has also had the opportunity to make their own sunflowers using lots of natural resources.  It’s been wonderful to see children produce their own individual art work they have displayed great creativity, we certainly have very creative children at St Nicholas ELC.   It has been lovely to see children embrace lots of learning opportunities.  Well done everyone!

Here are a just few photos of what our little learners have been up to over the Spring period.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all and a very warm welcome to all our new children and families who have recently started at St Nicholas Nursery. What a fantastic start to the year it has been.

All the children have been very busy this week learning and experiencing lots of new and exciting things.   Some of the children have been chatting about castles and palaces, so here are a few pictures showing some of their creative work –

Helping to build and set up a castle with a fort.

What talented boys and girls we have in our nursery.

All the children have settled back into their little routines since coming back after the Christmas holidays.
I wonder what exciting adventures we will get up to next week, watch this space.

321…Blast Off

The children  had a great time this week role playing within our space theme.  They were pretending to be astronauts and aliens and had fun playing in our phone booth, which was transformed into a rocket.   They have also been very busy constructing their own rockets with blocks and other construction toys .  In the art area they have been making rockets using 2D shapes and staff have been encouraging the children to name the shapes while they were creating their pictures.   We have been reading space related stories to the children, watching astronauts floating about in space stations and rockets taking off on the smart board.  Story spoons (aliens love underpants), were put out to encourage the children to create their own stories through play.  It’s been a busy and fun filled week.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

The children in the ELC have had a great week celebrating Halloween. They came to nursery dressed up in amazing costumes, took party in party games, went Dookin for apples and made some spooky arts and crafts. Here are just some of the activities they took part in.

This week in our ELC

Our Week in St Nicholas ELC

It’s been another fantastic week for everyone at St Nichols ELC.  There has been lots of amazing learning and lots of new and exciting discoveries made.  The children are continuing to do amazing at establishing routines and it’s wonderful to see them feeling comfortable and secure within the ELC environment.

Whilst playing in the outdoor area the children have noted that we have a family of birds, they have enjoyed observing the birds and there’s been lots of interesting conversation about the family of birds.  The children have been feeding the birds and taking good care of them.  The children also noted some seasonal change which they have enjoyed chatting about during mat time.  There has been lots of interesting observations made such as; feeling colder and leaves falling from the trees.  Through lots of interesting conversation the children decided the birds might need a nest to keep warm.  In order to extend the children’s learning we decided to listen to the story of the Owl Babies. After listening to the story the children thought it would be fun to make their own nests.  In order to do this they collected some twigs, feathers and leaves.  They all helped to make an amazing little display which included Sarah, Percy and Bill.  The children have loved this, it has given them the opportunity to use their creativity and engage in some fantastic imaginary role play.  This has also been a fantastic opportunity for the children to observe seasonal change and opened up lots of opportunity for us to explore Autumn.  We also discovered that it was the first day of autumn on Tuesday.  We are all looking forward to learning more about Autumn.

The children have also been continuing to enjoy learning about how to keep ourselves healthy.  This week the children have been enjoying lots of healthy fruit snacks.  They even had the opportunity to make their very own smoothies.  The children absolutely loved this.  They chopped up fruit and worked collaboratively to make delicious smoothies.   This was a real treat.   Well done everyone!

Children’s voice

“The birds might get cold”

“Look, they are flying from their nest”

“I hope they come back”

“Can I build a nest?”

Welcome to St Nicholas ELC

It’s been a fantastic week welcoming all our lovely children and their families to St Nicholas ELC.  It has been lovely getting to know all our new little children.  They have all done exceptionally well and it has been a delight getting know everyone.  The main focus of the week has been helping our new little ones and our returning children to settle into the nursery ensuring they feel safe and secure.  They have all enjoyed getting know one another and have been amazing at learning nursery routines.  There has been lots of wonderful activities taking place to help our children feel welcomed and nurtured.  We have spent lots of time outdoors enjoying the lovely sunshine.  Some of the children noticed that our sunflowers have grown over the summer.  We thought this would be a good opportunity to measure the sunflowers to see how much they have grown over the summer.  We have also enjoyed summer walks looking for signs of summer and appreciating the wonder of nature.  The children have equally enjoyed playing inside the nursery and here are a few pictures of some of the activities the children have experienced.  The staff at St Nicholas ELC are looking forward to a new and exciting term and want all our children to feel welcomed and enjoy their time at nursery.

Good Luck and Farewell

We would like to wish all our little pre schoolers who are moving onto Primary 1 the very best of luck on that start of a new and exciting chapter.  It has been an absolute joy watching you all grow and blossom during your time with us.  We would also like to thank all our wonderful parents for their support over the years.  It certainly has been a challenging year, but we’ve made it.  We are never far away for any support and advice you may need.

On behalf of all the ELC team thank you and good luck to everyone.

St Nick’s Ice Cream Parlour

The children had a great time this week role playing in the requested Ice Cream Parlour.  They had the opportunity to handle money and use their imagination through this fun activity.  They also practised turn taking and developed their listening skills.  As the children were working with a 3D shape, the cone, we decided to extend this activity by putting  out other 3D shapes at the maths table for everyone to explore.  The children have taken a keen interest in learning 3D shape and have managed to remember some of the names, especially the cone. well done everyone!

Sunny Day Beach Fun

Sunny Day Beach Fun

What an amazing week it’s been in the nursery.   The children have been loving the fantastic sunny weather we have been experiencing.  There has been lots of opportunity to enjoy the outside area with lots of discussions about summer.  The children have chatted about how they would like to go to the seaside, eat ice cream and build sandcastles in the sand.  In order to extend the children’s learning and following on from lots of quality discussion the children decided they would like to make a beach hut in the role play area.  The children said they would like shells, sand, spades and buckets.  The children worked hard to put this together.  The end result was a beautiful and calming little beach hut where the children can engage in some creative imaginary role play.  The children have enjoyed getting into character and there has been lots of different scenarios, which has been fantastic to see.  Role play is more than just fun it’s an important element of learning.  Children learn from experience and from what happens around them.  Through this our children can play and have fun will develop healthy connections and choices in life.  To continue the summer theme the children also decided they would love a beach in the outdoor area.  The children have absolutely loved this.  Not only has there been lots of role play taking place there has also been lots of quality learning taking place covering all curricular areas.  The children have been counting buckets, spades and shells.  They have been comparing the size of their sandcastles using a good range of mathematical language.  Let’s hope the sunshine continues so we can continue to enjoy and learn lots more about summer.

School’s out for summer!!

When the cats away the mice can play………

The children have loved their week at nursery.  They have enjoyed spending time outside while soaking up the sunrays and exploring areas of the school when it was too hot outside.  The parachute made an appearance and the children participated with great delight and excitement.

Team building and turn taking…..

Investigating and exploring the footprint the children found in the nursery garden….’I think it’s a dinosaur’s footprint’…. Watching and listening through the eyes of a child is not only powerful but magical…

Help The Bears

This week the children participated in a problem solving STEM activity.  They had to help the bears cross the river by building a bridge for them.  This activity was very challenging for the children as they had to negotiate with each other, turn take, listen, problem solve, use their initiative and imagination.  Despite the challenges, the children had lots of fun with this activity and managed to construct a variety of different bridges.  Well done everyone.

Primary 1 Transition Calendar

Hello Everyone,

Please find below this month’s transition calendar. Next week, our preschool children will have a practise lunch in our dining hall. This will take place on Monday and Thursday of next week. If your child is in St Nicholas Nursery on a different day, they will have their practise on a day that they are in. Our preschool children that currently attend a different nursery will be contacted shortly to discuss this further.

Oh La La!!!!

The children have had great fun learning French words during carpet time and then reinforcing the learning through role play and games.  We set up a little fruit and veg shop to give the children the opportunity to use the French words that they have learnt.  The children have expressed a lot of enthusiasm for learning French and have participated in all the French activities well.  They are becoming good at remembering the words for fruit and vegetables in French and have now decided  during registration time to respond in French.

  Lots of fun shopping!!

Rainy Day Science

The children have had a fantastic week engaging in lots of new learning.  Through group discussion the children observed that we have had a lot of rainy days.  They spoke about splashing in puddles and wearing their wellies.  This opened up the children’s curiosity to find out more about where rain comes from and how it is formed.  The children listened to a story called the Rainy Day and watched a children’s science documentary which explained the cycle of water.  Through this the children learned how that the water cycle consists of four main processes which are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.  In order to enhance the children’s learning we decided to make our own water cycle diagram which illustrates this process.  Some of the children also made their own art work which illustrated and interpreted their understanding.  It has been wonderful to listen to the children use scientific terms to describe their work.  Furthermore we now plan to track how much rain water falls on a weekly basis. We have placed several buckets in the garden and will measure the water each week, we will keep you updated on this.  Please also look out for some of our fantastic science experiments which will follow in the coming weeks.

Following on from our mini beast madness blog the children have continued to make butterflies and have chatted a lot about symmetry.  In order to extend the children’s learning they have been participating in lots of smart board activities which looked at matching shapes and patterns.  The children really enjoyed this and were fantastic at matching the corresponding pattern.  The children have also been busy making various symmetrical pictures.  They have worked collaboratively and have displayed good problem solving skills.  They have also used squared paper to make their own symmetrical pattern, which is amazing.  This has been a fantastic week for fun mathematical and science learning.  Well done everyone!

This week in nursery

we have had another fun busy week learning lots of new exciting things. We have been focusing on literacy and so we got to use some of our new resources for practicing our letter formation. Some of the girls and boys were able to recognise the letters and then trace over the top of them using a pencil and some paper using our light up letter boards.

We spent some time together learning about the syllables in our names and how to tap them out,  first learning to clap them out with our hands and then learning to use a range of musical instruments to tap out the sounds. The children all really seemed to have fun and enjoy this activity.

Mini Beast Madness!

The nursery children have been very busy making lots of spring time observations this week. They were delighted to find a centipede in the nursery and used their magnifying glasses to take a closer look at it . Some children noted how it had lots of legs and moved really fast and that although it was small it was  long too. This prompted a mini beast hunt outside to see how many we could find in our garden.

Here are some of the activities that followed.

The children made this wonderful art display  which illustrates the lifecycle of a butterfly . The children worked collaboratively and discussed what materials they would use. Some children thought it was a good idea to label the illustration using some of the new vocabulary they had learned. with some adult help the were able to copy the words and display them on our wall.

Lots of mathematical language was used during our discussions.  We spoke about symmetry and how both sides of the butterfly were the same. Some of  children made some of their own symmetrical butterflies and could talk about symmetry. We played a lady bug counting game on the smart board where the children could touch count or subitise  the spots.

We can change the world with our own 2 hands.

We have been very busy this week discovering lots of new information and facts about Earth Day which was on the 22nd April. Our research and discussions led us onto talking about the planet we live on and the important part we play to protect and preserve it. The children discovered the important  role trees have and the fact they act like lungs as they breath in the dirty air that we produce by the way we live and give out clean air in the form of oxygen.  It became apparent that trees keep us alive and healthy and that we could not survive without them.  We spoke about the practical benefits of trees. Some trees provide fruit that we eat and the paper we write on all come from trees.  Bees and insects got discussed so we are going to look into the importance of their role more closely next week.

Our promise to the earth.

Here we are learning about all the different parts and functions of trees.

As a nursery we decided we would do our bit in saving our planet by ensuring we turn off the taps once we have washed our hands and only use one paper towel instead of using a handful of them.  The children were keen to  ensure they placed their empty milk cartons into the correct recycle bin.  We made a big effort on turning the lights off for most of the day in the nursery.

The children really embraced this topic and stayed engaged and focus throughout.  Well done everybody you are all amazing!!!

Another busy week in St. Nicholas Nursery….Happy Easter everyone!!!!

Well what another busy week it has been.  The children have been focused and engaged , this was evident to see throughout the week. Amazing learning  was going on as the children contributed some fantastic ideas and scenarios.  Our spring topic continues to expand and develop as is our flower shop / greengrocer.  To extend the children’s learning  on last weeks work the children have added their own spring flowers, spiders, bees and more beehives , all of these are bespoke to the individual child.  We have very talented children here at St. Nics. Here are a few pictures of the wonderful work that has been going on throughout this week.

Have a great Easter everyone, and try not to eat too many Easter Eggs!!!!

What a busy week in nursery!

It has been so nice to see all our children returning  to nursery after lockdown. They have all settled back into the routine really well and are coping brilliantly in their new ‘Bubbles’.

It has been a busy week with the children enjoying the arrival of our new sensory tent and light up toys.

We have introduced our new Spring topic this week after the children noted some of the seasonal changes taking place outside.

Here are some of the spring activities we had in nursery. The most popular was our shop where they could pretend to buy flowers, fruit and veg using real money. Lots of opportunity to count and recognise numbers.

They were all very excited to spot a Bee in the nursery and as a result the children decided it would be a great idea to make their own beehive . They researched what beehives look like and then tried to create their own using black crepe paper and yellow paint. lots of lovely pictures were produced by our talented children.

Christmas Party Fun!

Hi Everyone,

It was a busy week last week with all our Christmas parties. Great fun was had by all! The children all looked amazing in their party clothes and all behaved so well, the ladies are very proud of all the boys and girls.

At the party we played musical statues, musical bumps and the corners games. There was lots of dancing, there was even a dance off between some staff and children! ( the children won by miles!!)

After all the dancing everyone enjoyed a nice drink and some party food, it was delicious! We then heard some jingling bells and when we went back into the nursery Santa had left a gift for everyone under the Christmas tree. We all waited so patiently until all our friends had received their gift then we opened them together. Everyone was very happy and grateful for their gift.

This week your child will be bringing home all their Christmas crafts. Every child worked so hard to make these. We are sure you will love them!

The nursery team would like to thank you all for your continued support this year, especially during these difficult times.

We hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas with love and best wishes for 2021 xx

Another busy week in the nursery.

To celebrate St. Andrews day the children have been learning lots about Scotland this week. They watched a short video about St. Andrew, found Scotland on a map,  did lots of arts and crafts and took part in  some highland dancing .

While trying to find Scotland on our map the children spotted the Scottish flag and decided to try and make their own using blue and white paper.

We then had a look at lots of different types of Tartan and attempted to copy our favourites .

Here are some photos of our learning.

New Nursery Routine

Hi Everyone,

We just wanted to give you a little update on what has been happening the past few weeks at nursery. We are continuing to keep the children in two ‘bubbles’ but we have now transformed the classroom next door into another fantastic learning space. This means that including our popular garden we now have three learning areas for the children, meaning that the bubbles don’t crossover and the children can still access the same experiences as they would being in the nursery.

All these changes have been put in place to keep all our little learners as safe as possible during these unprecedented times. The staff are so proud of every one of them as they have coped with these changes amazingly well. These changes mean there is less children in each area at the one time and they all seem to embracing this opportunity, keeping busy and engaged in all the activities and fun on offer to them daily.

Staff members are also allocated to bubbles and this means that we when you arrive at nursery with your child, he/she will be brought in by the members of staff in their bubble. This is so we can keep the children in each bubble on separate sides of the cloakroom and we can only have limited numbers in here at a time. We would like to thank you all for your co-operation and support at this time and please be assured that staff will try their best to bring your child into the nursery as quick but as safely as possible. You may need to stand in que for a few minutes but this is for the safety of all the children and we appreciate your patience.

We also want to thank you all for wearing your masks in the playground and for keeping a safe distance from staff at the nursery door.

If you have any questions or concerns and would like to speak to a member of team, please give us a phone on 01506 858907.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Nursery Team

Another exciting week at nursery!

Hi Everyone,

What a fun week we have had at nursery. There has been lots of Halloween fun, including pumpkin carving, art and crafts, dressing up and delicious ‘spooky’ snacks. I think great fun has been had by all.

Lots of the children went a walk to the woods this week too. The children all demonstrated good listening as we walked there and back and knew to keep safe by holding their partners hand and staying in the line. We were very proud of all our little learners! When we got there the children had great fun throwing all the leaves up in the air. They were comparing sizes of the different leaves and matching colours. We even brought some back to the nursery for the craft area.

A lot of children have commented on how it dark it is when they finish nursery so the week ahead we will learning more about dark nights and keeping safe. If your child has a torch at home they are welcome to bring it into nursery (please put their name on it).

We will also be doing some fireworks arts and crafts as bonfire night is coming up so expect to see some glitter next week! There is a photo of the snack menu for next week so you can see what your little one is being  offered.

We hope you all have a great weekend.

Have a look at what we have been up to in Nursery

Hi Everyone,

The children have been busy learning more about Autumn time and what happens to the animals in autumn. We used our big smartboard to learn about hibernation and what animals hibernate. We have been leaving some food in the garden, hoping to see some visitors.

We are still keeping safe in our bubbles. We decided that we should name our bubbles. The children participated in a vote for the name, The choices were…

Caterpillars and Butterflies

Moon and Stars

Tigers and Cubs

Sunshine and rainbows

The most popular names were…………… Butterflies and Caterpillars!

So if your child is in the morning or afternoon session they will be in the butterfly group and if your child attends full days they will be in the caterpillar group.

The children recorded the votes using the blocks. This was a great way for them to understand the voting system, as they could see straight away what names had the most votes. See the photos below.

The children are welcome to dress up for Halloween on Thursday, More details are in the newsletter.

The newsletter will be given out this week if you haven’t already received it. We will also send it out via the school app.

We hope you all have a great weekend,

The Nursery Team

Another busy nursery week!

Hello Everyone,

The children have been learning more about autumn this week, especially the change in the weather. Please remember that we access outdoor play every day so please remember hats and wellies for your child to wear or cold and wet days.

We have been making our own autumn trees in the art and craft area and these are now displayed proudly on our nursery wall. Some children have also been out about to see the signs of autumn and collect some leaves to use in the nursery. They even managed to pick some blackberries! Discussions and stories have led on to us learning more about hibernation so we will be focusing on this over the next few weeks.

The children are doing amazingly well at remembering all the Wellbeing Icons and what they mean. The icon we have been focusing on this week has been ‘achieving’. . We have a board in the nursery cloakroom to celebrate your child’s individual achievement, from out with the nursery. If you have any photos of your child doing something special at home or from a club they attend then please e-mail it to the nursery and we will print it out and share it on our board. The nursery e-mail address is:

What We Have Been Learning in Nursery This Week…

Hello Everyone,

We are all very proud of how well the children have adapted to the new routine of being in their ‘bubbles’. This has been a really smooth transition for them. We have been having lots of discussions about keeping safe and what Coronavirus means to them, have a look at the pictures to see what they have been saying.

This week the children have noticed a change in the weather and we have been learning about Autumn time through stories and discussions. We now have a cosy woodlands role play area in the nursery for the children to play in and learn about how the animals are preparing to hibernate. It even has a camp fire to keep them warm!

The wellbeing icon we have been learning about this week is ‘Included’. The children are doing an amazing job remembering the names of all our Wellbeing Icons and using them in their everyday play and discussions. Have a look at what Included means to some of the children.

The children requested that the role play get changed into a bedroom so we have been working on that this week with their help. You may have noticed that your child has had a new hair style at nursey this week, this is because our bedroom has a dressing table with hairbrushes and mirror and the children have really enjoyed being hair stylists!

Have a look at the snack menu to what your child will be enjoying next week for snack.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Another Busy Week at Nursery

Hi Everyone,

Hope you have all had a lovely week. We have been very busy in nursery learning about our Wellbeing Icons. We have been learning about ‘Respected’. Please ask your child what this means to them.

We have also had to spilt into our ‘Bubbles’ as our numbers have increased. This is for the safety and protection of all children. We will now be bringing your children into the cloakroom in their bubbles so please be patient with us and remember to keep a 2 meter distance from others.

The children have adapted well to this and we have been having discussions about what Coronavirus is and how it has impacted their lives.

We have been lucky with the weather this week and have been enjoying lots of play outdoors we have also been exploring numbers and numerals by counting and sequencing shells.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and enjoy the long weekend if you are taking advantage of it.

What we have been learning at nursery this week…

Hi Everyone,

It has been another busy week at nursery this week. Most of our new children have now started and have settled really well with the help of all the children at St Nicholas Nursery Class. Well done!

We have been learning more about ourselves and friendships with an ‘All About Me’ topic. The children have been taking part in discussions about how we are all different and that makes us all special and unique. The children made self portraits of themselves using mirrors to check eye and hair colour. The portraits are now proudly displayed on our nursery wall.

We have also been learning about our wellbeing Icons with a focus on Safe and Healthy this week. Have a look at the photos to see what some of the children said about keeping safe and being healthy.

Please see the attached photo to see what is on offer for snack next week (week beginning 14th September).

We hope you all have a great weekend!

Hello Everyone,

You have been so busy over the last few weeks, preparing for coming to primary school and taking part in our fitness fortnight. I wanted to say a big well done to you all – I am so proud of you! Your nursery teachers, P1 teachers and I have all really enjoyed seeing everything that you’ve been doing at home and we absolutely loved meeting most of you on your transition visits.

I hope you enjoyed the letters that your buddies sent last week. Your buddies have been very busy answering all of your questions and you can find the answers to these on the ‘Buddy Question Time’ sway.

Your task this week:

We only have a couple of days left before the end of term but I would now like to invite you to send something  back for your buddy. You could choose to do a  card, a drawing or a little video. Take a photo of what you decide to do and then send it to our mailbox:

wlstnicholas-ps@westlothian.org.uk

We will then send these on to your buddy. I’m sure they will be delighted to receive something from you!

Have a lovely day in the sunshine 🌞

Mrs Evans 🌈

Our little children hard at work…

Hi everyone,

We have received fantastic photos this week from our nursery children. The children  listened to a story about a very scary crocodile. They then used their imagination to take the crocodile on their own adventure.

We’ve also been learning to recognise our own name over the last couple of weeks.  We’ve made our name using different materials and we’ve also spotted lots of photos of children writing their name! Amazing!

We’ve had a think about different shapes this week too. Some of us hunted around the house for different shapes and we even saw people having a go at an online interactive shape game. Here are some of the other things that we have been up to:

Well done boys and girls! You are going to be amazing primary 1 children! 🌟

Keep being amazing!

Week 4: Questions, questions, questions

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well this week. Please click on the link to find the transition activities for this week. If you haven’t already, please can you send us a photo of your little one with 2/3 of their favourite things. We are going to use these photos as a display and the children will be able to see their photo when they start school in August. It would be really lovely to have all of our children on the wall.

I hope you enjoy the activities this week,

Mrs Evans

A busy week for nursery boys and girls!

What a busy week for our nursery boys and girls. As well as enjoying the sunshine, you have managed to have a go at some of the transition activities. Big well done everybody!! This week lots of boys and girls made their own feelings puppets. They look amazing! Some boys and girls also did some fiddly tasks to get their fingers ready for coming to P1. Excellent job everyone 🌟

Speak to you next week!!

Mrs Evans 🌈

You’ve made us smile!

Wow nursery boys and girls! We have all loved seeing your amazing photos this week. You’ve been working so hard on some of the transition activities. You’re going to be superstars when you come into primary 1! Keep up the good work everyone! You’re doing a fantastic job! 🌟🌟🌟

Watch out for new activities on Monday! 😊

Let’s get ready for school!

Good morning everyone.  We really hope you are all well and keeping safe.  Here are a few suggestions / ideas on how to prepare your little cherub for school. As daunting as it may feel you are doing an amazing job and we know our children from St Nicholas Nursery are very resilient and confident individuals. We are very fortunate as a nursery to be adjacent to  Primary 1, which permits us to have a continuous  transition throughout the year. The children are very familiar  and comfortable with our infant area which is shared with Primary 1 on a daily basis.

Lets hope we will all be together soon.  Take care, be kind, stay positive and well.

Best wishes The Nursery Team xx

Today we are going to be Scientist……

Good morning everyone…

Hope you are all well and safe.  We thought you could try out this little activity and bring the Scientist out in you. This is a great way for the children to use their imagination, problem solving skills, investigative skills while feeding their curiosity.  It would be a good way to show our support for our amazing front liners. If you could, it would be wonderful if you could send  us a little picture of you carrying out this experiment. Good luck!!  The Nursery Team xx

Make your own rainbow
Learn how to make a rainbow with this fun science experiment.
What you’ll need:

A tall glass of water (about three quarters full)
• White paper
• A sunny day
Instructions:
1. Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good).
2. Hold the glass of water in front of the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water and bends (refracts) and forms a rainbow of colours on your sheet of paper.
3. Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles tosee  if it has a different effect.

You will only be able to see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the sunlight refracts through the water droplets in the sky in front of you. Have a look here for a bit more help if you need it!

Mindfulness for Children

We hope you are all well during this uncertain time. This is a suggestion to keep your little ones busy at home. The children enjoy participating in mindfulness session in the nursery where we focus on breathing and feeling good about ourselves.

This is a video from Cosmic Kids which focuses on breathing. They do lots of other videos too to keep your children active so have a look and keep safe.

Off to the Canal… or so we thought!

Mrs Thomson, Miss Mannion and some children set off to explore and discover the wildlife and habitats around the Canal surrounding. On their way the rain started to pour down so we made the decision to visit the cosy library instead!

The children had lots of fun listening to a story about ‘A Scaredy Bear’ the children decided on this story by voting for it out of a choice of 3 other stories.

The library even gave us some books for free to bring back to the nursery. Hopefully we will go to the canal another day.

Mindfulness In The Nursery

Today in the nursery we had our first mindfulness session . After lunch, the children relaxed in our mindfulness space which has soft lighting and relaxing music. Ensuring all children were comfortable, we began our session focussing on our breathing .Using their own imagination, the children imagined they were smelling a flower and then blowing a leaf away. Continuing the breathing theme the children demonstrated Bubble breathing, Bumblebee breathing and Rainbow breathing with gentle guidance.

A Puppet Show in P1!!

This week Primary 1 created their very own puppet shows based on The Three Little Pigs. The boys and girls made fantastic sock puppets and other props so that they could retell the story. We then presented our shows to our Primary 7 buddies and the boys and girls from the nursery. We really enjoyed showing off all our hard work!! The nursery children enjoyed visiting our classroom!

FAST Launch at St Nicholas Primary

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmsZgnK7oxk

St Nicholas Primary have been given a wonderful opportunity to host FAST sessions at our school. The programme was developed by Middlesex University and is funded by Save the Children.

The FAST programme runs after school for 8 weeks.  The weekly sessions are 2.5 hours long where a series of structured family activities take place including; communication, listening, turn taking, community building, meal sharing and relationship building.  These are key techniques to help build stronger families.

Our programme will run every Tuesday from 3.30pm until 6pm, starting on  Tuesday 17th January 2017 and our final session will be on Tuesday 14th March.

On this occasion we are offering the programme to children who are in their pre-school year at Nursery or in Primary 1. We have places for 20 families to participate.

The video link above will give you a flavour of how the programme works. Our FAST team members are also delivering a short presentation at the Nativity performances this week.

An information leaflet and invitation will be sent home soon to the pre-schoolers and Primary 1 pupils. We hope you can join us in the New Year.

It’s Almost Christmas!

The whole school is buzzing in the lead up to Christmas. The trees are up, classrooms are decorated, and there’s lots of elves keeping an eye on the classrooms!

We have a few more exciting things planned before the holidays though!

Friday 9th December – Dress Down Day

The children are invited to come to school dressed in their home clothes (or Christmas clothes if they like). Please can each child bring £1 if they are dressing down?

dress-sown-day

Wednesday 14th December – Christmas Jumper Day

This year the school is joining in with the national event, raising money for Save The Children. The children (and staff) are invited to wear a Christmas jumper on this day. If you don’t have one, don’t worry! You can  just jazz up a normal jumper with tinsel, or safety pin baubles on. There are lots of ideas online. Please can each child donate £1 on this day if they are dressing up. It is for such a great cause. If you would like to read more about it, please go to www.christmasjumperday.org.

Thank you for your support!

Nursery Pets!

A great morning was had on Wednesday when we had a visit from ‘Pets at Home’ in Livingston. We were delighted to welcome Lewis and Kelly Ann and 2 lovely guinea pigs, a rabbit and a hamster. The children were allowed to stroke the pets and ask lots of questions. we explained that we had our own vet and pet shop in our role play area and that we had been doing lots of art and craft work using pets as our theme. Look out for our displays of cats and dogs. Best of all they left us a beautiful soft and cuddly toy rabbit to play with. He needs a name though so have a think and let us know what you would like to call him. Enjoy looking at the photos.

Nursery Welly Walk

Last Wednesday 5th February saw both morning and afternoon sessions go on their sponsored Welly Walk. Luckily the weather was very kind though there were still lots of puddles for us to jump in! It was also a great opportunity to observe lots of interesting things in our local environment and the most brilliant piece of news is that so far we have raised £660. What a remarkable achievement. A huge thank you to our parents, grandparents and all those who helped either by coming along on our walk or by donating money. Our next job is to decide how to spend it! If you have any suggestions then please let us know. We will also be asking the children what new toys or games they would like to see in their nursery.
