Look at the lovely smiles from our ‘Dojo Champions’ this week ! These children gained the most points in each of the classes. We award points for a variety of things including : trying hard, being kind, having magic manners, helping others and tidying up. Well done to these children for doing all of these things so well this week.
We have had the best day ever in Primary 1 ! Why ? Well, this afternoon after we learnt all about St Nicholas we went into our classrooms and saw that our eggs had hatched ! As you can imagine, this caused great excitement as it would seem that the mummy dinosaur also visited our classrooms. We know this because she left her footprints in each of the rooms. We were so excited that Mrs Brown came along to see what was going on. She was mighty impressed to see three baby T-Rexes in her school.
James F and James H from Mrs Evan’s class actually spotted the mummy dinosaur in the bushes, wow ! We will keep you all updated with our pet dinosaur’s adventures !
Due to us being so busy with our coffee morning last Friday, we did not get the chance to celebrate our ‘Star Pupils or ‘Dojo Champions’, apologies for this. So, h ere we have last week’s ‘Star Pupils’ from Primary 1. Well done to you all for working hard in class and trying your best.
Here we have our ‘Dojo Champions’ ! These children all had the the largest number of Dojo points in each class. Well done to you all too !
It is with great pleasure that we can now announce the grand total for our ‘Macmillan Coffee Morning. We raised a whopping £500 !! Thank you so much for digging deep and helping us raise such a super amount for a great charity. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are thinking of planning another one. Watch this space !

The boys and girls ( and teachers ) would like to say a great big ‘thank you ‘ to our lovely parents, carers and guardians for supporting us at today’s Macmillan Coffee Morning. We really enjoyed sharing our work with you over a cup of tea (juice for us ) and a slice of cake . We will count all of our pennies and let you know how much we have raised as soon as possible. Thanks again everyone!
Today we learnt all about ducks. Mrs Macdonald spotted a duck in the burn next to our school on her way to school this morning. Keep your eyes peeled for it next time you pass the burn. Please remember though boys and girls to never go near water on your own.

Today we had great fun learning alongside our primary 7 buddies when we played a game in Spanish called ‘ Un, dos tres Calabaza’, (One, two, three pumpkin) in celebration of ‘International Day of Languages’. We had lots of fun playing this game as it helped us to learn how to count in Spanish. We also played number games that our p7 buddies made especially for us. We love learning Spanish in Primary 1. We can say hello, goodbye, good morning, how are you and are learning the names of colours and numbers.

Today we have been learning all about the Stegosaurus.
What have we learnt ?
Megan – A stegosaurus was the size of a bus.
Lucas – They had plates on their back.
Thomas – They ate grass.
Max C – Stegosauruses were herbivores.
Sophia & Chloe – This dinosaur had spikey horns on their tail to help them get away from other dinosaurs.
Isabella A – They moved slowly.
Ava – They moved slowly because they had short legs.
Toby – They had 17 plates on their back.

Wow ! We have some really exciting news to share with you all. Today, we receiveda letter and a package from Professor D. Inosaur asking us for some help. He asked all of the lovely boys and girls in Primary 1 to help him to look after a dinosaur egg.
Well, we could not believe it and of course we have said ‘yes’. The next few weeks in Primary 1 are going to be so much fun as we wait for the egg to hatch and learn lots of exciting things about dinosaurs. Stay tuned for dinosaur updates !

Primary 1b are really enjoying learning lots about ‘People Who Help Us’. So far, we have been learnt all about the police and paramedics. Today we got to see inside a real ambulance. It was very cool! Thank you to the two lovely paramedics, Andrea and Scott for bringing an ambulance along to our school.

Here we have Santiago and Grady ! Santiago is holding his orange belt that he was awarded in Tae Kwon Do. Well done ! Grady is proudly showing off his medal for being a fantastic boy at rugby. Well done ! I am very proud of both of you both.
Today we had a visit from three lovely ladies from ‘West Lothian Gymnastics’. What did we do ? Well we all went to the gym hall and had a gymnastics taster session . It was amazing ! First of all we played a warm up game called ‘Breakfast’ before we stretched out. We were then placed into three groups and let loose on the equipment doing forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, kangaroo jumps and more jumping using the springboard. We had such a good time that some of us wanted to have another go. Well done everyone for working hard !

What have we been up to ?
This morning we took a walk up to the ‘Range Park’. Some of us had already been before so we were already familiar with it. For some of though, it was our first time there and we were amazed when we saw all of the super things there. What did we see ?

and lots of lovely green grass and sand for us to run around on.
We all had lots of super fun running around and using the equipment. It was really great ! We arrived back to school just before lunchtime having walked back. Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Baty agreed that because we walked up and down to the park we didn’t have to do our ‘Daily Mile’ back at school. Phew !!!!
In the afternoon we had a visit from a nurse ! She told us lots of super things about our body and what we can do to keep ourselves strong and healthy. She also showed us what a heart looks like and told us how important it is to exercise. We learnt that children’s hearts should beat between 80-120 beats per minute. We also learnt how important it is to wash our hands. It was a very informative visit. Thanks so much toMrs Purves for giving up her time to talk to us.
A big thank you also to Freya and Tavia’s mummy, Wiktoria’s mummy and Thomas’s mummy for coming along to the park this morning to help us.

It was very, very, very difficult to choose a star this week in P1a because all of the boys and girls are stars. We have had such a busy week and every single one of the children has worked well and joined in every activity with great enthusiasm.
However, I have decided to give the ‘Star of the Week’ to Cole. He has impressed me with this week with his kindess towards others and how enthusiastic he has been with all our ‘Fitness Fortnight’ activities, (especially the daily mile). Well done Cole !
Our DOJO Champion this week goes to Kuba ! Well done Kuba for getting points for tidying up, changing quickly and remembering his magic manners.

This year at St Nicholas we have had Oyster catchers nesting on the roof. Unfortunately the baby chick fell out of the nest early and has been living in the playground ever since.
The children have been really good at watching it from a distance, so that the mum and dad can still look after it.When it fell out of the nest it was so fluffy but the baby is nearly as big as the mum now.
The Eco Club phoned the RSPB and asked for advice. The kind people from the RSPB said that the chick is being looked after very well and should be able to fly away in the next few days.
The mum and dad will look after it for 6 months before it is able to live alone. They will teach it everything it needs to know. The children have learned a lot about how to be kind to wildlife because of this and have found it very exciting. Well done everyone !
We have had another great day today ! We started our day off learning about lots of different fruits. We spoke about our favourite fruits before trying some of these in the form of smoothies.
We tried a mango and passion fruit smoothie, a pineapple, banana and coconut smoothie, a strawberry and banana smoothie and a pomegranate, blueberry and acai berry smoothie. We liked some of these better than others but we still tried them and some of us even asked for more. A big well done to everyone for trying these , we are super proud of you all.
Primary 1b voted, and we decided our favourite was the strawberry and banana smoothie, although the mango and passion fruit was a very close second.
In the afternoon we went for our mile walk. This is starting to become easier for us and we are enjoying being out in the fresh air.
We are looking forward to inviting our mummies, daddies, brothers, sisters, grannies and grandads to our assembly on Friday, 17th of June at 11.00am in our hall. Please come along if you can to share our learning with us.
Today has been another busy day gfor the boys and girls in P1a and P1b.
What did we do ?

After the daily mile we played games outside ‘Duck Duck Goose’ and ‘Donkey’.
After lunchtime we walked over to Strathbrock and did some Zumba. This was great fun! A huge thanks to Nina, the dance teacher for showing us some cool moves and helping us with our fitness.
Look at our amazing castles ! Haven’t we done well ? Well done everyone for working so hard on these. I am super proud and I think that our friendly dragon will be too.

We came in from lunch today to find yet another surprise left for us in our classrooms. Two lovely cuddly kangaroos and their babies were waiting for us! Who left these for us you may ask ?

We have some exciting news ! Our friendly dragon has left us another two letters. He left us letter number 2 yesterday. In his second letter he told us that he was so happy to see our classroom beginnning to look like Fairyland. As a special gift he left us all a ‘Castle Book’ for us to write in. So, we have all drawn a picture of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ on the front covers.
Today though, has just been fantastic! We got a big shock after play time to see that someone had ran through our classroom and had spilt porridge oats all over the carpet. After a lot of discussion we all agreed that we think this must have been GOLDILOCKS !!! She has been very naughty leaving our classroom in such a mess.
However, our shock turned to delight to see that the dragon had left us letter number 3 and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ to read. We read this story. It was great! We have asked Mr Macdonald to be on the look out for Goldilocks. She needs to come back to our class to tidy up !

The boys and girls from P1a and P1b got a special surprise today ! It would appear that a friendly dragon visited our classrooms whilst we were outside practising our capital letters.
We have been left a letter and a special D-mail box from this dragon. He is sad because his land, ‘Fairyland’ has been destroyed so he wants us to turn our classrooms into a new Fairylands.
Well, as you can imagine this has caused great excitement and we are definitely up for this challenge. We will keep you all posted over the next few weeks as to what we are going to do to rebuild Fairyland.

We also had a competition to see who the best dancers were. We all had some moves but we all agreed in the end that Kuba was the winner from P1 and Finn was the P2 winner. Well done boys !
Here we are learning all about symmetry. We are learning that pictures and shapes that are symmetrical are the same on the both sides , even if you turn them or flip them.

Today was a super day with lots of great things happening. What did we do ?
Lots of classes completed their book themed wall/classroom door.
We brought in books to swap with a friend in our class. We all went home with a new book.
A different teacher read a story to us.
P5 played ‘Book Cluedo’. We now have an idea who took Mrs Brown’s books ! All will be revealed tomorrow.
We have been learning how to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. We are doing well showing different o’clock times using both types of clocks. We will move onto ‘half past’ very soon.
Our ‘Book Week’ got off to a super start today with the boys and girls engaging in lots of great actvitiies including :
Whole school story – P1 started off our whole school story. After a super discussion and a vote we agreed that the main characters in our story should be animals. We used our imaginations to start off the story before we passed it over to the boys and girls in P2 who then wrote their part. The story will visit all of the classes throughout the week with each stage adding their part. We cannot wait to hear what happens next.
Paired reading – Primary 7 visited the boys and girls in P1 and read stories to them. The P1’s loved being read to from their special visitors.
P7 went investigating around the school reading clues and looking for pictures of very famous book characters when they played ‘Cluedo’. They had super fun looking for the culprit who stole Mrs Brown’s books. I wonder who it was ? All will be revealed soon.P4, P5 and P6 will play this game too throughout the week.

Primary 1 started their new topic this week, ‘Energy’. We will be spending the next few weeks finding out how different things work. We will also be looking at things that use electricity and learn about how we keep safe around electrical items.
This week we focussed on toys. We learnt that some toys need to be pushed, others need to be pulled whilst others need batteries and electricity to make them move. We played games and looked at a super game on the smartboard. It has been fun !

Today we were treated to a highland dancing lesson from Kyle’s mummy. We had great fun and learnt how to do high kicks, the pas de bas and how to dance a reel. We would like to say a big thank you to Kyle’s mummy for giving up her time to come into our class.

Today, the boys and girls in Primary 1 learnt all about the Chinese New Year. Why ? Well, today is the Chinese New Year.
What did we learn ?
We found out that the Chinese New Year is a very special time but it wasn’t always like that.We learnt about the legend of the Chinese New Year. We learnt that long ago a monster called Nian appeared in a village in China and scared all of the villagers. A wise old man came up with a plan to scare away the monster. He said that the villagers should wear clothes with red, gold and orange. He also said that the monster was scared of loud noises and fire, so the villagers banged their drums loudly and lit fire crackers. When the villagers did this, the monster ran away.
Chinese New Year is a time when families get together to celebrate. In the days coming up to New Year every family buys presents, decorations, food, new clothes and people have their hair cut. Houses are cleaned from top to bottom. The aim is to sweep out any bad luck from the old year and clear the way for good luck. However, it is bad luck to clean on New Years Day itself.
Families put lights up outside their homes, rather like Christmas lights. Doors and windows are often newly painted in red. On New Years Eve both narrow strips of red paper, called Chunlian or Spring Couplets, and bunches of firecracker decorations are hung on doors to bring good luck.
Chinese New Year celebrations last for 15 days. In the first three days of Chinese New Year celebrations, people living outside cities can light firecrackers which are similar to rows of fireworks, but which make a series of loud bangs. The idea is that the bangs scare away bad luck. People hang bunches of decorative firecrackers both inside and outside their homes for the same reason.
The colour red is used to decorate for two reasons. The first is because red is a lucky colour and the second because it is supposed to frighten off the monster Nian who is thought to come on New Years Eve. Families also decorate their homes with lanterns and put stickers on things in their homes.
We had lots of fun in the afternoon to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
What did we do ?
We learnt how to count to 10 in Chinese.
We made a part of a dragon. (Once these are dry we will join them together to make a huge dragon).
We tasted lots of Chinese foods and drinks including : Sweet and sour vegetable wantons, prawn crackers, spring rolls, tangerines and lychee juice.
We made Chinese lanterns.
We looked at Chinese images and coloured them in.
We looked at Chinese numbers and copied these.
It was a fantastic afternoon, full of super learning and fun. Well done everyone !

This week’s ‘Dojo Champion’ is Kacper ! Kacper had the most points, but it was very cloase between him and lots of other children. There was only one point of a difference ! Keep it up everyone. You are all stars.

Here we are in P1a working hard during topic time. We have had a busy week, designing ships like the shipbuilders used to do in Glasgow, painting beautiful thistles, and learning the names of body parts in Scots language. It has been a braw, (good) few days.
We have been learning all about money in Primary 1a. We have learnt that :
Coins have a name – Santiago.
You can add coins together – Kyle.
The gold pennies are a £1 – Michael.
Coins that are old look a bit dirty – Thomas.
We need coins to pay for things – Niamh.

We have enjoyed learning about tartan in our class. We have learnt that tartan is a Scottish checked pattern. Some of the lines go across the way and some go down the way. We learnt that there are lots and lots and lots of different kinds of tartans and each one usually has a Scottish family’s name. Michael and Niamh very kindly brought in their tartan kilts to show us. They were both very different ! We also learnt that long ago you could tell which family a person belonged to just by looking at the tartan that they wore.

We have been very busy this week learning lots of new things about our topic. Hamish McHaggis took us on a tour of Edinburgh. We were amazed to find out that the castle was built on an old volcano and that long, long ago it was surrounded by water. We also located Edinburgh on a map and found out that it is close to Broxburn!
We also took a ‘trip’ to Inverness. We learnt that it is the largest city in the Highlands. We explored Loch Ness and watched a clip of the loch . Some of us thought that we spotted something?! What could it be? Ah, Nessie ? We learnt lots about her and had a vote. Nearly everyone believes in her ! Wonder where she is hiding?
We also used our super knowledge of our sounds to help us to write an imaginative story about her . We did a good job. Well done everyone !
A very big well done to Fynn for being our ‘Star Pupil of the Week’ and to Santiago for being our ‘Dojo Champion’. Super work, manners and effort from both boys this week. You have both made me very proud.

We have started our new topic , ‘Scotland and Edinburgh’.
Today , we made our very own Scotland flag and learnt that it is called the Saint Andrew’s Cross.
As the song goes , ‘We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year’.

P1 would like to thank all of the lovely visitors who managed to pop along to our craft afternoon. We had such a great time making reindeer food, Rudolph hot chocolate, Christmas stockings, snowmen and Christmas trees. We hope that you had lots of fun !

Well done to Zofia for being our ‘Dojo Champion’. Zofia has also worked hard all wee, had super lunch time manners and been fantastic in class helping to tidy up, 
Well, it became a lot clearer today as to why two elves suddenly appeared in our classes the other day. Santa needs our help ! He left us a letter explaining what it is he wants us to do. It turns out that the two little elves are still learning how to be good and so Santa has sent them to our classes so that we can teach them all about good manners, team work, good listening, how to share and how to be helpful.
We are going to try extra harder over the next few weeks to display these super behaviours in the hope that the two little elves will learn too. We have a lot of work to do though when it comes to these elves!
Our classes were a right old mess on Thursday as the elves thought it would be funny to have a snowball fight. Oopsy ! On Friday, they had decided to make snow angels. More mess ! It looks as though we have our hands full. Watch this space for more elf updates.
P1 have had an exciting start to the Christmas season. The classrooms have had a Christmas makeover ! We have also found two little elves hiding in our classrooms. We have no idea where they came from or why they are here. Watch this space for Christmassy updates!
We hope to see lots of you on Thursday night at our Christmas Fair buying our Christmas Slates and Christmas placemats. We have had great fun making these !
