Literacy
Yesterday I gave you a task on collective nouns. You had to find two answers for each collective noun.
Please see a selection of answers below. You might have had alternative nouns.
Don’t forget to send some of your collective noun pictures – I would love to see them!
Spelling Words
France – Paris, Portugal – Lisbon, Spain – Madrid, Germany – Berlin, Sweden – Stockholm
Poland – Warsaw, Austria – Vienna, Netherlands – Amsterdam, Belgium – Brussels, Norway – Oslo
Spelling Task
On Tuesday I asked you to select four pairs of words and to make 3D version outside.
Today I would like to take the remaining words and create a short travel blog. Research some of the countries and cities and provide some information for a would-be traveller. You might even add a picture or two.
I’m looking forward to reading them!
Collective Nouns
Please complete the following with nouns you have not used before.
Just for fun!
Try creating some collective nouns of your own. Select some plural nouns and see what you can suggest. See some examples of plural nouns below:
Examples
You can use these or choose some of your own. Have some fun – then email them to me!
Numeracy
Yesterday we looked at a word problem Chilli Challenge. Please find the answers below:
Times tables can be tricky. It isn’t always easy to ask an adult if you are unsure as so many of them are working form home themselves also.
I have a task which will help you to learn your tables and to become more independent should you need help. Select a table (or more than one) that you find tricky. For those of you who are confident in tables to 10x, select the 11x or 12x table.
Look at the picture below and create your own table-checker! Genius!
Thursday Word Problems
There are two challenges for you to try today…you might even like to try both!
Good Luck!
Answers will be posted at 3pm today.

Please select one or two tasks from your grid.
Finally…
Just for fun…. Celebrate NHS and Keyworker Thursday… dance like no one is watching…and then clap tonight – 8pm!

I hope that you managed to make some super 3D spelling pairs. Today, using the other four pairs, create a spelling flower like the one below. In the centre, write: Country/City
Collective Nouns
I hope that you enjoyed yesterday’s activities. The answers can be found below.
What might you expect to find in each of these groups?
Task 1
As I said earlier, sometimes we use the same collective noun for different things – and you can see some examples above.
Your tasks is to find two different things for each of the following collective nouns. Don’t use any of the examples we have already used.
Task 2
Collective nouns can make us imagine some very silly pictures.
Did you know that a group of lizards is called a lounge of lizards? Or that if you look up into the trees that you might see a murder of crows?
Have a look at the images below to see how an artist imagined the examples above!
A lounge of Lizards A murder of crows
Over to you….please select a collective noun of your choice and create a picture to illustrate. Please ask an adult to email it to me…let’s see if we can create a gallery of collective nouns!

On Sunday the Primary 4 children were supposed to celebrating their First Holy Communion. Sadly this will not take place. I thought that it might be an idea for you to write a short prayer to let them know that you are thinking of them at this time.
If you write and decorate your prayer and send it to me, I’ll ask the P.4 teachers to post all of the prayers on their blogs.
I think that you’ve all worked very hard today…so time for a rest and some relaxation!
See you tomorrow!
Welcome back Fun-loving Fives!
I hope that you had a lovely, long weekend and are ready to start back to work!

Here is another verse for Macavity, this time written by Sofia. I’m sure that you will enjoy it!
Macavity Macavity naughty old Macavity.
He’s broke the lockdown rules , he doesn’t know the gravity.
He thinks he’s far too cool to play by the rules.
Not social distancing , he’s acting like a fool.
Macavity broke into the chapel, to try and steal the gold
But he never thought Father Campbell would be quite so bold
The priest grabbed him by the neck and called 999
What a noise he made, you could really hear him whine!
Father Campbell bravely held him by the hair
And when the police arrived
Macavity WAS there!
Terrific work, Sofia. Well done!

Task 2
What might you expect to find in each of these groups?
Please note: there might be more that one answer to each of the above; however, you simply need to give me one.

Yesterday I asked you to make a May Altar. I hope that you managed to do that – I am looking forward to seeing some pictures.
Today your task is to say a decade of the Rosary in front of your May Altar. In school I ask you to think of a person or a group of people you would like to remember in your prayers. Think of someone special or a group of people….perhaps you might like to pray for yourself.
Settle quietly:
Make the Sign of the Cross, then say: Our Father , Hail Mary (ten of these), Glory be to the Father, St. Barbara, pray for… (three times) and make the Sign of the Cross again.
To help you I have posted the Hail Mary in English and in Spanish.

Literacy
Spelling
Your spelling words are called ‘proper nouns.’ Proper nouns always require capital letters – in this case many of them are place names.
Today’s challenge is to work out the anagrams; I have jumbled up the letters in your spelling words but I have NOT added any capital letters, just to make it trickier for you!
When you work the answers out, please add capital letters.
sumfired shourt ebeander nabo reslome loluolpa
sinevsner wagglos bredginuh arrestran bathrora ray
Now, check your spelling against yesterday’s list.
Proper Noun Challenge
For each of the following common nouns, create a Proper Noun (the first one is done for you):
Yesterday you were working on a tourist guide related to one of the towns/cities from your spelling list. Please complete this if you have not already done so.
Maths
Yesterday you were exploring numbers to one million, 1 000 000. Today we are going to work a little more on place value.

Grid Activities
For your last challenge today, please select one or two activities from the new grid (or from the old one if there is something you prefer).
After that you are finished for the day. I hope that you have a relaxing evening and I’ll see you tomorrow!
Good morning everyone.
I hope that you all remain safe and well. Please see a reminder for planning and tasks this week as a result of staff working in the HUB.
Chryston HUB; Public Holidays and INSET Day
Parents, this week is a little different for everyone as many of our staff will be working in Chryston HUB. On the days they are working in the HUB, staff will not be uploading work for children. However, new home-learning grids have been uploaded and children can select tasks from these.
The timetable below indicates the days when work will not be uploaded for specific classes:
Monday 4th May: Primary 1 (Miss McEleney) and Primary 3
Tuesday 5th May: Primary 1 (Mrs Connolly/Mrs MacLeod) and Primary 2
Wednesday 6th May: Primary 1 (Miss McEleney) and Primary 2
Thursday 7th May: Primary 3
Friday 8th May is a public holiday consequently tasks will not be uploaded for any of the classes.
Monday 11th May is an INSET day for staff. Again tasks will not be uploaded for any of the classes.
Home-Learning Grids
New grids have been uploaded onto the Home-Learning Section on the website.
Good Morning, Fearless Fives!
I hope that you have all had a wonderful weekend, that you’ve had breakfast and are ready to begin a brand new week!
Let’s begin with the morning prayer:
God our Father, as we begin our day’s work we ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us so that we may fully benefit from our day together. Amen.
Health and Wellbeing
I saw that you were practising some Spanish on Friday. How about a Hula to get us going?
Learning Grids
The eagle-eyed among you might have spotted that new learning grids have been uploaded today. There are quite a few activities I think that you are going to enjoy.
Macavity the Mystery Cat Challenge!
On the last learning grid I set a task based on one of my favourite poems: Macavity the Mystery Cat. I challenged you to write an additional verse. Well, below you will find a super verse written by Rachael:
Fantastic work, Rachael! I really enjoyed reading your work and I think that TS Eliot, the poet would have loved it too!
I’m still waiting for more verses and visualizations. Please email them to me:

Literacy
Spelling Words
This week we are going to focus on place names, specifically those of cities and towns in Scotland.
Edinburgh Inverness Melrose Arbroath Dumfries Ullapool
Thurso Oban Ayr Stranraer Aberdeen Glasgow
Use the map below to see where each of the towns and cities lies within Scotland.
Literacy Task
Creating a Tourist Guide
Note: this task might take a day or two to complete.
Many people use a Tourist Guide when they visit a new country, city or town. Your task is to select one of the cities or towns from your spelling list and to carry out some research. You are going to write a couple of paragraphs about the city/town giving key information for a tourist visiting Scotland.
You might want to consider the following:
Remember: this is a guide for tourists. You could include some illustrations or maps however it has to be brief and include all of the salient (key) information about your selected town or city (tourists are eager to see the sights – they will not have time to read for a long period of time). I’m looking forward to reading some of your work as I haven’t been to some of those places…perhaps you might persuade me to visit some in the future!
Numeracy
Today we are going to explore numbers to one million – 1 000 000!
Don’t worry if you have not worked on these before – as I said, we’re going ‘to explore!’
Please click on the link below and then switch to ‘slideshow’ as the answers follow the questions! Let’s go Number Detectives!
R.E.
Yesterday was Good Shepherd Sunday. We remember that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and that we are just like his sheep. A good shepherd looks after all of his sheep and he always makes sure that he knows exactly where each one is. A good shepherd worries about each and every one of his sheep and he keeps them safe and well.
Yesterday Fr. Campbell told a true story during Mass about a shepherdess who lives on one of the Scottish Islands far north of the Scottish mainland.
She had a flock of sheep and one of these sheep had a little lamb. Nothing unusual about that; however the mother sheep wouldn’t look after the lamb and wouldn’t feed it or care for it. That is unusual.
The shepherdess, a good shepherdess looked after the lamb herself. She fed it and cared for it; she even gave it a name – Norman!
In due course she sold some lambs at auction, including Norman. A while later, she regretted her decision. She traced him all the way to a farm in Aberdeen – hundreds of miles from where she lived.
She travelled all the way to Aberdeen to the farm. There were seven hundred lambs in the field but she recognized Norman. Amazingly, Norman recognized her when she called his name and came running over to her! They both went back to the islands.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He always recognizes each one of us and he always takes care of us. Even when we do something wrong, he welcomes us back with open arms when we say that we’re sorry.
Perhaps you could make a 3D picture of the Good Shepherd. Look at the idea below.
Learning Grids
To finish today, please select an activity or two from the home-learning grids. You’ll find them in the home-learning grid section on the right-hand side of the website!
I hope that you all enjoy the rest of your day and I’ll see you tomorrow!
Remember, you can email me:
ht@st-barbaras.n-lanark.sch.uk
Good Morning Everyone!
I have really enjoyed looking at all of the pictures on Twitter of you working so hard this week. I have to say that some of the activities looked like great fun – you have certainly been very imaginative and creative!
You should all have your GLOW information and passwords now which means that you can upload your work and pictures onto the site.
Please enter the Road Safety Mascot competition – what a terrific idea for the school. You can find more information about it from Miss McMullen on Twitter.
I know that it’s Friday, the sun is shining and that we are all looking forward to the weekend!
So just before the weekend begins, let’s take a few moments to remember all of our fabulous NHS staff, all of the keyworkers, all of our wonderful staff, all of your parents and the adults who have been supporting you at home this week. We’ll also think about Fr. Campbell who has been saying Mass every day and remembering all of us in his prayers.
We also need to think about those who are ill in hospital and at home at present as well as those who have died in recent weeks.
We now need to remember all of you – our fantastic children – who have been working so hard in rather strange circumstances! Well done!
We ask God to bless each and every one of us today and to look after us all this weekend. Together, let’s say a Hail Mary…
Now! It’s Friday…the sun is shining…and you should know that when I was talking to Fr. Campbell earlier on this morning he suggested a, ‘Sneaky little extra playtime’ for all of you! What a great idea!
So boys and girls, treat yourselves to a slightly longer break this morning and don’t forget about Golden Time this afternoon. I think that you should all have an extra ten minutes – and all of the staff as well!
Stay safe this weekend – remember the sun cream and the hats!
Mrs McKinney
