P7B May Update

This month has been very busy for primary 7 as we have taken part in a wide range of activities.

During numeracy we have been exploring chance and uncertainty as well as some algebra and revising our time skills. The children have worked hard to consolidate their basic number knowledge and strategies in preparation for high school in August. Consistent practice of these skills, especially telling the time at home, will continue to assist them in progressing their learning and help them to feel more confident using these life skills everyday.

During literacy we have created some amazing imaginative stories during our writing lessons. The pupils have such wonderful ideas and imaginations which is clear through their writing. We have been taking time to use our ICT skills to create power points and word documents in relation to our Venice topic and linking to our novel ‘The Thief Lord’. I was very impressed with the efforts all pupils gave during their Venice projects and solo talks.

During health and wellbeing, we have enjoyed continued sessions from the Scottish rugby and focused on our team building skills during PE. We have also completed activities and discussions surrounding personal hygiene, friendships, influences and a growth mindset which all pupils have participated in well.

We were very lucky to spend four days at Strathclyde Park at the end of May, taking part in a variety of activities and sports which was a huge success. The pupils attended every day and absolutely loved each and every new sport and skill they learned. I am so proud of their excellent display of behaviour and teamwork across our trip.

During RE lessons this month we have focused on Mary our Mother and learned all about her life, her names and her values. The children have also learned the Angelus prayer and we have made an effort to practice this as often as we can at 12pm each day. Pupils have also taken care dressing our May altar with flowers this month too!

As we enter our final month of primary school, the pupils are making the most of their time left at Holy Family. Their hard work is paying off and I am looking forward to making these next few weeks special for them with lots of exciting activities. Well done Primary 7B!

Primary 7B April Update

After a lovely Easter Break, we welcomed our Primary 7 pupils back for their last summer term at Holy Family Primary!

During the first two weeks of term we have been very busy! We had a very successful trip to Cardinal Newman for the commonwealth games where Holy Family secured the first place trophy! We are so proud of our teamwork and sports skills needed to achieve this.

Last week we began rugby sessions with our friends in P7A, which we are looking forward to continue to take part in over the new few weeks. With this in mind, our PE days are now a Tuesday and Friday this term so please remind pupils to bring their PE kits to school on these days.

On Thursday last week, alongside Primary 7A, we received and celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation after months of careful preparation. It was such a special night for our pupils and families, we are very proud of them and all that they have achieved!

We are also very excited about our upcoming school show which will take place on the 6th and 7th of June in St. Gerard’s Primary school hall. Pupils across the school are busy practising dances, lines and songs together with lots of excitement! We can’t wait to see them all show off their talents at the end of term!

Within our own classroom, we have started a new novel called ‘The Thief Lord’ which is set in the city of Venice which is also our new topic this term! As well as this, we are taking part in an enterprise challenge with Primary 7a to help raise money for our Primary 7 treats at the end of term. All pupils are thoroughly enjoying this challenge and working with all of their peers.

We have begun working on algebra within numeracy and I am very impressed with every pupil’s efforts so far! Keep it up Primary 7B!

I hope this last term is a special one for you all and you enjoy your final few months at Holy Family Primary school.

Primary 7B February Update

Numeracy

This month we have been very busy working hard to develop our money handling skills, shape and area skills and are beginning to revise our knowledge of fractions. We are learning that having a strong knowledge of our times tables, can help us in every area of numeracy and applying mathematical strategies is easier when we know our tables confidently.

We have completed writing our newspaper report on the outbreak of world war two and have continued to explore the active literacy strategies to deepen our reading skills using our class novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’.

We have been busy exploring Anderson shelters this month in line with our WWII topic and have begun to create our own which will be a homework project for pupils over the next two weeks. We will have a presentation of our creations on Friday the 24th March in class.

RE

This month we have celebrated the beginning of lent and have all made our Lenten promises together in class. A few of our pupils have been attending morning Masses during the school week which has been lovely to see and well done! We are continuing to work on our Confirmation preparation workbooks both in school and at home. We are getting closer to the time of our special preparation and the pupils are looking very much forward to receiving their sacrament together.

Health and Wellbeing

This month we celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week and took part in a week of mindful activities to encourage pupils to think about their emotions and ways to take care of their minds as well as their bodies. In PE we have been focusing on yoga which has been a lovely way to explore some stretching, meditation and breathing techniques too.

Primary 7B January Update!

This month we have been working very hard in all of our curricular areas!

Maths

This month we have been working on our division skills and exploring the links division has with multiplication. All pupils are definitely improving their times table knowledge  but I would encourage pupils to  continue to be practise them at home too if possible.  Some pupils have been working with Mrs Anderson in P7a exploring negative numbers which they are excelling at so well done!

We have just moved on to our money handling topic and already the pupils are loving it! We have opened up a little pretend shop in the classroom to use during active maths which is working really well and causing lots of excitement which is lovely to see. Pupils have also started a new class economy rewards system involving earning money, paying rent for jotters, paying fines for specific things and buying rewards of their choice!  They are very excited about this and are learning some important life skills along the way!

Literacy

This month, we are continuing to practice our common spelling words and apply our spelling strategies to help us. We are exploring different areas of active literacy skills and using these to help us understand our new novel ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ on a deeper level. This month we have also been analysing the features of newspaper reports, specifically newspaper reports of World War 2 which is our  class topic  this term. Pupils will be writing their own newspaper report this week to demonstrate their new skills.

Topic

Our topic this term is World War Two, so we have been exploring lots of materials to help us further our knowledge. Pupils have enjoyed learning about the role of Scotland within the war as well as important events along the WW2 timeline. We have been creating some Blitz paintings and listening to some important radio announcements from the outbreak of WW2 too!

RE

This month we have been focusing on Jesus and the way he lived his life and the choices he made. We have reflected as a class on some of the choices we have made in our lives and the choices we make on a daily basis, thinking of ways we can improve these to live more like Jesus by striving to always make good choices.

It is nearing a very special time for Primary 7 this term as we prepare for their Confirmation in April. This week we began our Confirmation workbooks and children will be asked to complete home session 1 for next week. We have had some lovely discussions in class already about choosing a Saint’s name as part of their sacrament. As a class, we will be completing some research into different saints over the next few weeks to help them decide on their confirmation names and pupils will be encouraged to discuss and explore their decisions at home too. We are looking forward to this special time together.

PE

This month we began netball lessons during PE which all pupils thoroughly enjoy and are keen to take part in which is excellent. We recently came second place at a school tournament with our P5-7 netball team so I’m sure we will have some new additions to the team shortly!

Science

This term we continuing to promote recycling and prevent plastic pollution in line with Laudato Si. To encourage staff and pupils within the school, we are creating a mural display for our Laudato Si wall in the school hall. To create this we are using recycled plastic bottle tops!

Therefore, I would like to encourage you to try and save as many as you can at home for pupils to bring in and use for our mural display! They can be any size and colour, we appreciate all of your support. When completed, there will be pictures shared on the school Twitter account so keep your eyes peeled!

A very positive start to the year for Primary 7B! Well done everyone.

November Update – Primary 7B

During the month of November, we have been very busy in Primary 7B!

We started off the month by taking part in our first Friday Mass with pupils reading, sharing bidding prayers and taking part in the offertory.

In maths we have been focusing on multiplication and our times tables.  All pupils love to explore new ways to practise their times tables, so we have been playing some interesting active maths games including times table Jenga! Most pupils are becoming more confident using different multiplication strategies in their work and can confidently explain how they have come to an answer during our number talks sessions too.

In literacy, we have been continuing to read our Divided City novel and discuss new themes we discover whilst reading. Pupils enjoy using our cosy corner of the classroom to read privately on our comfy classroom beanbags!
We have also been learning how to write a discursive argument. Pupils used these new skills to write a discursive piece of work discussing whether or not there should be a smoking ban in Scotland. This directly links to their health and wellbeing topic of the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse and misuse.

During this month, we have also been taking part in a lot of drama games which the pupils thoroughly enjoy. We have used different skills such as improvisation and speech and movement to develop our theatrical skills within the classroom.

We have been very lucky to still receive PE sessions from Cardinal Newman sports leaders each week and we will be sad to see them return to High School in December. The pupils have loved having their input and taking part in each week’s lesson.

However, in preparation for our Christmas parties, we have started practising our Scottish dancing skills! We have joined up with primary 5 and 6 to learn various group dances including the military two step and the dashing white sergeant. We are very excited to take part in these dances during our Christmas parties!

We have also been continuing to learn about the Scottish Parliament and democracy in Scotland which is part of our mini topic this term. The pupils are now very excited as we are going to visit the Scottish Parliament next week!

November has been full of learning, fun and hard work for Primary 7B and we are very much looking forward to the Christmas fun in December!

Please make sure you follow the school’s twitter page to see photos of what we get up to during the week!

Primary 7b October Update

Primary 7b have been working very hard during the month of October!

In literacy we have been using our spelling strategies and active spelling activities to help us practise our spelling words each week. We have been learning more about areas of grammar and how to improve our persuasive writing skills too.

Linking to our class topic of Sectarianism and Discrimination we have been reading the novel ‘Divided City’ and working together with Primary 7a to complete a variety of workshops and tasks, deepening our understanding of these themes. This term we will begin a mini topic of Scottish Democracy which the children are very much looking forward to.

In maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of place value through lots of active maths and games. The children have loved being able to get practical with tools in maths and this really seems to help them progress further too. We have also been learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shape with Mrs Gilfedder on Thursdays. We are now moving onto multiplication and every child has been encouraged to practise their times tables as often as they can to help them achieve success.

We have been exploring a topic of healthy eating within health and well-being too. The pupils have loved researching important foods, vitamins and minerals our bodies need to function and have used a variety of materials, including painting watercolour fruits, to create a display wall which looks beautiful.

In PE, we have had some visits from Cardinal Newman High School and their young leaders who have been teaching both Primary 7 classes lots of skills. These sessions will continue in November as well.

In RE, we have been learning about Saint Bernadette and the mysteries of the Holy Rosary throughout October. Today we also had our First Friday Mass during the week of the Holy Souls and All Saints Day.

Overall, the children of Primary 7b have been working very hard to improve their skills in all areas, I am very proud of them. We have had lots of fun too so please make sure to check out the school’s twitter page to keep up to date with pictures of their learning experiences.
