There was a real buzz of excitement in the classroom this week as we got our hands on the school Chromebooks for the very first time. We were stepping away from touchscreens (like iPads and tablets) to use a physical keyboard and trackpad which was a brand-new challenge.

Getting logged onto a laptop requires a lot of patience, a bit of teamwork, and discovering just how tricky it is to find the spacebar.

Over the next few weeks

• The Great Login Challenge: We will be learning that passwords are secret, understanding how to type them carefully, and celebrate the magic moment the home screen finally loads.

• Taming the Trackpad: We will be shifting from tapping a screen to dragging a cursor with one finger while clicking with another will be a massive leap for our fine motor skills.

• Finding the Keys: We will practise hunting down the letters in our names, learning that the keyboard isn’t in alphabetical order (a very confusing discovery for a P2!).

• Digital Teamwork: We will also be leaning over to help our “learning partners” to find the enter key and logging off.

Why Start Now?

By introducing Chromebooks now, we are learning how to use technology; we are building our independence and problem-solving skills. These early sessions will lay the groundwork so that by the time we reach the upper primary years, we can confidently use these tools for research, writing, and creative projects.
