Hello everyone!
We’ve had a fantastic week in Primary 2, blending our numeracy skills with some wonderful creativity. We wanted to share a quick update on our latest classroom project with you all.
Exploring Symmetry Through Art
This week, our focus has been on learning all about symmetry. To bring this maths concept to life, we were tasked with creating our very own symmetrical butterfly artwork. We learned that for a butterfly to fly properly, its wings need to be a perfect mirror image of one another!
“Symmetry means it is exactly the same on both sides, just like looking in a mirror!”
How Did We Do It?
Drawing a perfectly symmetrical shape freehand can be quite tricky, so we used a template to help us out:
-
The Grid Method: We placed a grid of square boxes over the butterfly picture.
-
Matching the Squares: We used these square boxes as a guide to carefully draw the exact same shapes and patterns on each side.
-
Counting: By counting how many boxes a pattern took up on one wing, we could make sure we drew it in the exact right spot on the opposite wing.
Brilliant Results!
We worked so hard on this and showed brilliant concentration. Using the square boxes really helped us grasp the concept of spatial awareness.
A quick activity for home: Next time you are out for a walk outside or in the garden, why not ask if we can spot anything else in nature that is symmetrical? Leaves, flowers, and even our own faces are great examples!
Have a lovely weekend.
