Newton Farm Primary School and Nursery Class

This Week in Room 24

We have had a busy week in Room 24!

During our soft start Josh and Joseph used the dominoes to build their own Stadium! If I’m not mistaken they modelled it after Hampden Park.

We have also been expanding our knowledge of rounding numbers, working now with number up to 1 billion! So consolidate our learning and practise our rounding, we took part in a game of Rounding Shuffleboard!

The pupils split into teams and used dice or playing cards to help them randomly generate numbers to round. They then slid pucks (bottle tops) along the table. Where the puck landed determined what number they would round their randomly generated number to! The pupils loved this active approach to their numeracy.

We have been continuing to read “The Girl of Ink and Stars”. In a recent chapter the main character discovered the map she is using has a secret hidden within it; a whole other map drawn in disappearing ink!

We investigated different disappearing ink methods and recipes to determine which one was the most effective.

The pupils worked in groups and followed instructions independently to try out different disappearing ink recipes and methods. These included heating lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda mixed with grape juice and a good old piece of paper and pencil!

After the investigation the pupils agreed that while the potion style recipes were fun to make, the most effective method was simply leaning hard with a pencil to on two pieces of paper and writing your message. The piece of paper underneath you be left with the indentation of the message that could be revealed by lightly shading over it with a pencil! This method was quick, easy and used materials most people have access to! The boys and girls loved this activity!
